I Bought a G63 - Why Do People Like These?

I don't get why people like the G tanks, they are like fancy jeep wranglers which are some of the worst driving on road vehicles you can buy. Regardless at some point demand changed from the Range Rovers being the sought after SUV's to the G Series. Anyone want to rent it?

If you really want a capable/economical offroad vehicle you get a Jeep Wrangler or a Toyota 4Runner. You're still better off with a 4x4 truck 1/2 ton to 1 ton than a G Wagon. Gwagon is all Status. "Look how much money I can piss away."

I will say, the high performance G wagons aren't for me, but I'd totally go for one powered by a turbo 4 cylinder diesel engine, on portal axles (4x4 squared), with a lineX finish on the body. All the luxury on the inside, and sensible rugedness on the outside. Of course I wouldn't pay more than 55 to 65k for that, so that'll never happen. 🤣

Chances of you going thru something hugely wrong if you are the sole owner the whole time from brand new to 70-80k miles is small

Actually they use them as work tools. There are quite more stripped down diesel versions of those. Like unimogs, they were designed to work, and work is what many do in Europe. From offroad machines to tow pigs. Just because in the US the 500/63 variant is major money and only used for status, doesnt mean everywhere else is

rkan2 I have been a part of the off-road community for a very long time and I can’t say I have ever seen any rigs with air or hydraulic suspension save for a couple of solid axle Jeeps with the AirRock system. They work pretty good off-road for a street rig but more of a novelty. The best off-roaders in MY opinion are the rigs that compete in King Of The Hammers every year in Johnson Valley CA. Go ahead, look it up, I will wait. Yup, I will take solid axles, coilovers, and bypass shocks for anything but high speed desert racing. Are you confusing the tricked out, airbag lifted show trucks on magazine covers for off-roaders? What are the best off-roaders in YOUR opinion?

Rob, I totally agree with the way they drive. Nothing exciting. My F-150 was in the shop and my friend loaned me his 2016 G63 while he was traveling. What I did notice is how differently people look at you. Much differently than if you drive a Range Rover.

121bham I own a Series II and a 93’ D90. My Series II is original. My ‘93 is a 5spd 200tdi that shifts smoothly. With any car, they’re only as good as you’re good to them. Can say the same for my Disco4(shown in my YT pic). 8 years of ownership- AC blower replacement, two O2 sensors, lower control arms, tires, a few light bulbs.. knock on wood, but she’s been good to me. Refer to my IG for the other two turds.

Nicest truck I’ve ever owned. Loved my Range Rover...at first. Until I started having major reliability issues. It once shut down while I was driving 65 mph on the NYS thruway....that was a fun time. Especially with my wife and 2 small children with me. Never again. Traded it in (got hammered) and never looked back. If you must scratch your Range Rover itch, lease a new one for no more than 2 years. And lease a Nissan or a Honda at the same time so you have a truck to use while your Range Rover is in the shop.

The monthly payment on my 2007 G55 AMG is 650$. I customized and updated the exterior to match the 2018 G Wagons. I can't justify why anyone would pay 650$ a day for a rental where it costs that much to own one.

I've driven both (2015 g550 & 2015 Range Rover Sport) and I agree with everything Rob was saying about the g wagons. Range Rovers are much better cars for daily use but the g wagon definitely is a more unique vehicle

I use to have the RR evoque coupe which has the dynamic suspension. It was a turbo 4 banger, AWD and that thing handled AMAZING. Looked way better than normal Evoque too. Only seen one other one, guess people don’t like not having 2 door SUV. I took it off road with low pro street tires and it creeped through the mud no problem. Was blown away. Pretty easy to work on too granted all I had to do was oil changes.

The difference between the G and Range Rover is you know everytime you turn that key in the G it starts and runs like a Swiss watch . The Rover is a bit of Russian roulette once it’s outside warranty , the reliability is woeful . Here in the UK they have a terrible reputation for reliability . The G will still be going at 1/2 million miles whereas the rangey will be scrap at around 150k . The G is also much better off road (3 axle locks for a start) and much more durable , the rangey you will have bits flying off it if you really try do some proper stuff . But it’s the depth of engineering and build quality of the G that sets it apart from virtually everything else . It’s not actually built by Mercedes but by a specialist Austrian company for Mercedes . As for on road performance , if you want a slick , great handling car just go buy a saloon from any of the major manufacturers their all pretty much the same unless you try driving the wheels off them . The G rides pretty decent for such a capable 4x4 as long as you understand your driving probably the best off road capable machine there is . All this talk of it won’t go over 110 or 120 mph is just stupid , drive like that regularly in any car, Ferrari, Porsche or anything and you’ll be banged up pretty quick so what’s the point ? I’d rather be cruising at 80 in comfort and be protected as if inside a tank .

Been driving a 2017 G63 every day for 3 months now and it’s nowhere near as bad as he makes it seem. Rough handling/floating on certain roads around 40 mph under hard acceleration and a common shakiness around 55 mph when you’re just cruising. Beyond that it’s been extremely easy and fun to live with

Because it’s a true off-road beast with design criteria that places durability and capability above driving dynamics. That’s what makes the G-Wagen legit and iconic. You can’t hold the typical buyers usage profile against the truck - which is what the guy in the video and a lot of the people in the comments are doing G-Wagens predate Kardashian fame by decades

Consider a Cayenne turbo with air suspension. I have a 2016 diesel and LOVE it! With the air suspension, it goes from a freeway cruiser to the best handling SUV you can buy making it a blast to drive. The fit and finish is superb, much better than the X5 I use to drive. The interior is very classy with ultra comfortable, body holding seats. Anyway, give it a thought.

I absolutely love the driving dynamics of mine, but they're not for everyone. I miss the body-on-frame dynamics of older cars. I also dislike air suspension and auto-leveling suspensions in general.

The G-Class is a great towing vehicle and with a good set of tires you can get a trailer out of everything with low range and 3 locking differential. Also it is smaller in size than a Range Rover and the visibility is also better due to the boxy shape, so it is easier to manouver in thight spots. THE AMG variants are nice to look at and sound good, but the Sidepipes eat ground clearance. In europe the 350d is way more common, due to higher mileage and less tax to pay. Hope they build a "professional" version of the new model soon.

I haven 't driven the new ones yet but a couple of my buddies have had the older ones in the past and they are truly terrible vehicles, usually no one keeps them more than a year and then they switch back usually to Range Rovers, which are infinitely better vehicles (even with the reliability issues). It's a tough looking poser vehicle, that's why it rents well, that's it. 🤷‍♂️

Yea, if you are buying new and are not going to keep it much longer ( or even one minute )then the warranty. then yea go with the rover, But if your going "long haul" its the G-wagon. You wont have to worry about $5- 7,000 air suspension going bad, and the host of other outrageously expensive repair costs on rovers,, The main reason the depreciate so much.

It’s a matter of perspective. If a rich person wants a hardcore and heavy duty head turner truck but wants luxury and image this is the vehicle. Very niche segment and hence the high value.
