Just wonderful, I have been researching "cedar chicken coop" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Machaaldity Coop Blaster - (just google it ) ? Ive heard some great things about it and my brother in law got excellent results with it.

I bought one like that from TS as well and bought a clear sealer and sprayed it. Also if you put blocks under it to get it off the ground, it'll help with the bottom rotting with it always sitting in water when it rains. Good luck!

I work at tractor supply(hopefully they don't hunt me down n fire me after this comment.). There is no such thing as training, they play little videos and managers pressure u to rush through them as fast as possible. You either learn or u drown. My work place has a bunch of workers without forklift certifications, driving forklifts. ALL of our employees are not propane certified but are still expected to fill propane. My mangers has almost ran me over on the forklift 3 times, he is reckless. I hope my comment isn't deleted.

My Suscovich style chicken tractor was around $400 total plus my time to make it (which was a fun father and son project). We added some nesting boxes and roosts. You can convert that coop to a chicken tractor easily with some 2X4’s and wheels (and a table saw). That’s what we did with our old one like that.

Do not put a heat light in it. We found out it the hard way. It caught on fire in one spot. We stopped it before it was bad

Thank goodness you caught it in time! Yes, heat lamps belong in fast food restaurants, not animal living areas. There are sooooo many news reports of chicken coops that have burned (feathers and chicken fat are flammable, so the chickens probably burned alive before they could die of smoke inhalation), and even some people have died from heating their brooders and attached barns with heat lamps. They are dangerous! Even my chick brooders only have a regular incandescent bulb to keep the chicks warm the first few weeks of life, and then I wean them off that. I have raised over 100 birds this way and always have healthy, cold-adapted birds that run around outside even during Maine winters.

Got a similar coop from TS. A tube of Builder's adhesive was needed to put it back together as it shed siding pieces. It has been OK. We moved up to an "Amish Made" coop that cost way more, but I just recommissioned the TS coop for a new batch of Rhode Island Reds. Foxes decimated our flock, so we're almost starting over. We have a tumble down coop that came with our farm... I'm going to put a new sill under it someday soon. Got Broilers and goslings coming the end of the month. Gotta make room for them. Good luck and have fun. Poultry is a blast, and those eggs, still warm from the hen are magic!

Yep... Those coops work when I'm a hurry. I have a few we use as grow out coops for the young birds. I added pt 2"X4" to the base with additional 1" x2" pine. Improved the sturdiness of it.

I just got the duck coop, by the same company, from TSC also. Just looking at it initially, gave me the idea to put epoxy on the inside, and outside. Then, the coop part, has slats, not solid. So, I bought plywood, to fit in there. The floor, they had for it, didn't screw down, so this one will. The company, is based in California, so you would think they could design something that predators couldn't into, they didn't. Now, I will spend more money fixing it to work like it should.

Please look at Carolina coops for inspiration . For around $500you can build a 4x8 coop with 2x4 's and plywood. These Chinese coops are bad.

We bought the same one. My husband actually made it smaller since the chickens are only sleeping in it. We built a fence -run around the entire coop so they have a yard to run around in . It's really cute.

The divided areas on the inside of the coop is called the nesting boxes and when you get chickens you need to make sure they don’t sleep in the boxes they are only supposed to sleep on the bars. I have chickens , but a homemade sled built coop

I bought a similar coop from Tractor Supply last month and it's like an indoor Barbie house.... and cost way too much for almost $600.00, including delivery. We have installed hardware cloth around bottom and put chicken wire fencing around for a larger run for 7 chickens. This coop is made from something akin to sturdy cardboard. We should have made our own from cypress. Hopefully I can talk my husband into building a better coop soon. 🐥🐔🙅🏽👩🏻‍🌾🇺🇸

A friend of mine gave me two of these coops, Both of them were well used and pretty shaky/wobbly ! I took some p.treated 2x4' and made like an L shape and set the coops on the 2x4's and attached the bottom rails to the 2x4's it really sturdy them good! Now i'm gonna put wheels on one end so i can move them around the lot,,,

Piece of advice Chris :) We had 50 laying hens and 4 roosters for over 20 years and I hope you will be moving the chicken coop away from the fencing as we had squirrels and fox and skunks and woodchucks digging under the fence or going over it to get to our chicken coops and we lost a LOT of chickens for that reason my friend !! I swear by Tractor Supply that's where I bought all of my egg incubators and my cat supplies and things for my snakes :o)

One thing I discovered by accident was planting marigolds around the base of the chicken house because for some reason many wild animals take great offense at the smell of marigold flowers and actually I had a huge garden I had to surround with marigolds to keep the critters out of my garden.

