I just helped rebuild one of these engines. Basically the oil change drips oil on the plastic water pipes and the coolant pipe fails, which then takes out the water pump and then the heads. Don’t let a Barney change the oil and if you ever get a low coolant light, don’t drive it until you swap out that pipe under the supercharger. The tank behind the engine could leak as well but that wasn’t the case on those RR. Fair warning, M8s.

Having owned an LR4 for about six months (it was also on its second engine), this is....painfully accurate. Trepidation leads to excitement (oh look, mines not a lemon, yay!), leads to sadness, leads to despair. So, so many issues in six months. So many denied warranty repairs. Six months was my limit, and I've owned many patchy, leggy and somewhat unreliable cars - so my tolerance is high. It was sold and replaced with a Touareg. Not nearly as dashingly handsome, but much more reliable and actually just as capable. Still miss that cavernous interior, and the split tailgate - oh how I miss that split tailgate.

The main reason is that car manufacturers have to keep up with ecological standards and in order to do that, they have to make their engines more difficult in terms of engineering. For example, an old d4 from Toyota was using like 15l/100km and the new engine from jlr inline 4 2.0D has a fuel efficiency of 7L/100 Km. And it all comes down at a cost of reliability. I am pretty sure companies are not fond of having the "Unreliable car" company.

Had a 2019 Passport and it was the most unreliable vehicle I’ve ever owned and I had a Jeep in the 80’s. The Passport had issue after issue and was at the dealer pretty much monthly. Even when it was running it drove like a tug boat. Never again.

Thank you... For reminding me why my Honda Pilot was such a rewarding, frugal, reliable, worry free decision while I lust for a Land Rover. Every time I think of trading "up" into a Disco etc I come across a story like this....

Top Gear used those as film cars for many years! Also- the 5.0 V8 didn't just have random timing chain failure, Land Rover was recommending 16,000 miles between oil changes when these were new, lots of owners that stay on top of maintenance are still going strong on original chains

I can't complain because a Land Rover saved my life. I was tapped in a mountain blizzard; we were cold and didn't have any camping gear or even anything to start a fire. Thankfully that trusty Land Rover sensed that and conveniently started an electrical fire. It spread to the supple leather and burned all night, hell it even alerted rescue helicopters to our location. A Toyota Landcruiser wouldn't have done that!

Had a Disco 4, it stranded us on a motorway due to a faulty fuel level sensor. It thought that the tank was empty. It was not. Fantastically expensive to fix. Wonderful car to drive; comfortable, quiet, spacious and plush. But hard to resolve the constant knot in the stomach as you wait for the next thing to go wrong.....

How can that leave you stranded? The engine doesn't just switch itself off when fuel gauge reads zero

My understanding is that the later years of the LR3 is the choice as far as Land Rovers go, but if I’m going to get a vehicle like this to strand myself in, I’m looking at getting an R51 Pathfinder.
@landroverclassics54848 ай бұрын
Great content guys! Well done. All kidding aside about LR reliability reputation, the LR4 is an incredibly versatile and distinctive design. As for the failed water pump, that is perhaps the most common fault on these vehicles (anywhere between 50-80k kms). Once the water pump is repaired the 3.0 V6 SC engine is incredibly reliable from experience (and many others who have chimed in anecdotally on forums). I've been running two of these for a while now with either no or only minor issues. The latter of which I easily (and inexpensively) repaired on my own. The reality is that so many people, including Land Rover owners, love to joke about reliability issues but truth be told, my Land Rovers have been more reliable than the German-made vehicles I've owned (despite being models that were well rated for reliability!)

I'm sure it's been mentioned in the comments already but the timing chain issues is across the board with pretty much every manufacturer and I say this as a technician that's worked at bmw to audi/vw, mercedes, lexus, infinity, Nissan and now own my own shop. So almost all domestic vehicles have timing chain/guides/vvt issues. But when I was at JLR for the majority of the past 8 years, if you took care of the timing chain guides when you start to hear the noise it never results in the car needing an engine in the future. But since the majority of manufacturers have gone to timing chains and increased oil change intervals we've seen an increase in engine problems. Customers will do what customers do...if you extend oil change intervals...they will always go past that and that's always going to end up with negative results.

You can actually shift while the knob is retracted. Keep an eye on coolant leaks from the y-pipes behind and under the supercharger, that’s what kills those engines.

Those might be reasonable and affordable choices, but they don't bring anything fresh or new to the table for viewers. Land Rovers are such cool vehicles when they work. I do understand why people buy them. The hot ticket is to buy two, so while one is getting fixed, you can drive the other.... Maybe three, then you would have reliable transportation..... I think i'm gonna stick with my 4 Runner.

If you're worried about a window in the back that can open, maybe could try a 4runner as its roll down window would be out of the way and the camera guys can be inside safely.
