I'm an adjuster for a large insurance company. You mentioned at the end of the video that you haven't really heard of insurance companies sending a flood car to a shop to see if it can be repaired - I can tell that this is something that does happen. The reality of insurance claims are not that an insurance company just looks at a car and says "yep, it's totaled" and moves on about their day. We have to build an estimate for every claim we have. The result of the estimate then determines if its a total or repairable. Now, in most states we can "construct" a total loss by taking the cost of the repairs, combine that with an estimated selling price at auction and if those two numbers exceed the vehicles value they can be declared totals. The #1 thing in deciding if a car is a total or not is the cost of the repair vs the actual cash value of the vehicle. Many states have a specific "threshold" that must be reached to declare a car a total loss. Some states is 70% of the value, some 75 or 80%. Now fresh water vs salt water makes a huge difference in flood claims. The margin of replacement in a salt water loss is far less than a fresh water loss. For example, in a fresh water loss we might write to try and clean carpet vs in a salt water flood replacement is the only option. I had a claim that I worked recently that was a flood claim similar to this, only fresh water, and the vehicle ended up getting repaired at a shop and is back on the road today. I have also had ones that didn't total on the initial estimate, but got to a shop, disassembled and ended up totaling due to all of the hidden damage/issues the shop found after teardown. Now - what I will say is any adjuster with any sort of common sense will always do everything they can do to total a flood car when they look at it the first time because repaired flood vehicles are always a pain in the rear later on down the road. The vehicle owner will always blame the flood (either correctly or incorrectly) for any little thing that goes wrong with the vehicle after its been repaired and as a result we as the adjuster/insurance company become "married" to these cars. My motto is when it doubt, total it out!

Save yourself a bunch of time and just use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the fuses rather than pulling each one out! Also a fuse can appear good to the eye but still have a break - so not only is measuring them faster, it's more accurate. It's literally why they have the two little holes in the top of them!
@peterwarner8541Ай бұрын
Lost two days to exactly that issue on my defender, tiny hairline crack in the fuse blade! Dismantled most of the car in the process….
@nicolashoyt5341Ай бұрын
Honestly that can still yield a false positive. A circuit can have the tiniest connection possible and pass a resistance test still. That doesn't mean that circuit can take a load.
@Beer_Dad1975Ай бұрын
@@nicolashoyt5341 I guess there could be a break between the test apertures and the terminal forks that could still give you a false positive - but in 30 years I've never seen this happen - if that happens - sucks to be you I guess... since you probably won't spot it from a visual inspection either - you'd have to pull the fuse and test it from the contact forks. I've definitely seen multiple cases of a fuse looking just dandy and reading open across the test apertures though.

The key stuck in the ignition was probably the reason for the fully depleted battery. Once the car was powered up again it has no memory of the key being inserted into the ignition. Remove it first, then lock the car and open it again. Before you try this make sure you use the big battery that came with the car. Just fixed a similar issue on a flying spur , kessy is under the passenger floor on a RHD model but i belive its on the same place on a LHD (so drivers floor). There is a set of relays on the angled section between the floor and firewall. Water leaks in here all the time, not just under flood conditions as the drains in the AC plenum block under the bonnet (hood) and water collects in the kessy / under the seats. My issue was corroded wiring to the ignition relay. The main wires just fell out of yhe relay socket. Bentley supposedly sell a wiring harness patch kit for this issue.

The key usually gets stuck in these types of ignitions when the battery dies completely. Would probably bet it's a simple fix and wouldn't try going through all the modules at first. Would eject the key out manually, put in the now-charged main battery, unlock car with remote, close doors, lock car, unlock car, get in and try to start it. What happening under the driver's seat I would ignore, probably blew one of those fuses and fixed it cheaply by wiring them all together somehow.

I'm unsure if VAG still uses them, but you may want to look for fusible links. Over the summer, I was working on one of the modules the back of my 05 Mercedes E500 wagon. I happen to short the metal case to ground after had plugged everything in to test and was reinstalling it into the bracket. I lost my fuel pump and gauges along with a long list of BCM and ECM controlled functions. I checked everything I could find from fuses and relays to checking for injector pulse and spark. It turned out that hidden deep under the 3rd row seat and all of the panels was a small group of exposed flat fuses rated for upwards of 80 amps. One of them was cooked and I was able to find replacements at my local Advance auto that were labeled as VW fuses. Replacing that fuse got my hot rod family hauler back on the road. It was a cheap fix but took way too much time to track down as all of the schematics were for the sedans.

One of the things you flashed by said they were thermal fuses, which means that they are probably self resetting slow fuses. Those are usually used to open on temporary overloads like moving the seat with a 300 lb load or something jammed under the seat. They close again once they cool. Good to have but shouldn't be your problem (I would replace them once you get it running so one of the motors doesn't burn up.)
@johnelectric933Ай бұрын
On reflection, I'll bet those seat motors are bad or the seat is stuck. Those fuses will cycle if the load is shorted. People, for some reason, blame the fuse when they blow.

Sam, use a 21W test lamp to test fuses. This will not only show you the presence of voltage but also if the fuse is good and can support a load of just under 2 Amps. Start in this case at the battery side to find out if any voltage goes to the fuse boxes after passing any big (pyro?) protection fuses and current sensors. Waiting for your follow-up video on this car. Greetings from Crete, Greece.

13:09 - Sam that inline fuse next to the accessory battery looks aftermarket. I've bought a flooded Audi A4 2016 and it has the exact same thermo fuses as shown in the video. I'd first measure with a voltmeter and see if any power is getting there. But my guess is that those fuses are for the power seats, etc. have you tried doing a scan with a code reader? It might give you clues on things like if the kessey is communicating/online, if its accepting the key, etc. the car's ECU should still power up and let you run basic diagnostics

kessy is under the driver carpet. in some models like the porsche cayenne or the touareg its above the pedals. if the model year is after 2007 the kessy will be a continental kessy. on these kessys you cant read the eeprom and clone it to another one, instead you need to swap eeprom and nec processor to same number replacement kessy. (eeprom data is encrypted with processor data and changes each time, if you treat this as normal siemens vdo eeprom kessy will get corrupt) at this moment new kessy at vw are not available(around 2300€) and odis only allows you to programm a new one( fazit exemption approval gets declined) i replace them on a regular base here in berlin germany and charge around 250€ for programming or soldering if customer provides used or new kessy

Meaning there is a smaller battery (the one on the right side of the trunk) that basically never needs tending, and the 'house' battery (my term) that runs everything else that, even if new, will run flat in 6-8 weeks (in my experience) if no battery tender is hooked up.

great show, watching a long list of your buys. Be great to see you buy then sell to see how well the original purchase was and ts value after. Like wheeler dealer!

5:00 here in Canada at copart, if you're not a dealer, the outrageous fees effectively double your bid price. Online bid fee, gate fee, non-approved transport fee, the list is endless.

You don't have to pull out the fuses, you can simply use a multimeter to check the small contacts on top.
