I'd like to thank Dollar Shave Club for sponsoring this video about this epic rescue. Go to DollarShaveClub... to get your Ultimate Shave Starter Set for $5 . After that, the restock box ships full-sized products at regular price. Every dollar you spend at Dollar Shave Club helps support this channel and the rad content we make for you.
The day began like any other one; I checked my messages and saw several links to ramp trucks for sale. This one was different, though. I clicked through the spam and saw no ordinary truck. In fact, it wasn't even a ramp truck and yet I was still intrigued. What flashed across the screen was a 1998 Ford F800 behemoth that was stretched from a four-door crew cab to a six-door colossus! Even better, the truck reportedly only had 30,000 miles on the odometer and was powered by a Cummins 12 valve 6BT Diesel engine and seven-speed Spicer manual transmission. This was a red and white unicorn!
So David Newbern and I hatched a plan; we'd fly to Iowa, buy the truck and road trip it 900 miles back to Georgia where we'd eventually hop-up the diesel and stretch the chassis to accommodate a giant enclosed ramp bed. We made it about 150 miles before the entire plan fell apart thanks to a wounded engine.
This is part 1 of the fun. Come back to see what happens after this road trip comes to a screeching halt in the parking lot of a fireworks store in Missouri.
Thanks for watching! Support Finnegan Speed and Marine and help us keep on creating rad content by purchasing a shirt, hat, hoodie or stickers at fsmgarage.com
-Finnegan

I missed that dipstick. I figured he might have busted the oil cooler by not winterizing it(previous owner) and patched to sale. That dipstick is a major tattletale with a 12 valve. Best bet to be looking for another engine. It would be worth it to check the head out and head gasket first but they usually dont have trouble keeping the dipstick in with a bad gasket. I agree, hurt motor.

I was stuck in a motel in 1979, in Waukeshaw, Wisconsin and about 10 below zero, with a Kenworth Cabover 2-axle tractor that wouldn't start. I figured, "What the hell? I've had AAA for 15 years, I might as well give them a call." They didn't want my call. The nice lady said, " Your towing coverage doesn't include commercial vehicles. I tried to tell her, "it's a really nice truck and I left the trailer in the terminal yard so it would be really easy to hook up to." She wasn't buyin'! I spent the weekend in that little motel and it never did get above zero... but there's a restaurant called Zorba's attached to the motel (still) and they had great food so I didn't suffer too much. TV in 1979 ran out of excitement pretty quickly so it was a borrrring weekend!

I feel better after seeing this video, two days ago I picked up my 1996 F800 box truck with a 6.9 cummins from getting inspected, it passed but I was told the turbo was leaking oil and there was a risk of having a runaway engine. After getting the estimate I decided to order one online and do the work myself, the estimate $3,800 was $1,300 more that I paid for the truck a year and a half ago. I can't complain too much, it has 292,000 miles on it and still running decent. The 5.9 is absolutely no powerhouse but it will eventually get where its going, at least most of the time :(

Any engine needs to work. Without oil moving around seals dry up, corrosion from just humidity in the air happens, coolant in passages runs out of corrosion inhibitors (likely what happened here, bad coolant ate up the head gasket). Saddest thing is to see a rebuilt engine that sat for years and ends up having to be rebuilt again due to corrosion from no oil covering things inside.

I feel ya man. 20 years ago I drove cross country in a 1986 Dodge 250 Pickup. 2WD with a 318 and 2 barrel carb. It was the 2nd week of January and the engine died on I-80 just before the Welcome to Wyoming sign. No cell phone so we flagged a semi for a ride into Evanston to call a tow truck. My passenger was my then fiance, now wife of almost 20 years. We still laugh about stopping to "look at the stars" at the top of the pass.

For those who dont know, the Medium Duty series fords, Such as the F600-F800s all use a standard ford pickup cab on a heavy duty frame, the interior was exactly the same from 1980-1998, using the bullnose interior, but the doors and sheet metal was from the current production trucks. one of the stock options was a Cummins 12 valve, (Later models used a 24 valve) and a 4 speed allison on some and on the later models the 5 speed Allison 2000. I used to work for Culligan and my delivery truck was a 96 with a 12 valve, 4 speed allison, the governor is the standard 3400 rpm , they just stick a bolt on the floor to keep the pedal from traveling far enough to go over 55 or so mph. If you remove the bolt you get full pedal travel and mine maxed out at 82 mph. I want to buy a medium duty in the future

So I bet this is a former Navy truck that someone turned into a 6-door. They were auctioned off in the mid 2000's and had super low miles. My old job bought one with a flatbed on it (just a regular cab), it had less than 30K on it as well and also had a 160 hp 5.9 12V cummins backed by a 4 speed allison. It was slower than dirt especially with 12,000 lbs on the flatbed.
