As an ex Saab mechanic/end lover, I am so glad this car found its way to you. Very few people would have given it all it deserved, So thank you! The Turbo Edition was a limited edition that was effectively a diesel, with all the top spec Aero goodies. The rubber spacer you found in the boot was one of 4 delivery tools that fit in the road springs during transportation to the dealers when new! You have created a unique bit of history here! 99% of diesels were company cars that really racked up the miles! Hopefully this car will go to someone who appreciates it. Saab have a thriving owners club, so personally I would get in touch with them, because these cars have a strong following, and the club has fastidious owners who will pay for the right vehicle! And this is THE RIGHT VEHICLE!

Not wishing to piss on any chips, but wasn’t this fitted with the same diesel engine as a Vectra of the day? I seem to remember these being called a Vauxhall in a Swedish suit, but please correct me if that’s just hearsay, and these are actually a true SAAB.

@@rogerwredford Had a 2006 via Lookers GM Dealership in Ellesmere Port Cheshire, absolute fuckin nighmare, literally handed the keys back to the manager and demanded a full refund!! NEEDED , Deep breath , dual mass clutch and flywheel, Both front coil springs, all rear brakes, pads, discs, and new head infotainment head as Saab called it, and the final insult a full set of diesel injectors!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I agree he's too honest for his own good. Sometimes with older cars you need to decide what they are and what they aren't. Most people looking for a car 10years or older are looking for a mechanically sound and reliable car if it's pretty too thats a bonus. Unfortunately as soon as you get into minor body repairs you're trying to make it what it isn't. And paying out a lot of money that you're realiistically not getting back. Unless you can do the repairs yourself. I'd have paid £3500 for a TTid or an Aero in that condition and milage but wouldn't spend money on tarting it up. But a TiD that's not Ulez complient slow and has GM gremlins to contend with that car wasn't worth 2K let alone £3.5k. For that money you'd buy something better With easy accessible parts. I sold my 93 Aero because when it went wrong it was taking weeks to get parts like alternators and intercoolers. For a daily driven car to get to work having it off the road for 2 weeks at a time is no good.

@@Alexander_l322 I read that these don't have as much GM bits on as you'd expect. Like I think the HVAC system was notably NOT a GM unit. This and their insistence on vaguely overengineering anythign safety related meant that it was kind of the worst of both worlds, at least financially.

@@RichO1701e Maybe only 40% shared with the Vauxhall Vectra but even more parts were shared with Opel and Holden Astras and the Cadillac BLS. The Saab 9-3 was fully integrated into the GM Global Epsilon 1 Platform. Furthermore, the shared parts were the big cost items such as the chassis/floorpan and drivetrain - engine, transmission, diff, steering, axels, suspension etc. They may have only been 40% of the number of parts but they represented closer to 70% of the cost of production.

I run a SAAB 9-3 Sportwagon 08, 1.9 TID manual 150bhp, now on 190,000 miles, been well serviced every interval since new. It runs a dream. Had driver seat re padded it's even comfier now. Cruises well. Terrible in 1st & 2nd, but rolling turbo fun in 3rd & 4th sleep many cars. Love it & will keep as long as it goes.

There’s something about Saabs. I had a 9-5 2.3 for a while, back in the day, and it was lovely. Comfortable, quiet, roomy, reliable, quick enough, and there was something about the interior…everything was exactly where you’d want it to be. Banging ICE too. I’d have that car again in a heartbeat. I wish I’d never sold it.

For reasons that I think nobody can explain Saabs are just unique and different than anything else. I have had a few over the years and 5 months ago I bought a 55 plate 93 aero convertible with 156k miles on the clock but it still runs like a dream (touch wood). If you take care of them they super reliable.

Love what you’ve done with this. The car tells a sad story for me, it looks as though it was owned by an elderly gentleman who’s driving skills were sadly waning in their last years as a driver and either they themselves or maybe a family member said enough was enough, this would explain the state of the bodywork for such a tiny mileage. This happened to my dad in his later years, me and my wife told him that he really shouldn’t be driving as he’d end up killing himself or worse someone else. This was after he’d written off his last car. He never got another.

I had a 2001 Saab 9-3 turbo convertible many years ago, it was actually great, and it was the first Saab I had driven, was quick and different to then normal German stuff. Shame Saab isn’t around, I think these have aged decently, a nice alternative to the usual German brands that you could pick up for peanuts.

