Usually I catch people when they do this.This time they slipped one past me. Wasn't discovered until we noticed the wheel lock was missing. Oh and the wheels on the Z06 suck.

I've cracked 2 OEM wheels and warped another on my Z06. I then replaced them all with aftermarket wheels and one of those cracked. All of the cracked ones were rears, and at least one crack was probably from a pothole. It's my daily driver and I did tend to drive in track mode at least some of the time. I've stopped doing that except on the smoothest highways, and I got the suspension upgrade. I drive with tires at 30 PSI cold. The sidewalls don't provide a lot of cushioning due to the their size, and the 335 width of the rears probably doesn't help... You're twice as likely to pick up a nail as a normal car, and more likely to hit bumps and holes, too.

The screws will always (easily) re-align back if you torque it back down to the same setting - you just have to use the same screw for the same hole again which is good practice anyways. Back in the 70's, I used to work at a large auto center that sold tires, batteries, brake job, shocks, etc. One of the mechanics stole four Michelin radial tires out of the storage room without being seen. He would have gotten away with the theft but he got greedy and decided to write up a fake ticket to have the stolen tires installed on his car at the same place from where he stole them. One of the other salesmen looked at the ticket and realized that it was fake. They also had the serial numbers off of the stolen tires which were in the back seat of the mechanic's car. The police were called and the thief spent the night in jail.

The tire being older than the car is not proof of wrong doing, the tire may have not matched the other tires when installed at the factory. There is no law that says they must match. If the tire was made after the car was sold, that would be proof of a swap. This person may have simply had a flat fixed.Most tire shops remove locks to fix a flat on a regular basis.

I work at a tire shop in upstate NY. We see two to three cracked wheels a week. Stiff low profile tires and shit northeast roads are the problem. It happens especially with run flat tires. they are extremely stiff and don't take any of the impact, rather send it all to the wheel. Cars like the Corvette, bmw, Mercedes come with run flat tires with a low profile stock so they are all prone to this problem.

It's not "your car". It's the business's car. It's a cash-flowing tool owned by the business with depreciation & expense schedules & a projected residual value. At the end of the day, its only business...no personal or emotional attachment. No need to hurt someone & go to jail my friend.

The Z06 wheels are suffering from fatigue fracture. With such a large, thin cross-section, the aluminum eventually starts to crack from the repeated stresses of rolling and bumps. Since the front rims are not as wide, they do not see as much bending stress as the rear ones do, and take longer to fail.

As you said not worth the time to bother with unless it becomes more frequent. Although now with every rental return I'd have my intake person as part of their walk around also verify the DOT/serial number on each tire match your records

My friend have rental car and make "joint venture" with another rental group When they used my friend car for extra fleet for few days. They swaped the hood from glossy shiny black paint to dull paint full scratch, almost gray looking hood. my friend response was just "glad these car could back in one piece, it could be worst"

My guess is those cracks on those rims are stress fractures from either pothole impacts, or sharp bump impacts?

It is very common that a tire could predate the car. Probably not two years, but certainly several months older would not be out of line. Carmakers buy tires in batches and don't necessarily install them the day they receive them or even in the same calendar year.

100% my dad has stories about similar things. Buying vehicles swapping out parts with rentals. 99% of the time people didn't notice. As long as the car comes back without a scratch no reason to look it over to well. Till 4-5 rentals down the street it need work and then they find stuff.

I don't think it's weird that they put the tire on without telling you. I had a flat on a rental Expedition. I paid discount tire to put a new matching tire on (I didn't bother trying to find a used one) because I didn't want to get charged down time while they drag their feet putting the new tire on.

4:51 - that's just a Torx headed bolt, like allen key but better, and a standard. I think that I have almost as many torx keys as I do allen keys. They're all over all of the Fords I've owned. Apparently they don't slip as easily as allen keys, so you can have less depth to the head so it protrudes less, plus I do think that they look a bit nicer.

The cracks on the z06 rear rims are because they are to wide and there isn't enough support on the inside of the rim and that's also why you don't see it happening on the front due to there not as wide... lots of the C7 series z06's and ZR1's are having the same problem from hitting potholes .
@charleshines6155
@charleshines6155 4 жыл бұрын
The cracked wheels would probably be a big problem on any car with such low profile tires. I never had a car with low profile tires but I have heard that they are more easily damaged when you hit a pothole or anything. I live in Pennsylvania and I am often in places where the roads have potholes. These are places you do not want a car that sits very low to the ground because even some of the speed bumps in a parking lot seem like trouble for a car like that.

Those vette rims are really wide and all the support is on the outside edge, not surprising they are cracking. One of my rims cracked on my xr6 and its common but thats because its made of chinesium pot metal.

Rob, I was just curious about adventure drive and was reading around the page. There's a part in the conditions of refunds and spot transfers where there is a word missing. The phrase is "Fully transferrable up to 30 before start of trip to another Adventure Drives trip." I guess its 30 days or 30 hours? Idk, just thought I'd let you know.

I used to work at a body shop, everyone drank too much, wrecked cars constantly. They would repair our damage, repair whatever damage the customer came in with and send the car on its way without telling the owner. Shady stuff happens in the auto industry thats for sure.

Here's my (odd) comment: I enjoy these videos a whole lot, but I really shouldn't. I'm a sort of laid-back California beach bum, and normally, rich, fast-talking New York types (you know what I mean) irritate the shit out of me, but for some reason, Rob doesn't. It took the longest time for me to figure out why this is and what it boils down to is that he comes across as an honorable man - the kind of guy you would let stay at your place while you're away on vacation. The kind of guy you'd loan big money to and never lose a night of sleep over it. In my book, this trumps everything else, plus, I get to learn about an interesting business. He certainly doesn't have to make these but he chooses to do so, and for this, I am very grateful.

Rather then looking for the date of the tyre you should be able to determine it by seeing when the lock nut was moved around (ie if it was next to the Pirelli logo when it went out and then it was opposite it when it came back)

Aren't the screws on the 918 just basic torx? Also the NSX is assembled prior the paint booth so is the paint over the screw heads really designed as an indication or just a result of the manufacturing?

I take pics with my cellphone just to remember the size tire and look of the rims when I am far away and come across a meet/swap or some kind if deal and can zoom in and see all digits including DOT numbers...try it. Also, O'reilly sells an easy off for lugs that have worked quite easily on almost every car I've bought as they never have the damn key.

The wheels crack because of how low profile the tires are. Bumps are a lot worse on a wheel without the extra cushion. That, or just crap wheels. I work at discount tire, and have seen a lot of these issues.
