It looks like they only had to refurbish the controller and clean the exterior of the console. The stickers are Gamestop's internal parts ID numbers to show what was worked on. My guess would be they replaced the thumb stick caps after the original owner wore the top of them out (somehow) or the more likely option of their pet chewing them off.

I bought a pack of cheap universal rubber caps because my cat kept trying to chew on the sticks, especially the PS5 ones for some reason. Thankfully she's only around my desk when I'm in the room, so she always gets caught right away. But if she does ever manage to damage something, now it's just a cheap throwaway bit of rubber, instead of a $70 controller. Ended up putting some better KontrolFreek ones on my PS5 and Series S controllers. Nice little upgrade, and still a lot cheaper to replace than a controller.

As a former GS manager of 10 years. Anything coming from the warehouse will be refurbished. Wether it be the stores took it in as “defective” for missing components, dirty, or doesn’t work properly. The store gets the “refurb fee” credited to their bottom line on their profit report. Once it’s at the warehouse they will fix, clean, or simply put a new accessory with it and send it out as refurbished. Pre owned is when the store determines its running properly and the store boxes it up and sells it as pre owned. The warehouse will test it again when it gets there to see what the issue is. And they will then determine how far they need to refurb the system. A refurb through them can literally to be just clean the outside. I went to the “roc” (their refurbishment center, as they called it 7 years ago. Back then it was a crazy nice advanced place. But I’m sure now with all their budget cuts it’s not anywhere near what it once was

As someone who works for Game Stop as a SGA, I would 9/10 recommend a used console over a refurbished one. Just because if you trust your Game Stop Associates, they will properly clean the console and dust it out with our air blower. At the location that I work at, we are *VERY* adamant on NOT using a magic eraser due to seeing videos like this. I want to keep my reputation as a retailer and make sure my word still holds value. Unfortunately, GS does use magic erasers as the standard because they rather have the console be as clean as possible. To that, the system also does not appear to be consistent, again, I work retail store, so I do not know what our warehouse employees do, but I will give an update when I find out!

Also an SGA, can confirm. If it needs magic eraser, it needs a spray cloth after. Period. We don't like that film it leaves, but it's so good getting buffs out. If the sony stickers are already gone, I'll CLEAN it myself. If they're in tact, ill use the blower. Pre-owned all the way in my store lol

For what they charge for their "used" and "refurbished" products, they should definitely open and clean the controller. Also using a proper cleaning method is a must. These issues persist across many stores selling used and refurbished consoles.

As a current gamestop employee, there are a few reasons we take defective consoles in as trades that end up refurbished, 1. Something wrong with the console (disk drive hdmi port, etc.) 2. Console looks like it's been beaten to hell, and there's a lot of surface damage to the console. 3. The controller it that was traded in with it was defective. Now understand that when consoles are traded into us, we do not demand that people have original cables with it, just needs functioning cables, we do however demand that the controllers be wireless and not off brand meaning powerA or something like that. Also, when a console is traded into us, if the controller is defective, we have to take the whole trade as defective, even if the console is perfectly fine.

I've been binging these "refurbished console" videos for a while now and I applaud these tech reviewers for calling out companies with shady business practices (DK Oldies ehem ehem). However, I think it would make reviewers seem a lot less biased if they'd say "this is good" or "they did well here" instead of backhanded complements like "it's weirdly clean" or "this was either properly cleaned or I just got lucky" when these companies actually do a good job. Give credit where it's due, and keep sticking it to 'em when they deserve it. Cheers!

When I use to work for Gamestop I never had to use magic erasers to clean consoles or controllers... I was told to use Lysol wipes and squeeze out the soap and bleach water to wipe down the systems. Also, do you remember the Dentist using that pointy metal thing to clean your teeth? Yeah, we had that and I used that to get the hand grease and gunk out the controllers, etc. I always made sure not to send out a console to customers who purchased Used or refurbished all messed up or not cleaned. I got told to stop doing that extra stuff cause it took up too much time lol. Btw I did the basic cleaning not taking the console apart just regular cleaning

I've used magic eraser on practically every surface in my house and have never once had it scratch something... unless they suddenly added a grit to magic erasers, I'm confused how a soft spongey cleaner is scratching plastic. The numbers are to identify the person that refurbed the item. Sometimes if you were to buy like a wallet or a pair of jean you might find a little piece of paper that says inspected by so and so. Its the same idea.