We test drove it, she insisted it was the best thing she had ever driven. I was doubtful, but then I drove it and was instantly converted. 10 years later, she's on her second SAAB and I now have a 93 2.8T XWD Fusion Blue Wagon.

Matt have you driven the best diesel engine ever created? 2006 reg Honda Accord EX 2.2 diesel...at the time Honda CEO hated diesel but needed to make one for society...he aimed to make a diesel engine that was so refined, it could be petrol....he smashed it! It’s mechanically sound so I’ll do all the necessary bits but then I’m going to fit some Carlos Vandango super wide wheels some colt severs lighting Recaro bucket seats and drive it like a hooligan….a 60 yr old one at that 😂

As a swede it is nice to see this car restored, they are one of the better saab's made and sold pretty well over here, so in this case it sounds like you could have saved a bit of money importing parts from sweden, my dad drives one (petrol) in the same colour over here so I know what the parts cost ;)

There was always lemons with all models, but so far my dads 9-3 has not had a single issue for 10 years, my old 9-5 was on the other side the one with the most issues, had plenty of 9000 and they were pretty good but rusted away. The old 900 was good I'll give you but you cant find them anymore.

What a fantastic job, especially the paint. You're not alone in missing Saab. I picked up a 2010 petrol convertible earlier this year and also probably spent too much money trying to sort everything out. It was a one owner car, so thought it deserved some TLC. I planned to just use it in the summer and garage over winter, but I am enjoying it so much, I'm still driving it. Very sad Saab isn't around any more.

Matt I truly envy you this car and as a Saab owner since 2008, I really appreciate what have you done to save this piece. 10 years ago I bought mine 9-3 with only 34k miles on the odometer and been driving it since. Decided to keep it even when I moved out of the UK. It is such a shame GM decided to kill this brand, but it is still very much alive thanks to very active Saab scene. I am sure someone will notice the opportunity to buy this gem.

GM didn't kill the brand in 2010 they sold it to Spyker who at the time were in F1 having bought the Jordan now Aston Martin team and they also made luxury supercars in Holland. It was in Spykers hands they started getting into difficulty. If GM had never bought them in the mid to late 90s possibly they may still be a manufacturer as they certainly went down hill. My 1st was an M reg 95 ish 900 2.0 se Turbo convertible pre GM far better than both 93s I owned and still own 1 by far.

I think your price is VERY reasonable, considering the mileage and the fact that it's a Saab, the engine will probably be good for 200k+ miles, assuming it is looked after.

I think the engine is from a line of diesel engines that are found on a number of makes of cars. However my mate told me it was still on of the best diesels engines on the market. He had the 1.9 diesel saab with the twin turbo. And i suspect this carhas an aisin torque converter auto box. Toyota own part of aisin and use thier autoboxes as well.

It's a GM engine, also found in Astra and vectra of same era. Mate of mine has a 59plate TiD 93 wagon. Currently on 194,000 miles

@@BigTedsBoogieBox The engine is from FIAT and, unlike many things FIAT, it's extremely reliable. I live in the Balkans and the overwhelming majority of cars driven here are over 200,000km on the odometer. Naturally, only cars that can withstand some abuse end up here and cars with this particular 1.9 diesel are abundant. They also fetch a slightly higher price than cars from the same model with a petrol engine.

Very nice great colour 👍There was a later version which was a slight facelift out for MY11...the final fling for Saab/Spyker. Revised headlights, grille badge, SAAB lettering on bootlid instead of badge and a few other minor bits and bobs.

Good knowledge, another small touch is they upped the 2.0t areo from 210 to 220bhp! My father owned a 2007 93 Areo v6, face-lift interior, Og Exterior, was lovely, a shame the Average mpg was around 22, and the tax was 500 and something, probably would be closer to £700 now.

Respect for what you did, Matt. Great job. But I must say. I was one of those people who loved Saabs. I thought the 93 was such a great looking car. Went and got myself one. It absolutely broke my heart. Horrible reliability. Every week something was wrong with it. My love affair with Saab ended; I realised they're just Vectras or Insignias with a couple of gimmicks added. Gm really decked them over. The quality just was not there post gm. For example, that key fob issue you spoke about. I had that on my 2005 version. Why was it still an issue on the next generation! Same with the console buttons wearing. Just crap quality and attention to detail. I've found their Swedish cousins Volvo so much better in terms of quality.

IMO, Ford did a much better job with Volvo than GM did with Saab. GM, as you said, made Saabs just posh Vectras, whereas the Focus gained some Volvo, most notably that epic 5-cylinder engine.

