StezStix Fix?

I got 6 PS2 controllers, 3 PS1 controllers and 2 SNES controllers in an eBay joblot for £15. I really wanted one of the SNES ones in particular.
Let's see how many I can get working.
Hope you enjoy!

Tip: To "fix" old rubber button contacts; Use a leded pencil on the contact point on the back of the rubber button. Apply by just drawing on them as you would on a paper. They tend to loose their conductivity over the years.

Not sure if you've got this by now, but a solid method for testing PSX and PS2 pads is the PadTest homebrew software. You can easily access via freeMCboot (in fact, my first freeMCboot happened to have this preloaded). Lets you test all the buttons (including pressure sensitivity) and also the thumbsticks, their buttons and both rumble motors. Also on the topic of pressure sensitive buttons, that was probably both the most interesting technology on the Dualshock 2, but also its biggest point of vulnerability. The ribbon membranes with all the face buttons would go bad over time. The fix is usually replacement parts, but they can also be repaired if you're really clever. Source: I've fixed dozens of PS2 controllers.

From what I've found fixing PS2 controllers is to check out the revision on the back. I have plenty that have H and A, only found one with M that was from Japan. The H model for the most part, once they aren't working, it's off to the parts bin. They are the models with the soldered on flimsy PCB. The A models tend to be easier to repair. One thing you may find is the A models with the foam block that puts pressure on the flimsy PCB to make contact. Overtime or temperature, that thing can shrink. I just replace it with window seal foam cut to fit and works great. Same thing for the PS3 controllers. People often mistake the stick drift for just a loose connection on the flimsy PCB. Easy way to test, is just pinch the middle of the controller to apply more pressure.

The Glop Top (the blob chip) is a silicon die that has the circuit on it, but it's glued directly to the board instead of being encased in a full chip. There would have been tiny wires bonding each trace end to a point on the silicon die, but the die probably ripped off with the blob cap.

Oh my gosh ! The SN Pro pad. A controller I aptly named "SN poo pad". Back in my SF2 days I smashed several of these because they had a flaw where if you tried to throw a hadoken the centre of the dpad collapsed and it just didn't work. I would literally unplug it so as not to damage my console and then swing it by the cable and smash it on the stone fireplace. For years after I used to find remnants of the clear plastic stuck between the skirting and carpet LOL. Hint they're no good for fighting games.

31:20 the bit in the middle looks like the bit of copper they fixed the chip to before applying the bond wires. btw if you want to get rid of the blob without destroying the chip, there's ugliness you can do with boiling acids and the likes, or extremely accurate CNC mills to take the epoxy off in nanometer layers, but short of that it's almost impossible.

I love your channel you are very thorough I've had a couple questions. A only reason I ask is because having to run into similar things I didn't know if you had tried this. Have you ever tried copper pin stripping with conductive adhesive backing Is to make and remake traces. You can get it thicker than the normal traces And you can solder to it. Also what solder are you using? We do repairs in the shop all day and our last tin of flux died because our 5 core solder has it in it. Please don't take this as criticism I'm just asking questions because I was always talked if you have questions to ask them. You do some brilliant work Thank you for the great Content

@StezStixFix
@StezStixFix 3 жыл бұрын
@@solly2 Yea, its worth using the USB tester to see if it's drawing any current. If it is, then the board is likely OK, but you might want to try a different battery. If I remember correctly, if its drawing 0.4 amps, then it is charging. Make sure you check all the ribbon cables for corrosion too, the contacts are quite susceptible to eroding away with any amount of water on them! Good luck, let me know how you get on!
