Classless looks, wonderful seats, superb stereo, etc etc. I’ll probably keep mine forever as it’s just perfect for my work commute. Regarding the alarm service warning message, it’s the internal battery which has corroded in the alarm unit. It’s a faff to change so need to replace the whole unit and pretty expensive so I’ve just removed the siren fuse otherwise it will keep on going off and flatten your battery and annoy the neighbours. However, the alarm will still go off if you lock it with the remote and will still flash the indicators, so I just lock it with the key which doesn’t activate the alarm. Job done.

It’s so lovely to see a man fall in love in front of your eyes! I drove 6-cylinder petrol BMWs for years and had a beloved Trooper as our winter workhorse. When that developed terminal rot in the chassis, my 72 year old father-in-law offered me his 14 year old 140k miles 2005 XC70 as its replacement. I could hardly say no, in spite of hating the idea of living with a Volvo estate. I’d never even seen it as he had loaned it to another family member. I travelled the 200 miles to his home by train, not looking forward to the drive back in the stodgy old thing. When I got there it was the dark green metallic colour with hearing aid beige leather. My heart sank. Still, it had been meticulously maintained and it was the SE Lux spec so had all the toys. He’d had it serviced, MoT’d and it stood on four new Pirelli Scorpion tyres. I got in it and drove away. It was dusk on a frosty November afternoon and I put on the heated seats, tuned the radio to PM on R4, set the cruise control and over the next three hours and 185 miles fell in love. What a car! Comfortable, luxurious, surprisingly powerful, smooth and refined. And 44mpg on that run. It’s since become my daily drive and takes us to Southern Spain and back each month from North East England without any drama. It’s been five years this November and until it is legislated out of existence, it will be our daily transport. And we’ve future proofed ourselves a little bit by buying a 2007 XC70 with the later EU4 diesel engine!

I bought one of these simply to move rubbish to the local tip when I moved home. It replaced a V70 I’d bought for £650 off of Facebook Marketplace (and this car is reviewed on my own channel) I really pushed the boat out spending £2,850 on the 2006 XC70. It had 138,000 miles and two owners - the last, a lady in Highgate who I can just image taking her daughters to Ballet practice in lol. It had masses spent on it, and was perfect. I’ve since spent out on a new Intercooler, AC Condenser, Discs and Pads, Handbrake shoes, and cable, an alternator and fixing the headlight washers - like you this was over £2,000 in costs but now with 163,000 on the clock the engine is strong, and everything else is fine and working too. Yes, it does not handle that well, but it also is not that bad and surprises people especially with its high torque getting going from a stand. I think it’s better than an XC90 and quicker too and cheaper to tax but has the same AWD system. The thing is it is amazing to do long distances in and I’ve got a soft spot for it now. These old Volvo’s don’t rust, and seem to just keep on going so long as you look after them and keep the oil changes they re-resent reliable and cost effective supremely comfy driving.

Great vlog yet again always liked the older volvo cars, never owned one though. These vlogs are so entertaining bit like watching these animal rescue channels. Look forward to watching your road trip.

Great job on Volvo promotions , I sold my 110 Land Rover last year , and bought a Volvo V70 SE Lux . Beautiful .I'm so pleased with it . Thank you for your honesty in your new XC70 .

In 2018 we bought a 2008 volvo v70 black diesel auto and it was very reliable and we went on holiday to Isle of Wight in it and it run like a dream and never broke down been very reliable car.

Great turnaround Matt! I think Volvo’s are cool tanks. I absolutely love the The C30 as it looks so unique. I love to see you review that model.

I was given a 2001 V70 from a family member in September 2022- they have owned it since it was only a couple years old and have done 200,000 miles in it. What a cool old car! Ive had compliments from strangers at gas stations and even one old fella asked me if i would sell it to him (It is in very good shape - the paint looks incredible when polished) - my passengers always comment on how comfy the seats are, the interior design is top notch .. the looks are aging very nicely and i would argue that the design of the P2 series is almost iconic in the 'classic volvo wagon' looks department. Great car!

How that compares with the recent VWs you've bought - it's such a good advert for Volvo, isn't it! No rust anywhere, decent, quality leather inside and a comfortable estate - all for £2.5k! An excellent car for very little money... 👍

I'm so happy you decided to spend money on this thing and then keep it! Can't wait to see your road trip adventures in it! High mileage wagons are cool, I have a 2011 BMW 523i Touring with 402000 kms on the clock myself, and it, too, has had one owner since new until I bought it last year, and it, too, looks and feels like new. Couldn't help but think of the BMW when I watched your vid! I'm keeping it forever, too. 😇

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this eccentric review of a thoroughly solid well made car. I would be interested to know what the resulting fuel consumption figures were. Overall, a great review that makes me feel smug being a volvo owner.