GM definitely did SAAB dirty - on many occasions! But it's funny how you mention stuff that was bespoke SAAB parts (i.e. switchgear and key fob. Ironically they wasted money on some of their own parts, that turned out to be less durable than the Opel-Vauxhall ones...) Or the classic, black door handles on the outside that turned into a scratched, nasty grey over time... On my YS3F the window regulator completely failed - I'd wish it was an ubiquitous, cheap Opel part! But no, inexplicably, it was a bespoke part as well. In the end I got a spare cheaply from one of GMs self inflicted European disasters - a written off "Saabillac" BLS... Still, the 9-3 has never let me down over several years and 50k, it always found it's way home. (Only once I needed roadside assistance, when the battery died on a chilly autumn day.)

You've saved a future classic. SAAB carefully ignored the GM accountants when they bought the company (even though it was more or less based on a Vectra shell) and continued to make distinctive desirable motors that even now catch your eye as they increasingly rarely drive past. This is a cultural car, so its nice to see somebody taking care of it. Saab cars was always 10 years ahead of other car brands. Got myself a Saab 93 sport combi a year ago 2011 1.8T, almost like new, the first owner ( Old Lady passed away), so when I got it, it was very well kept, and all new inside, I was lucky to have a Cam chain, but did the big service on the car, sand blaster it under, and painted it with 2 component paint, and tuned the engine up ( step 1), so now its drinking less, but got 60 more horsepower, it runs perfect, and I love the car. And about spaceports, there are tons of it, if you know where to find it. Hope you enjoy the car, and keep it.

@@Afraz_9n3Saab only ever managed to sell about 120,000 cars per year. With all the modern compliance/regulatory requirements (homologation, crash testing etc) there was no way Saab could cover its fixed Costs. (Including relatively high manpower costs in Sweden).

You say “massive overspend”, I hear “mouth to mouth resuscitation of fascinating and beautiful woman, who ages with style and grace and no desire to be liked, but who was choking and needed saving”. You’re basically a hero. The only place you and I part company is your appreciation of the ref plate. I don’t see it as a part of the car, but as part of an authoritarian system which exploits us. I rarely wash mine. So, was £3.5k the correct trade value, or should you have bought it cheaper? Nice job Matt.

Refreshing to see n hear someone doing the right thing (especially in this throw away world) and saving a car from the scrapyard. Paying top whack for refurb' tyres etc should suggest to buyer that someone hasnt cut corners, people will always pay for quality. Well done Matt

Great channel and feature 👍🏼 Alongside our Saab 900 Classic, we have been running a 93 convertible for 10 years now and it’s been a pleasure. GM platform/parts keeps the costs reasonable with a bit of DIY spanner work. Saab boffins ignored GM and went their own way with fancy innovative like cup holders & night panel, which adds to the character. Nice work keeping this one tip top ❤️

Great find....I did sell Saab in the early 80's...prior to GM collaboration... and joined the race team in the UK .. There is a great publication that may still exist ' Correctly Conceived and Properly Built '...the one mistake they made was not to offer a small car. RIP Saab...Matt you made reference to the seats...the mold from the Saab Viggen Jet was identical in construction...superb seats.

Absolutely loved pre-GM Saab's. There was an old episode of Top Gear last night (from 2012) when they announced its departure. Hopefully, this will go to an enthusiast who'll cherish it.

In a world full of cars that look and feel the same, especially with a huge 'variety' of mundane electric models, I for one, miss the unique character of Saabs. Not always my 'cup of tea', but you could never describe them as boring. How refreshing! Well done for bringing this example back to life Matt!

That is a lovely car. I’ve had 2 GM era SAABs and have a bit of a bittersweet relationship with them (neither of them ended well for me) but I love the brand (pre GM), and it’s nice to see another SAAB back on the road.

I had a 2011 TTiD - very similar to this car (but manual and in silver metallic) I had it for more than 6 years. Lovely car, very quick (twin turbo really pulls), very comfortable. The rear arch on the driver side was starting to rust and the main subframe was starting to corrode so unfortunately it had to go. Plus, with it being a diesel, it was not LEZ compliant. I was a big Saab fan and was really sad to see the brand go. Loved the touches like the centre console key/starter, the way the handbrake sits as part of the design, the night panel was handy on dark country roads.... Another good video Matt. Nice to see a Saab being given some TLC.
