I'm becoming addicted to these High Peak videos and I'm so pleased to see there are such honest dealers around. Most of the dealers I've known would never have been so decent as to replace the cambelt. Much easier to tick a box on the service records and 'who would ever know?' Well done, I'd buy a car from you if I needed one.

What a shame someone has left it get so bad. The FL2s are fantastic motors, I've had two great ones. Glad you mentioned the key repair; I'm picking up a 'new' car next week and it needs a replacement shell so I've now got in touch with the guys at KeyFax. And £60k to use Autotrader per year??? Wow, I wouldn't have guessed it to be so high as that!! Loved the euphemism Matt but doesn't conjure up the nicest of images of you sat at your desk in your office! Lol

I am with you when it comes to maintaining your vehicle. I have religiously maintained my vehicles from new until they were sold or traded in. In over thirty years of driving, I have only had one no-start, caused by a bad cell on a new battery, and one vehicle that broke down on the road and had to be towed and that was due to a faulty fuel pump relay. I don't replace my vehicles until they have 250,000 or more and I have enjoyed excellent reliability and durability from many vehicles considered to be problematic.

The point about the Autotrader ratings is an interesting one. It clearly works if you're comparing one 3 year old 30k miles Golf with another 3 year old 30k miles Golf, and where there are 200 other near identical ones to allow plenty of comparable evidence and a high level of certainty about relatives values. However it becomes increasingly problematic as cars get older and rarer and where condition and previous maintenance is everything. I wonder if they should scrap the rating scheme on cars above 10 years old.

Full service history, good bodywork, etc but ended up putting a further £3,500 into for a refurbished rear diff, discs & pads, air con recharge and a timing belt. It is the way it goes sometimes, but i did enjoy the car

I remember when I was a kid, my parents bought a new base spec Freelander 2 in 2008 on a typical 3 year PCP deal. In those 3 years the power steering pump went and the manual gearbox began to pop out of reverse, eventually refusing to go into reverse altogether. They've now got a 2017 Disco Sport and, credit where it's due, that car's never given them any trouble in 5 years and the fit and finish of that is night and day compared to the Freelander 2. My Mum still loved the Freelander 2, though, so it was doing something right.

I recently sold my LR FL2 HSE which I have enjoyed owning - although they aren't money pits all year round, they occasionally become money pits when everything goes wrong on them at once. Repairing a 4x4 system that likely hasn't been maintained isn't cheap! The diffs break, the Haldex system is literally never maintained because people/mechs don't even know its there, and people put crap tyres on them! I gave mine the full treatment in the time I owned it but I'm much happier with my BMW i3 - doesn't drive like a barge and just so much cheaper to run! Won't be going down any bridle ways in the i3 though 😉

If (usually) the boot release switch is broken, you can open the boot by pressing the lock and unlock buttons on the dash together at the same time, push both and hold and it will open the boot. Also, and this isn’t a plug, there is a company called Bell Engineering that specialises in Land Rover. I had a freelander, it will go down in our families history as the worse car we’ve ever owned. Quite literally a different fault appeared every single time we used it. They’re like a very cheap Chinese copy of a Tonka toy, they look the part but they aren’t fit for purpose. I fixed and fixed and fixed it for approximately 18 months until enough was enough when I sold it for a massive lose, just wanting to wash my hands of it. When the buyer came to see it, I literally threw them the keys, said ‘it’s a bag of sh*t’ and closed the door on them, this high pressure sales tactic obviously worked because I never saw that bag of nails again.

You really need to stop buying these bangers and expecting a Rolls Royce. I think you need to get out of the game.

Hi Matt good advice on spending more and getting a better car.

Yeah... We've all been there before when you spend far too much on your car, and you justify it by saying 'I've covered the biggest bill now - it'd be a pity not to finish with X Y and Z!'. Why not put this well sorted Freelander 2 up on your raffle website to try to maximise your outlay - everyone loves a well sorted Landy! As always, love your content, along with the advice of what cars to avoid (which most of us can acknowledge from our own experiences).

Literally watching this video as soon as you mentioned Rumble I immediately said in my head diff my dad had a freelander 2 like this and had 4 tyres 2 wheel bearings before the diff was checked.