You've inspired me to get my own - have loved these cars from the very beginning. My first car was a 340GL 1.4 (A127 JKL). They appeal to my perfectionist/fixation on having things just right i.e. spending a budget of a small third world country on keeping it on the road and in A1 condition. I would love a Jag XK8 but these are so much more enjoyable

What an impressive car - I think it's been clocked - probably only done 250,000 🙂 Amazing condition for age and such a high mileage.Really pleased you saved it.

Great video. Had my xc70 10 years now and it's clocked 225000 miles and it is ust as good as the day I bought it. It is the perfect all rounder. It works hard but is great for holidays and road trips too. They're worth every penny they command. I agree with you about newer Volvo's, my wife has a new v90 and although it is a lovely car they is no way it will last like my xc. It's a standing joke with the kids that my 20 year old car will outlast her 3 year old one.

Cross climates make sense if you're planning on doing a winter road trip. I love my all season tyres. Mine are Goodyear but I suspect similar. And not just from the grip in the snow but the traction and grip in the wet as well. And my last set had plenty of life in them after 20,000 miles. Only replaced them as I sold the car.

I'm proud of you, Matt. Chalk the costs up to maintenance one does at some point on any car. Cheap tires? What would be the point? Well done. Great ride, economy, comfort and noble good looks. The car may not be the "hot lover" type one swoons over on a first date. It's better. It's the one one wants to come home to every day. Well done!

I always admire your confident statement that everything will “buff out”. Car been in a 100 mph smash “that’ll buff out”; burnt out wreck, “that’ll buff out”; no engine, no gearbox, no body “I’m sure that’ll buff out”. Brilliant!

Nice. Really nice how it turned out. I have owned several of them and love the cushy ride, comfy seats and space in the trunk. So much homelike for me. :D There was couple of engine options for P2 XC70. Firstly when it was introduced in this platform it was called V70XC since early ones had visco coupling for AWD system. And they came with 2,4T petrol engine. Later in 2003 they were renamed XC70 and there was choices of 2.5T or D5 first gen version that made 163 HP. This is engine in your car. They are indestructible and run many many miles if serviced. And most economical as well. You can easily average 6-7 liters per 100 km or whatever it translates in mpgs. ;) Later in MY 2006 they introduced second generation D5 engine with 185 HP. They are very comfy car to drive. Visco couplings were not best to say at least in those. When Haldex was introduced things was better. Apart from that on high mileage sleeve for angle gear worn out. Yours is very nicely equipped. Like memory seats, in luggage you have grocery bag holder and it has HU850 audio system. That was called Premium Sound. So you have Dolby Pro logic sound system with 200W amplifier. And it sounds good in my opinion. Pity they did not stamped the services. Alarm service is because of the leaked battery inside the alarm module. so either ignore it or replace it or you can programm car not to be equipped with alarm. When it comes to suspension your car is equipped with self leveling system or so called Nivomat shock absorbers in rear so most likely they have never been replaced or have been replaced for the normal shocks and springs. Anyhow enjoy your XC70.

If you do go off road with it, look out for the radiator. If you look, you'll see it hangs low, just behind the front bumper. It's not protected underneath so any small bump or scrape will damage it. It's plastic and any upward force will rip the mounts loose, tearing a hole in the side of the tank, leaving you well and truly stuck. Happened to us twice.

I loved my S60 T5, apart from the appalling turning circle! I definitely think manual is the way to go though, you can tell how much power the lazy torque converter boxes sap. This is definitely the perfect kind of car for a go anywhere beater. On a long drive I'd take this over my 2017 TT any day.

Kudos for saving this one. I've just bought a 135k miles, 1 owner, FSH XC90 as a dog transporter and spent a similar amount refreshing it. Love it.
@gavinstirling7088 Жыл бұрын
The issue with the dashboard messages probably related to the intermittent fault with the indicator stalk. Easy and cheap to replace. I own two XC90 of similar vintage and do all the work myself, pretty straightforward cars all round and the D5 is a great engine. Hand brake adjustments are a real pain to get through MOT, the handbrake uses drum brakes on the back.
@rikardandersson7288 Жыл бұрын
I belive the shoe adjusters from the p80 volvos is a direct fit on the p2s aswell since the p2s only use a solid peice of metal in place of the adjuster. That makes it alot easier to adjust the handbrake on them
@gavinstirling7088 Жыл бұрын
@@rikardandersson7288 Yes that's right, good call, I have those fitted which definitely improves the chances of getting them to work, still a real effort though compared to other cars I've owned and self-maintained. It's always disappointed me with the Volvo's that use these parking brakes as I really can't fault any other part of the car.
