I bought a mystery box of Vintage Sewing Patterns 😅

So, was it a huge mistake? Well, it depends on your perspective really, but I don’t think it was a mistake at all!
I had so much fun unboxing these and I was so happy with the the 40s-70s patterns that were in this job lot mystery box and might be considering buying another collection of vintage sewing patterns sometime 👀

So it turns out the “inches slimmer” pattern I was unsure about is a Marian Martin mail order pattern from the late 1960s! The more you know, huh? 😄

Back in the seventies and early eighties I used to buy sewing and knitting patterns from the forties, fifties, and sixties in charity shops. Vintage clothing used to turn up too. I had so much fun making and wearing them. Anthing remotely vintage has a much higher price tag now. I think you got a good deal. Some fun stuff there though I cannot think of the eighties as vintage at all, nor the seventies. I'd frame the cute patterns that don't have enough pieces to be useable.

I too had a case of pattern envy, mine has been cured by the last couple of months stalking through the ebay live auctions. And the vast majority of patterns from the 30's-50's are unused. the one nice thing about having just the envelope and instructions is you can see the shape of the piece. And it's makes a great reference for drafting your own. I think you could come up with the playsuit 2 piece outfit from the pictures

Thant was great fun to watch I've got 2 of those... because they were made by my mother (and me) at the time. The kaftan, she made it when I was a baby, then again, for me, when I was a late teen. The cloak, we made it together for my school ball, then I used it again, over 20 years later, to make a matchy one for husband (the same repurposed red velvel curtains). When essentials started out as a magazine, they were quite generous with the number of patterns; later, you had to send off for them.

Oh wow! I'm immediately transported back to my childhood. I was born in 1970's Sheffield, South Yorkshire so I grew up with a mum who had plenty of these vintage patterns flowing out of her sewing box. She didn't make all of our clothes as kids, but I certainly do remember wearing homemade clothes from time to time. Thank you for sharing this x

The second you pulled out the 80s lycra leotard pattern the gremlins in my brain screamed most violently "MAAAKKEE IITTTl!!" 😂😂 From what I've found maudella seem to be cut slim on the sleeve and cuff width and quite short on the waist so definitely recommend to make a mock up on these vintage patterns. I've learnt the hard way😁 definitely worth the effort in the end they come out so nice!

Hartnell's designs were worn by the Queen, her mother and her sister from the 30s through to at least the 60s. Maybe you could make the Hartnell for the forthcoming coronation?

You can try asking on Facebook groups to see if someone will share the pieces that you are missing. I've had some success with this in the past. Or just frame the envelopes if they are cute enough

What a brilliant haul, really like some of the seventies patterns; but then I was a nipper in the 70s. Would steer clear of the 80s exercise pattern, ending up in spandex and leg warmers you may end up running from Gremlins. Oh and yes I did watch the adaptation of the Lion, the White and the wardrobe. Not my favorite story in the chronicles of Narnia, I most liked 'The Horse and his Boy'.
