I Bought a Suspicious PS5 from eBay... they DESTROYED it

This was a weird purchase... I bought this special edition spiderman "refurbished" PS5 from eBay. It was $700, which is $100 over retail for this console. This spiderman PS5 just released like a month ago, so it's pretty weird that there are already "refurbished" ones for sale... let me know what you think about this purchase!

I know there are resellers out there that buy pallets of returns then sell them for a quick buck. They usually don't even test anything and sell things as is. I think this is a possibility.

Do not worry, lad! All you need to do is deep clean inside as much as possible, then fix up anything inside the console heating up as an option even with a superfast cooling fan option.

The biggest problem is a lot of ebay sellers will sell you consoles and then ship them in practically nothing, and I hate that. They act like the postal service doesn’t toss these boxes around like they’re nothing.

Look, you better package your stuff well. 97% of the time when things are damaged it's because of poor packaging. You gotta realize packages are put in large containers and then in large dumpers to be dumped onto conveyor belts. That means sometimes larger, heavier packages will fall onto smaller, more fragile ones.

My theory is they had a PS5 that was broken so they bought themselves a Spider-Man 2 ps5, bought the plates separate and put the spare plates on the old one and sold it as a Spider-Man PS5.

They bought this ps5 limited edition. Took the face plates off the new one, and put it on their old one. Then they sold you their old one with the Spider-Man covers. They didn’t care about Spider-Man, but needed a new PS5 cuz the old one is broken. They then sold it to you for a profit. So they ended up getting a new PS5 for free essentially after selling it to you for $700.

That's a bad deal! Hopefully the seller will admit there are errors and respond pretty soon! The state of the console and the issues faced are things that should not happen with such a new console. Definitely seems like a swap job there! (Two things you could try: 1 - look at printing on the main boards to see if they are identified as being older than they should be (an older revision date, or whatever); 2 - as the console asked for a system update, look at the software version it currently has and see how much older it is). Just a thought or two.

eBay is a cesspit of scammers. Not just for consoles, but for anything. In last two months have had two people supposedly send me baseball caps that I bought. First one just never showed, asked what happened, no reply just refunded. (was obviously never posted) Second one provided tracking but on the tracking site it said the label had been generated but was never received by them. Messaged the seller, didn't reply so had to file for refund. (once again was obviously never posted). I have been on eBay for two decades, and it was never as bad as this. It's just become scammer central.

you dont even need to heat up warranty seals to remove them without ruining them, a little drop of lighter fluid on them they come right off and stay sticky after the fluid dries

So the ps5 fan will indeed spin faster if it needs to in order to cool down the console! I’ve always been under the impression that I ps5 has only 2 speeds. The idle speed at the Home Screen and one more speed a little higher when opening a game and activity gaming. You plugging in that fan and it blasting off shows the ps5 will actually ramp the fan up if need be! Mine has always been super quiet since day 1 and I’ve never had it so this! Ok, I'm curious: Is the model number of the ps5 the same as the middle of the ps5 spider-man edition. I know you said it matches the white box, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was an older model 1215A is the spider-man system it says on the sleeve

Unfortunately ebay support will remove negative feedback upon the sellers request so there is no way to avoid this type of seller. I rarely leave neg feedback but everytime I do it is later removed by ebay. This is especially true for power sellers. All they have to do is complain and ebay will remove the feedback.

I would personally try to get a partial refund since they sold you a broken console and keep it. You can use the partial refund to get the right fan for it.

i would love this console but still wouldnt pay close to even retail price let alone 700.00 i just bought a used ps5 original for 300.00 plus tax if that gives you an idea how long i wait for deals. and it had to be "like new" condition. im brainstorming how to design this version by doing some DIY at home.

I work for such a place and unfortunately the bosses don't want us to do any stress tests on consoles because of time and money. Turn on consoles, load up a game to main screen and then factory reset.

You're so right that too many sellers are selling as "refurbished" when they really mean "used". Just because you're reselling it or it simply boots up doesn't make it refurbished. Some places can be really good like I got a pocket laptop from japan that was set as used and they did everything the full works they cleaned it inside and out til it was sparkling they put new thermal paste in they put little foam squares around all the slightly loose parts they even replaced the battery too it was awesome! of course you usually get your package taken hostage from whatever carrier until you pay them the fees for the trip if you get something shipped from that far away..

For people who don’t know. The HDMI cable for PS5 doesn’t matter. I can still run 4k 60 fps or 1080p 120 fps with a standard HDMI
