I drive a minty 2004 Jaguar X-Type 2.5V6 SE Estate and find it an interesting contrast to the Rover 45 V6 I owned in 2018. Includes a demonstration of the Quickclear heated windscreen, drizzel, grimness and some nice noises (not the indicators).
HubNut store can be found via: hubnut.org and will be operating even while Ian is overseas. Thank you.

That's an excellent observation. I never thought about that before but I think you're right. That part of the car seemed familiar but now you've mentioned it I can see why! Also on an aviation note, I think that the "spinners" that cover the speedo and tachometer needles were deliberately shaped to resemble the prop spinners on some classic aircraft.

But why is being based on the Mondeo such a bad thing? The Mondeo had always been a benchmark in its class and Mk3 Mondeo(on which X type is based) especially was a leap ahead of its rivals like VW Passat. If being based on Mondeo is such a catastrophy, then the A4 was based on VW Passat. Clearly the X type had its failings, but in no way was the platform to blame for that. I prefer the contemporary Mondeo for its styling, engine range and space utilization over the retro looking X type, but there is no better platform Jaguar would have got for its 3 series rival.

Can't believe these cars get so much bad press. I bought a mint 02 plate 'JagDeo' for £1,500 four years ago - as a temporary runaround between buying another Merc E Class. Over 4 years down the line, it still looks and drives like it is absolutely brand new (although my 2.1 V6 sounds a lot more refined than this model). Absolutely gorgeous cars. I've just come across this report, only two years late, but as an x type owner for the last four years, I have to say that they are very underated. Most of the negative press comes from people who have never owned one. You get a lot of car for very little money. I use mine daily and as it's the diesel I agree with you about how bad it sounds, but with the economy as good as it is, I can accept a bit of noise . Really what's not to like, very economical and service part's are very cheap. Keep up the good work, I enjoy watching your reports, it's a nice change to have someone who understands the vehicles but isn't up his own a**e.

Despite the odd comment about this part and that part being straight from a Ford, nothing that a driver or passenger was likely to see, or touch on a daily basis came from straight from a Ford. Even if a part was based on a Ford one, it was tweaked to make it unique. Unlike the early Ford era Aston Martins, Jaguar got away with not simply raiding the Ford parts bin. A diesel X-Type wasn't available at the car's launch, as Jaguar didn't like the Mondeo's 2.0L engine and were unconvinced that there was enough demand for an oil-burner. Lack of sales to fleet buyers soon put them straight on that last point. Then the only engine that was available at short notice was the previously rejected unit from the Mondeo. A lot of work went into "refining it" in the time available. IIRC the difference was noticed by the press at launch.

Another Hubnut video I agree with 100%. I promised myself a X type but somehow it hasn't happened as yet. A couple of friends had x types. One had a diesel which was as dire as Hubnut says in his review & the other was a 2.5 v6 x type saloon which I like a lot. Sadly he got rid of it due to the "Mondeo in dress" comments he kept hearing. Wouldn't have bothered me myself.

The V6 sounds absolutely wonderful- you don’t need a stereo. My dad has the 2.0d and they do sound terrible outside. Very good on fuel though. They do feel quite cramped inside though (the column stalks are lifted off the Focus mk1) and the all black interior is quite depressing. Cream and wood is the way forward with a Jag. The diesel engine is a nightmare with numerous faults that can raise their ugly heads ie. Turbos, turbo actuators, egr valve problems, injector problems. We are Jag lovers but can't help but remain loyal to the good old Jaguar derived XJ of the time and the pre-2003 X308 as well as it was essentially before the Jaguar range became 'modern' in our eyes... like this X-type. So reluctantly I settled for an X-type Tourer.. After spotting the X type used is this very video 12 months ago, I just had to have it. It's been a very well cared for car and has wanted for nothing going by the excellent history tgat came with it.... and it's not rotten...! Since having this X-type, I've almost lost the urge for an XJ.... there are some pretty crap examples out there.

I had forgotten about the estate. I never liked the saloon styling because it seems be trying to be a mini XJ (X350) instead of being its own design and the hump on the rear wing above the wheel arch is too humpy, the XJ isn't like that. The video has made me realise that the estate solves this, and the 4WD makes it a geniune niche car. This with a set of winter tyres would be a weapon in poor weather. Thanks for posting.

I think the Mondeo DNA is a good thing. The Mondeo is a very good platform to develop from. Adding permanent 4wd and a more powerful engine basically means you have a car that trumps the hot Mondeo, the ST220 (except the Jaguar is necessarily more softly sprung). Don't buy the diesel, it's not worth the grief. I had a 3.0 V6 manual saloon in black with black leather interior and black trim. It was an excellent car, looked nice, drove lovely, and presented zero issues. What's more it had the sills already replaced so there weren't massive worries on the horizon. I would definitely say get a 3.0 manual. The automatic transmissions are a known weakness, and are under extra strain due to the 4wd system. Furthermore the 2.5 is just as thirsty as the 3.0, so you might as well have the extra power. The 3.0 is firmly in quick car territory, it's quite racy in an X-type. Your main downfall owning one of these if it's a good one will be fuel economy. You won't see over 25 MPG on a mixed cycle. The equivalent XJ6 (X350) with the same engine is more frugal believe it or not!