These type of refurbished consoles are almost always handled by warehouse. I'm sure they have their reasons, but most of us don't really know their repair/refurbish process. I'm assuming they do this to remove any gunk from the previous owner, even if I personally think it's extreme and very unappealing

I use 91% Isopropyl alcohol and jumbo cotton balls to clean used systems and controllers. I use tooth picks to scrape out thar gunk in the seams, and clean was left of that with a cotton swab.

Glossy surfaces are a tough one. Personally, I would just lightly clean a glossy surface with a microfiber cloth if it doesn’t have many scratches. If it already has a lot of scratches, I usually wipe it down with a wet wipe and then immediately wipe with a microfiber cloth to remove any streaking. Magic eraser should really be a last resort. But this conundrum is why I prefer matte consoles over glossy

IPA and a microfiber cloth does a pretty good job. Soap & water for spot cleaning if needed. There isn't much that those 2 methods can't clean that a Magic Eraser can instead.

Magic Eraser is probably the _easiest_ product to use... Not the best for this application, but easiest - and there are plenty of cheap, generic knockoffs of Magic Eraser nowadays to satisfy the Accounting Department. Also... I doubt they're being used "properly," Magic Erasers should be used damp (they are abrasive sponges with impregnated cleaners, or in other words, a gentler S.O.S./Brillo pad), they absorb water very easily, and the water comes back out of them with the slightest pressure (GREAT IDEA AROUND VENTS AND PORTS, RIGHT?). Even if Magic Erasers WEREN'T abrasive, they shed water too easily to be safe around case openings. They weren't designed for electronic devices encased in high-gloss plastics, they were designed for countertops, stovetops, dishes, and sinks! Magic Erasers even scratch NSF-Approved plastic food storage bins when you're really bearing down on it, to get the crap your coworkers left burned-on for hours in the hot holding unit. It's fantastic at getting coffee stains out of stainless steel, so like most cleaning products, when used for its intended purposes, it's harmless and effective. It's not designed to be used on soft plastics, and there's probably a warning about the product being mildly-abrasive somewhere on the label. If not, it certainly falls under the "Not To Be Used For Unintended Purposes" type of warning most products carry for liability reasons. If you're gonna scratch everything to hell with a Magic Eraser, at least rub on a quick coat of Armor All to hide the damage! 🤣 I'm kidding. Don't intentionally damage plastics by using the wrong cleaning methods, and then sell it for top dollar. Don't be DK Oldeeznuts.

Local used electronic store had a digital for $350. After trading my PS4 towards it. Only paid $250 for it before taxes. I was lucky and it had nothing wrong with it and seemed good as new! Even so with, with the potential flaws on the outside of the console. And the possibility of an even more discount from trade-ins. This is a steal for the console from gamestop.

Pre-Owned, yes. Refurbished, no. Usually, I prefer refurbished over new because most places also typically fix any manufacturer defects in the refurbish process. GS - for now, do not get from GS. However, I will say that they are working on fixing the issue.

It can't be repaired as cost effective under warranty, thereby the gamer got a brand new replacement. I want to be very clear that I set the stick settings up in Apex to purposefully exaggerate the stick drift in the controller as much as possible. If you download Apex on your PS5 right now, and set your sticks to 5 sensitivity for hip fire and 6 for ADS, along with the linear response curve and dead zone turned off, you will likely see this much drift on even a very new controller. It is definitely not an unplayable amount of drift in most circumstances unless you specifically wanted to play with those settings. 5-6 classic in Apex even with no dead zone will not drift this bad. It's the linear response curve that draws it out. Try it for yourself.

I bought a used ps5 the first just came with brown paper sheet so things didn’t move around. The stuff raddled around for sure. But yo the console was filthy with dust and underside the white area was covered in yellow/orange probably from a smoker house. When I was setting it up the ps5 would only stay on for 5 minutes because it would get too hot. I thought it would get hot because of the area I had in. It wasn’t it was just to filthy, I called in and let them know what was going on with it they told me to bring it in and they checked if they had more in the back they did. I don’t know why they didn’t they give one from the back. They gave me the display one. The 2nd one o got front then it still came in in a normal box with a paper sheet to keep it from moving around it still did. But this ps5 is clean like it’s brand new no scratches either and I got money back too. This ps5 works like new for sure I’m happy with it.

This is why I’ll never buy any “refurbished” electronics, with the only exception being certified refurbished directly from the manufacturer. You never know what you’re getting for your money.
