I just helped rebuild one of these engines. Basically the oil change drips oil on the plastic water pipes and the coolant pipe fails, which then takes out the water pump and then the heads. Don’t let a Barney change the oil and if you ever get a low coolant light, don’t drive it until you swap out that pipe under the supercharger. The tank behind the engine could leak as well but that wasn’t the case on those RR. Fair warning, M8s.

The problem is there is literally nothing out there in the market that ticks all the boxes of the LR4. Great windows. A unique third row with 3 split. Lays flat. Split rear tailgate. High ceilings. Great use of space. And it’s capable. It’s a great car to spend time in on the road. It has classic styling that ages really well. And here I find myself with a LR4 in the garage. Now you just need to start a campaign for a proper LS swap. The unicorn.

Having owned an LR4 for about six months (it was also on its second engine), this is....painfully accurate. Trepidation leads to excitement (oh look, mines not a lemon, yay!), leads to sadness, leads to despair. So, so many issues in six months. So many denied warranty repairs. Six months was my limit, and I've owned many patchy, leggy and somewhat unreliable cars - so my tolerance is high. It was sold and replaced with a Touareg. Not nearly as dashingly handsome, but much more reliable and actually just as capable. Still miss that cavernous interior, and the split tailgate - oh how I miss that split tailgate.

@@Snk13_tyJLR have very good engineers who like to do their own thing, so they are very capable cars that drive incredibly well. The problem is that they rush everything out too quickly, without enough money to do it completely right, and their manufacturing department has issues with building things right, or suppliers seem to give them substandard parts and they don't check them because they must assume the supplier did it right first time.

The main reason is that car manufacturers have to keep up with ecological standards and in order to do that, they have to make their engines more difficult in terms of engineering. For example, an old d4 from Toyota was using like 15l/100km and the new engine from jlr inline 4 2.0D has a fuel efficiency of 7L/100 Km. And it all comes down at a cost of reliability. I am pretty sure companies are not fond of having the "Unreliable car" company.

They were all SOOOO much fun. I would really like to own another one, but pretty much everything they've made since the Disco has turned to hot garbage, including the latest incarnation of the Defender. Every time I have the feeling I should buy another Land Rover, I go to KZbin and remind myself how bad they've become. It makes me really sad, but it cures my need to own one again. The only thing to worry about is the rear coolant crossover manifold, and any of the Ford accessories (I.e. water pump). Take care of it with 10K km oil changes and it will live forever. My wife and I owned an LR3, it was a wonderful vehicle. We both loved it tremendously when it wasn't in for repair. It had the V8, and was so smooth and refined. At one point we were given an LR4 with the V6SC as loaner. Compared to the LR3 it was buzzy and uncomfortable. The seats were stiff and the power delivery was frenetic with a lack of low end. I'd love to have another one for an offroad toy, but the gamble is a real deterrent.

Guys let me know if u ever need help with this car for diagnosis repair info. I am a service manager at a Land Rover dealership. I bought a 2016 LR4 last year for $500 with a blown engine and installed a new one. Please make sure all of the plastic coolant pipes under the supercharger are replaced and that the engine cooling fan works. They both fail every 50k and that's how I ended up with my lr4 girl didn't want to pay 22k u.s. for a long block. If u overheat it the engine is done. That engine is the 5.0 bock with 6 cylinder heads. Also you should get solid bushings in the front control arms.

I’ll be honest… I have a 2009 LR2 with ~149k miles…haven’t had one issue and have done regular maintenance on it. Changed brakes a while ago, flushed fluids, replaced shocks once. Love it. I also have a 2015 RR sport SE with ~89k miles, had one issue with a coolant hose which was made of plastic so did cost a lot to pull and replace the parts..otherwise it’s been a rockstar.. not sure I’ve ever met anyone who’s had issues with LR but I always see tons of comments about poor quality.. to each their own I guess

@@kyreerollerson kinda true, but I'd say is more of a Ford rather than a Volvo. Which is not very different since at the time Volvo was also owned by Ford. The AWD system also isn't fully made by LR, is mostly a Haldex controlled by LR software, which is a nice combination

Top Gear used those as film cars for many years! Also- the 5.0 V8 didn't just have random timing chain failure, Land Rover was recommending 16,000 miles between oil changes when these were new, lots of owners that stay on top of maintenance are still going strong on original chains

I can't complain because a Land Rover saved my life. I was tapped in a mountain blizzard; we were cold and didn't have any camping gear or even anything to start a fire. Thankfully that trusty Land Rover sensed that and conveniently started an electrical fire. It spread to the supple leather and burned all night, hell it even alerted rescue helicopters to our location. A Toyota Landcruiser wouldn't have done that!

Great content guys! Well done. All kidding aside about LR reliability reputation, the LR4 is an incredibly versatile and distinctive design. As for the failed water pump, that is perhaps the most common fault on these vehicles (anywhere between 50-80k kms). Once the water pump is repaired the 3.0 V6 SC engine is incredibly reliable from experience (and many others who have chimed in anecdotally on forums). I've been running two of these for a while now with either no or only minor issues. The latter of which I easily (and inexpensively) repaired on my own. The reality is that so many people, including Land Rover owners, love to joke about reliability issues but truth be told, my Land Rovers have been more reliable than the German-made vehicles I've owned (despite being models that were well rated for reliability!)

I'm sure it's been mentioned in the comments already but the timing chain issues is across the board with pretty much every manufacturer and I say this as a technician that's worked at bmw to audi/vw, mercedes, lexus, infinity, Nissan and now own my own shop. So almost all domestic vehicles have timing chain/guides/vvt issues. But when I was at JLR for the majority of the past 8 years, if you took care of the timing chain guides when you start to hear the noise it never results in the car needing an engine in the future. But since the majority of manufacturers have gone to timing chains and increased oil change intervals we've seen an increase in engine problems. Customers will do what customers do...if you extend oil change intervals...they will always go past that and that's always going to end up with negative results.