Funny that people in my country thought it was "super expensive" because it was a Jaguar (they're relatively rare around here). The most important maintenance was to change the oils in the back differential (because it was AWD). But when the maintenance was done it never gave any problems at all. @@bmwman1981 an X-Type is roughly 19% shared with a Mondeo. The entire platform was redeveloped by Jag. Not even the same size anymore. Plus the 2.5 and 3 V6s had Variable valve timing, designed by Jag. Passive rear steer and awd. Yes, parts are pretty much the same on the basics because, you know, Ford owned Jag and supplied "reliable" parts. Only 2.5 or 3 litre V6 for the US 🇺🇸. And only AWD. 2.5 had manual, automatic optional. I have ridden in both sedan and wagon (saloon and estate), and I like both. Funny, the redesigned XJ came out, I thought that the large Jaguar look so similar to the X-Type, which is a positive and negative. All those buttons were for the integrated mobile phone, which was a Motorola, branded for Jaguar, hands-free calling and such. I knew this was Mondeo based, and entry level, but Ford want at least 100,000 copies to be sold, which I believe they never did make it. And you could get navigation as well, just one very large screen. You missed rear wiper action! And yes, these vehicles are under appreciated, but still glorious, and affordable way to get into a Jaguar!

I don’t know whether it is simply the power of suggestion or not, but I’ve always thought that Jaguars, do look a little bit ‘Cat-Like’, as opposed to many of their drivers whom would appear to be ‘Catty’. There is an markable difference. There would seem to be an overwhelming number of X type drivers whom assume the right of way is exclusively their prerogative and beep and scowl at you, like you are a C Type, if you appear on their radar. At all. Like a territorial thing. Irritating times. I do quite like this Estate. ‘Tidy’.

This is the first review I can't agree with, the sills rot top and bottom, the cheap horrible looking ford switchgear shouldn't be in anything with a jag badge, the dials are horrid, and worst of all they drive like a Mondeo, with leather good by Mondeo terms, but , they just don't feel like a jag, light and tinny doors etc , so to me the poor mans jag or Mondeo in a frock is a wholly deserved title, luxury on a budget though as even good ones are cheap. A 2.5 v6 or cdti connoisseur se spec 75 has its niggles, but is a wholly nicer place to be along as its an auto box , a much nicer box. and can also be had for peanuts . the dials in the 75 are also much prettier , all my opinion of course! the 75 has many niggles and flaws and are certainly not a perfect car either but luxury motoring for cheap somewhat like these.

The ridiculous thing is that I have an XK8 of the era and people accuse that of being a Ford, and that's a completely 100% Jaguar car that at most has some electrics, interior switches and fuel pump from Ford. But even just a few components like that are enough apparently to make it a Ford. So I'm certainly not surprised that over the years the X-Type has been labeled as entirely just a Ford.

My wife had the 2.2 diesel, also an estate. Ours came just at the facelift time which meant that it was fitted with DPF filters which made it entirely useless for the commuting it was bought for. However it was a very versatile engine (filters aside) lovely to drive and you would never know it was diesel from inside apart from the eager shove in the back when the turbo kicked in - sometimes a little belatedly... though to be fair, the surge made up for the wait. I think Jaguar cut the model much too early. On a factory tour, I talked with an engineer who told me the X-Type estate was actually mostly the equivalent Volvo model, I forget which, but when parked next to them, it was immediately obvious.

It would be interesting to compare it with the 2000-2006 Ford Mondeo Estate. My mother has one, a 56-plate Ghia 6-speed manual. With the 2.0 150ps TDCI engine that you said sounds awful. I agree, it's loud and rattly at idle, but on the move it smooths out immediately and is very pleasant to drive, lots of low-down torque & decent acceleration, although it might aswell have a rev limit of 2500rpm because that's all you need, and above that it sounds terrible. However, Ford fitted loads of sound deadening material, so although the engine is loud from the outside, on the inside it's no more noisy than my mk1 Petrol Focus & I like driving both of them. The advantage of the Diesel is fuel economy, the Focus does 30-40mpg, the Diesel does 50+ all the time, probably helped by not wanting or needing to rag the thing as I do with my old heap ;) The Jaguar has a more interesting and upmarket interior, which you'd expect as they were more expensive, but seems to share the same plasticky centre console with a different armrest, my main gripe with the Mondeo. Cost-cutting gone too far methinks. And surprising, because I can't see much interior parts sharing beyond, possibly, the materials used for the boot cover and roof lining. Overall though, the Mondeo is a decent car, even if the interior is a bit clinical, black and boring. The boot on the Mondeo Estate is better for load-lugging, it's the same length & depth but has an almost completely vertical tailgate, and the "vertical strip" rear light clusters result in a wider boot opening. So if you want a cavernous Estate car to lug large loads of crap around with ease, get the Mondeo Estate. We've just finished using it to assist with emptying a 5-bedroom house, essentially it's been a glorified 2-door van for the last 6 months, and I don't think it would have been as easy to do with the more restricted boot opening and angled back window of the Jaguar. Horses for courses, really. Mondeo Man & those who wanted a more comfortable van were probably never going to buy the upmarket Jaguar anyway. PS: If the rear parking sensors are the same, check the electrical connector that attaches the sensor/wiring assembly to the feed wire that pokes out of the rear chassis leg. It's on the driver's side, supposed to be shoved in the gap on the side of the tubular metal bumper mount. Ours stopped working, and all that happened is that the connector had fallen out & was just rattling around close to the exhaust, which had partially melted the connector. So I just removed the connector, got another one from a scrapyard, reattached with the added assistance of Duct Tape so it'll never fall out again, fixed. Maybe they fixed that design flaw in the Jaguar and/or it's different, maybe not, but might be worth the owner checking if that is indeed the problem because it's an easy cheap fix.

The 323 would have been the nicer car retrospectively but I had it in my head I wanted 4wd if spending £25k and the X-Type simply drove better than an A4 of the time, albeit with shonkier plastics. Had a tad more punch than the Audi too. There was also a lot of hoo-hah about the 'baby Jag' at the time and I'd be lying if I said I didn't get swept up in that.