Sold my Freelander 2 for £1500 to Carwow last year. I could easily have gotten much more for it, but a 4.2 supercharged Range Rover tempted me too much. Mine was great, it was an HSE with the rear seat entertainment package and all options fitted. Drove great and was relatively decent on fuel at 34mpg average

Great video as usual. I had a Freelander 1, and this model is a definite improvement. Having said that, an Ox and cart would be an improvement over the mark 1. Should anyone be wanting a 4x4 for the coming winter, then this is the one to get. It has had everything sorted, so it is not £500 over priced. Look after this, and it has a lot of life left in it.

Great video, as always, Matt. I did my apprenticeship at a jaguar Land Rover dealership many years ago. In my time, i've owned many cars, but i never owned anything with the green oval badge.

Hi Matt, great video and you certainly earn your money. This just shows the pitfalls and money holes you can encounter when buying second hand cars unseen. Keep it up!

Many Thanks for this video. After running Discos for the last 17 years, (only 2), a TD5 and a Disco3. Im now facing a massive MOT bill for more than the vehicle is worth and thought about a Freelander2 as a less costly alternative. Will take your words of wisdom forward with me when finding my next Landy.

10:10 Matt, I always tell the same to my parents with their cars, well I used to a lot of times until I got my own car now I look after mine with regular services, parts replacing, fluids etc. They only see the financial side of things like impacts and such but ignore the fact that their cars are road hazards that are dangerous to even get in and drive, not to mention they are always dirty and have stains all the time. The worst thing is me, as a son, I can't do anything I keep reminding them but they wont listen 😭😭

Well I too have a Stornaway grey FL2 GS Auto so this video was just too close to home… 😂 I’ve also shelled out for a diff rebuild with uprated bearings, cam belt, water pump and an air con rad, but it’s given me nearly 70k of faultless motoring and has proven to be an excellent towing vehicle to boot. Great vid, keep up the good work!

Hi Matt, I've been watching since you started, so you can assume I'm a supporter, but in this case I can only assume you went to all this this agro and expense knowing the KZbin income would equal, or exceed your normal gross margin. This particular Freelander would have been so easy to walk away from. Keep up the good work.

I would gladly buy a car that is above the 'Good price' mark but has been looked after so nicely by you or any other car dealer for that matter. You've overspent but that goes a long way. Great eye opener these videos, keep em coming!

What can I say Matt, a hard lesson to learn, but thanks for sharing good advice for private buyers and SME traders💜👍✌️😊 The Freelander 2 is the only LR I'd feel, reasonably, happy to buy, but spending £5k plus is probably the best route🤔🤔

Excellent vid as always. I bought my 2008 HSE (130k miles)for £900 as a none runner from Copart. Am now in it for £2300 with a replacement gearbox, subframe, cam belt, battery two control arms and two track rod ends and inner tie rods. Luckily all done on my driveway. I'm at the puckering moment as I'm about to take her for her MOT. Fingers crossed the work has not been for nothing.

Sorry it always seems to cost you a packet to get these vehicles right, but you do an outstanding job of putting faith back when it comes to dealers. Plus, you are saving vehicles that would otherwise be scrapped or worse, sold on to an unsuspecting mug. Many thanks for the effort you put in saving these cars, we all appreciate it. Keep up the good work. All the best.

When I saw your sweatshirt I thought the first letter was a ‘C’ with the seatbelt covering letter two. I stupidly put the last two letters together and thought that was a clue as to what you’d referred to yourself as for overspending!! Joking apart though Matt, I’m forever referring back to your old videos now that I’m looking for a new car. I absolutely trust your honesty. In short… Thank you.

I bought my FR2 new and there was an issue with the steering rack. It had 3 in it's first year. I was told it was a common problem. Main dealer services were pricy --could be £900 a time. Just before the three year guarantee was up I made a list of about 8 things that needed fixing. When I picked it up they said they could not find anything wrong but at it's first M.O.T and service all these faults were reported and I had to pay for them. I found a 4x4 specialist to look after my FR2 and they have been brilliant and a lot cheaper. Cam belt replacement only just over £200. You don't need to change all of it. It does all I want it to and I feel safe whatever the road or conditions. It's brilliant in Mud, Snow or ice.