I have been raising chickens for years and I have a lot of them now (chicken math, make sure you plan for that). The Tractor Supply coops are visually attractive, and some of them are downright DARLING to look at. You can paint them to match your house if you like. However, they are NOT predator proof. The wood is very flimsy, as you yourself noticed. They are lightweight, and parts can snap easily. The wire is a soft gauge and so loosely attached even a toddler can rip the wire off some of them. Consider that raccoons and foxes are pretty strong, hungry, and SMART, and think about if a neighbor’s dog decided to pay a visit. There are dire results to the cheap way these coops are built. You will need to do something to keep out diggers (rats). Cinderblocks will deter diggers for awhile but rats tunnel horizontally for YARDS so eventually they will get in and eat all the chickens’ feed, making it an expensive hobby. The perches should be wider for hen comfort. 4” is the recommended width especially if you are in a cold winter area where frost bite could be an issue. The latches are not raccoon/fox proof, and also you cannot lock them to keep out thieves or toddlers. (Both an issue on the various chicken groups if you follow them) I’m glad you have a strong fence perimeter, because it will keep out the majority of walking predators and may even deter climbers. This is the IDEAL setting to have one of these coops. At this point the biggest worry will probably be hawks if the chickens free range during the day. I give the coop the same rank, only in eggs, 5 eggs out of 12, because that’s how eggs travel, in packs of 12. Good video, thanks for posting! :)

I HAVE A SIMILAR TS COOP ON SALE 250 AND HAD TO MAKE THE IMPROVEMENTS THAT YOU MENTIONED LIKE TREATING THE WOOD , CAULKING THE ROOF . ITS A GOOD STARTER COOP WITH A GOOD PRACTICAL DESIGN . I PUT MINE ON FLAT SIDE PRESSURE TREATED 2X6 FRAME AND ATTACHED THE COOP TO THAT , MAKES IT MORE STABLE FOR MOVING TO DIFFERENT SPOTS . I HAD TO PUT 1/4 INCH MESH UNDER THE 2X6 FRAME BECAUSE RATS WERE COMING IN TO EAT THE FOOD . I LEARNED THAT RATS MAKE GOOD TUNNELS . NOW I TAKE THE FOOD AWAY AT NIGHT AND JUST LEAVE THE WATER .

Just finished taking mine apart started having problems less then a year after purchase. Cleaning tray rusted berry quickly and would often be stuck due too humidity. The tongue and groove sides will also start having problems. I would not recommend for areas that get more then a few inches of rain in a year. If you keep recommend adding support brace in bottom middle of can double as a perch. Also 2 by 4 frame for the bottom

The ends of the roof should not be blocked by wood, it should be free to drain rainwater. Maybe you can modify the roof truss at the end of the roof by positioning it under the roof

For that $400 ... I am almost done building a chicken tractor almost the same size. It will have shingles rated for 25yrs and strong pressure treated lumber and Coated hardware cloth all around. Much higher grade material all around honestly. Should last decades! (I hope)

We started our chicken coop build on Saturday & spent $500-700 on it, bought hardware cloth, treated lumber, shingles & latches, etc. used some old pallets for roof base & then put roof paper & shingles on and had on hand this amazing compressed concrete board material that is smooth on top for the hen house part to make easy clean out. Doing deep layer method. Check Carolina coops, amazing videos, tips and we’d totally buy one if we didn’t own a construction company😄. But basically we are building a plan like theirs but hubby just built it how we want it. lol no plans. So far with buying our chicks & food, etc & coop we probably have $1,000 bucks in the whole process and our coop is gonna be solid & We can actually walk in it. I will want to add solar lights on outside for ambiance lol & automatic door & I might paint it but it depends bc the old wide pallets look awesome! It has a rustic look so we will see after it’s on. We looked into tractor supply coops and I get it if someone can’t build or doesn’t have time but sadly they are poorly made and are ripoff cost:(. Sorry it’s so flimsy.

