A cool car for sure. Problem here in the States is that owners ran the crap out of them. That no one takes care of their autos is no surprise. The ML55 has become a rare find as of late. They were a high overhead auto…which practically no one wanted to keep up. Sad, because the ML55 is a unique item. Thanks for your enjoyable video.

I had a standard ML as a loaner, of similar vintage, once. If you think the ML AMG is "not quick", it's under-horsed brother was hopeless. Absolutley no get up and go at all. Drove like a tank and accelerated like one, too. Thanks for sharing, Matt.

Build quality of the ML wasn't the best in the world (Lexus had that covered), but it wasn't as bad as the P38 Range Rover (or even the early L322).

Thats a 24 year old Mec 55 V8.In just one year that will be classed as an antique. I am sure you bought it out of love but for the ordinary folk, it will need a bank to follow it always. Its bound to need fixing regularly .I do love a 2015 3.5 V6 in these but a for 24 year old Mec 55 V8,i will wish you luck.

the ML55 AMG is so damn rare even if you check websites here in Ireland the only popular ones are the 2006-2010 series that's the face change model.

Im the same as you i have a love for the w163. i have also had a few over the years brought both my children home from hospital in them. i have had an ML55 for about 6 years now and still love it. Mine is not completely standard running about 385 BHP but for an easy mod that really wakes these old girls up is a Sprint Chip it shortens the throttle response and makes a big difference to the drive.

I had a silver 2002 model in 2004. I took the family skiing in the Alps and managed to average 12.5mpg on the return journey to Derby! Even then I had rust attended to under warranty. I remember front suspension judder under hard acceleration and numerous sensors popping. I’ve since had 20 years of diesel BMW X5s which are leagues ahead.

Definitely take the rear seats out! I’ve got none in the back of my 2000 ML320 and the boot is huge! Not a fan of the rear seats in this era of ML. Great car though! 🤩

Enjoy! I owned a 2001 ML 270 CDI back in 2009, put about 200 000km on it, I remember it had a small display right up above the interior mirror showing average fuel consumption, no idea if the 55 AMG will have the same.

I think you are wrong about the 7 seats. If the third row windows open that is a factory 7 seater not just had them fitted. And if Merc never did a ML55 with 7 seats….. that’s not a 55. But I think you could get the 55 with 7 seats and that’s a rare thing now!

What a cool car, I bought the exact same car in the same Tanzanite blue in 2007. I think new it was around £60k but fuel had just shot up to around £130p a litre so I picked up off a trader for £6500. Little bit of TLC and it was one of the best cars we've owned. Not exactly a dynamic drive but all that car with a lovely AMG V8 for peanuts. When we eventually sold it I met a German bloke at Manchester airport who had flown over to buy it and drive home. Probably still going 😂. Good luck with your's Mat

It's done a 1000 miles a year because the owner ran out of money for fuel. Tax rates are obscene and servicing is a worry. Nice vehicle though.

First thing I would do is take the plastic cill covers off before I spent any real cash on it. At least the flared arches will hide the rust around the wheels!

I was said that removing plastic sills will make me sad (because nearly everybody became sad). And that was true, I found big hole... and small statue of St. Maria and small cross with Jesus fell with rust from that hole (near rear left wheel). So I have mixed feelings now. There is hope. Actually rusty sills is not end of world as long as frame is not rusty. I has seen far worse on older mercs.

Have someone like carphonics retrofit carplay to the original head-unit and that things a handsome daily. I'm sure that two tone nonsense was a semi-standard AMG car thing around this time? A buddy has a 2001 E55 in silver that has grey and darker grey leather seats.

Budget on 1k on the least reliable suspension design of any Mercedes every made? I'd be interested if you decide to sell after SPC have finished but I'd be amazed if the 55 does not become an overspender. So nice to see a 55 that is not silver and wonderfully no supercharger reliability issues that were problems with the early charged 55s. The 2 tone leather was the 'default' AMG styling from 94-2004 era until Merc took control. SO many of the C36 and C43 were black and cream or weird colours.

I was looking at this car. I also own a 2003 ml55. What I don't underdtand is the car has the 3rd set of seats. My ml55 has a spare wheel there as ml55 had an addition fuel tank meaning the spare wheel couldn't go underneath and was moved inside. Did the previous owner provide the wheel / interior trim and boot cover? If not they are so hard to find. Also the green interior was a special edition designer or something But those tend to be green exterior. So has this interior been swapped? That put me off this car. I've had mine for 8 years. Love it. I would swap out the crank sensor as they fail and check the aux water pump as I bet that has failed. If it only has one key then good luck as mercedes stopped providing spare transponder chips and keys.. There is a trip meter in the top above the rear view mirror. Has compass and fuel used. Mine averages 7 to 18mpg. The squealing brakes is due to disks they sound worn and have a lip. I bet your pre cat front 02 sensors need swapping plus check ur cats as these slowly break up and rattle. Also check your fan module as they break and rust behind the rear wheel arch liners. I would also check the sunroof drains as these block up and cause water to flood into the footwell. The drains exit from behind the front wings. Use an air line.
