Jimmy, I trained in an aircraft with a 912. When you burp the engine, first check the oil on the dip stick. It should read low. Then spin the prop with about 3 to 4 full revolutions. You should hear two to three expressive burps. That will push the oil back up into the engine. Wipe the dip stick and reinsert. If there is a proper amount of oil the dipstick will read full. If not full add as needed. It is important to do this before starting when the aircraft has sat for more than a couple hours. Do not overfill. I learned this routine from my flight instructor who is also an A&P.

I´m flying an motorglider with rotax. The reason of turning before ist because of the dry sump lubrication. So your oil sump is the can. So when turning your pumping the oil back in the can until ist sounds like your toilet. That´s what we all do at first. Then there is a marking on the dipstck min and max. by the flat spot. If your in between it´s fine until your over minimum in cold. In warm ist rises itself a bit by getting, hotter. And be aware to have the magneto´s off before turning!! The rotax need´s chike when cold just für a minute after starting you can turm off the choke. And there is normally an add. electric fuel pump while starting and take off should be on.

I watched one of these crash with a demo pilot and prospective buyer at the Sebring LSA show years ago. I also have 250 hours in a SeaRey. Yes, they both perished from the low altitude stall spin turning from upwind to crosswind and adding power at the same time and pulling back. Without enough speed, it will wrap up into a stall/spin to the left very quickly.

When you start a 912 it’s at full idle. That allows the enrichment aka choke to work. Hold the choke out and keep the engine rpm high for a bit the while the choke is out add throttle and release the choke I hope that helps.

I worked on one Rotax engine in a Czech Sport plane. I was also a motorcycle mechanic. You need to remove the carbs and service the idle jet, or change it with the same number jet. They don't like to sit for more than a year with some fresh fuel going through them. That is why it wouldn't idle. Fresh gas would probably help too.

Fabric needs the punch test. Get out FAA AC43.13 and read up. Should be fine sitting the hanger all those years. Though I have seen a fellow A&P go right through an upper wing on a fabric punch test. Be careful. Also look at the Piper AD on the J3 and Super Cubs for their struts for how to get an idea to test the struts for corrosion. They'll probably be fine the struts, but Florida and salt water are not good for struts.

Unless the oil is low on the dipstick, there is no need to "burp". If it is low, you burp it to see if there is oil hiding in the crankcase so you don't end up overfilling it. And, it's not really a choke. It's a bypass enrichment system that only really works when the throttle is closed.

You probably found out already. Rotax 912's are a dry sump engine. (AKA no oil pan on engine) This is why the four stroke Rotax engines all have an external oil tank. Checking the oil: Many people check the oil to make sure there is oil on the dipstick. Start the engine and bring up to heat. Then check the level of the oil that way. That way all expansion of oil from heat and running engine level is then determined.