After using the Tractor Supply coop for 2 years, I strongly recommend putting it on a treated 4x4 or 2x4 plate to protect it from ground rot. Mine is warped and the bottom is rotten from ground contact.

We bought this same coop from TSC It is a great coop but the siding does start to shrink in the hot sun. We are replacing it with a homemade coop that is much sturdier. Also, we bought the coop because it said that it fits up to 6 hens. It fits 4 comfortable but when we updated our flock to 6 hens, it just isn't comfortable for them.

I would put a 2 foot boarder of hardware cloth around the bottom of the coop. I did that and build a cinder block garden around. I have had many predictors even a bobcat. None have breached my house.

I spent 600 on a 4×8 house with metal roof and 2×4 framing 1/2 plywood flooring and 1/4 walls 2ft off the ground and 8 by 16 ft run all treated lumber with hardware cloth completely closed in built by me. I think I got out pretty cheap!

I got one that was bigger than that one in store and it was around 299$ and was actually tall enough to walk in. The doors not shutting properly is an across the board issue I think because mine does the same if your ground isnt perfectly level everything shifts and doesnt open and shut right😑

You can return it. Tractor Supply has a pretty liberal return policy. My husband works at Tractor Supply on the weekends and I talked to him about it and said it's best to put on a level platform while you're building it. If you don't, it's going to make doors uneven and not line up properly! Hope this helps.

I have 3 of these Cumberlands and we have had up to 8 chickens in each, however, we let them out to free range everyday and they automatically go in at night. HINT: place a 4ftx8ft piece of 3/4 inch plywood underneath and predrill holes and screw down one side and put a long 4ft hinge on the other side to accommodate cleaning it out easily. The plywood will keep weasels from killing your hens!!!

It's going to fall apart... I've got one. I expected better for the money. Check the staples for the mesh. Glue all the joints and add screws. Add a 2X4 frame around the bottom to make it more rigid. And as you said, seal it.

Oh boy. I just purchased this same one a couple weeks ago when it was on sale. Haven’t put it together yet because my chicks are still indoors and I’m moving in the next 2 weeks. @@Webinthewoodsfarm it will make your life easier if you stain the sections before you screw everything together. Take a day and stain all the pieces and then build the coop the following day...just my advice

I have a very similar one. If I could offer a suggestion. The latch on the back panel is terrible. Predators have opened those or they can wiggle loose. I added two, more secure latches. Outside, the bottom wood will last about a year, I reinforced mine with 1 x4 or 2x4 on the inside of the coop. Just a suggestion.

Yea I completely agree with everything you said, i already started adding additional latches and think i'm going to end up just building a similiar coop out of PT 2x4's and going a little bit bigger. This was a good way for me to get introduced to coops and get me something in a pinch. But i have a bunch of ideas for a nicer rebuild.

Chris Graham that’s what I did as well! I reinforced it and use it when I hatch chicks in the incubator now. I added a cable so I can move it like a tractor. At least you have the metal roof. Mine is the shingles...it falls apart very easy.

Hello, I made my coop out of a bunkbed, so the top is sleeping area, fan little ligth and stairs, I dont have roosting bars, I bough a 8$ aluminum tray and pai ted ,made a small lader lay it down and put 6" tall feet under, then place it in the tray, that is the roosting go up to 2nd floor sit tray, they have the bottom for water feder if is cold and nests, I use leftover siding, shutters for doors and 2 old house windows, 1 window is fix 1 open to the 3 nest, it took about 4 days to built, is solid but have to sit and draw a good lay out first, I paid 100$ for the bunk beds the other items I had siding and habitat from humanity hinges shutter etc. Is not a walking but is tall and you can reach for anything easy, I sat the legs in stepping stones and cut a few more legs to reinforce, 1 plastic corrugated roofing panels and 1 metal, ligth in the winter comes trough and in the summer i put a cardboard box for shade i spend about 160$ total, I had a smaller coopfrom a single bed, we built a run with a ramp so if I change cook we just atach it to the wire mess run/cage like, the run has a gate to go out so they can wake up and go in the cover run if I cut free range that day cause of snow or 🌧

A neighbor of mine bought one of these a while back I used to love watching the chickens every time I drove by. Each time thinking it was not sufficient and I meant to talk to him about it never did. and then one day there were no chickens left needless to say the fox broke in and wiped out all but one and I feel guilty as hell for knowing this was likely to happen and didn’t act quick enough. so I’m going there tomorrow to take a look and see what I can do to make this predator proof for real. Those animals suffered and died and didn’t need to.

$399 is cheap even w/ $100 shipping; I just spent $850 on materials converting a playhouse into a coop - added 1 door, 1 window, and new roof and few patch up ($325 of that for labor). It's not even painted yet and no nestboxes yet (just bought Little Giant nestboxes online). So it will be over $1000 with painting job. I have 14 chicks (all juvies, 4 of which are 2-3 months so they are big; 10 are 2-3 weeks). Looks crowded so I just ordered a coop for 4 chickens with no run for $300. Would have been cheaper to buy 3 of that and not convert playhouse. Wood and tin roof are very expensive at this inflation in 2022. .If I had to do it over - I would have just bought 3 $300 ready-made coops. Better to buy a coop than build one.

It's misleading. The newer models look like the older models but are much smaller but still cost 3 to 4 hundred. They just don't hold their value. I have a larger version that is around 3 years old. I put it on 4x4's so it could be skidded around the yard. I am always replacing screws and had to put plywood over the metal. I installed more roosts and they would jump down on the metal and it just was too weak. I built shelves at the corners on the added 4x4's. So the water could remain on the shelf when being moved. Water container is a 5 gallon food grade bucket turned upside down in a pan. Drill a couple holes at the desired water height when the bucket is upside down. I use the pipes with bottom Y for feeders.

I currently have 3 isa brown chickens, 2 asian blacks and 1 polish hen. they arn't full grown yet, but i think it will be the perfect amount when up to full size. Personally, I wouldn't go more than 6.

Neighbor bought one of these and it started to fall apart in a year here in New England. Also, a fisher cat or raccoon tore apart one of the doors and killed half the chickens. I have built a 8' x 10' x 8' chicken coop. Do not buy from Tractor supply or, anywhere else. Build your own chicken coop. Everywhere else is garbage and won't last as long. If you are going to spend the money then just do it right. I spent $3,000 dollars on my chicken coop and run. I have 13 chickens and one Rooster.

I got one and at six months the wood was warped and it started leaking on the roof. Poor wood all the way. I don't suggest buying one again.

I ordered on from Etsy, it said for 4 chickens. No room for 2 with the water, feeder, and nester all inside. Not happy for $495.

Chris Graham wonderful! I’m new to chickens And we’ve been torn between buying a chicken coop from a big box store or buying a custom-made one from a private seller here in Knoxville Tennessee. And we’ve been trying to see what people say about the ones from the big box stores since they’re a little bit cheaper than the one we’re looking at buying from our local seller.

@@belenalee5986 honestly if you are new to chickens and kind of trying this out to see how you like it ect, i dont see why you couldnt start with something from a big box store. if you plan to have a lot of chickens and plan to keep chickens for years then spend the extra money get one made from 2x4s and treated lumber. I'm sure the custom made ones are going to be much more expensive and better built than the ones from TSC or other stores

Chris Graham funny you say that it’s not that much more but my husband is concerned about spending the extra when we can spend that on supplies. He wants to have them for years and I’m just not sure from the reviews that these are going to hold up in the long run. Plus we have the added bonus of the local seller if we have issues and he is making us a chicken tractor compared to us retrofitting a big box coop into a tractor.

You should change this video or do a followup on why not to put chickens in a Chinese Coop. They get stressed and overheated and the coop doesn't last long. Its better to pay 3 times the amount and get 10 times out of it!
