Shitbox van life is easy and rewarding, if you have ready access to the enginebay which is a worry in your case.

I had an '88 Cherokee Laredo and the rear differential sounded exactly like that for years, specially on highways; it is still in use today to haul logs in the middle of nowhere and still does that sound, the engine may die way before that winning differential start doing the clacking sounds, also the chassis has started to become a bit warped but that's a history for another day (yes, they do really haul logs on it but not everyday, rust is the culprit)

Another KZbinr I follow said a while back that most suburbanites who buy a pickup truck should really have bought a minivan instead. If you get one where the seats fold down/come out, you end up with just as much if not more cargo area than a mid-size truck, with the only downside being that you can't fit tall things. But in exchange for that you get a way bigger passenger capacity, lower cargo height so it's easier to load, covered and air conditioned cargo area, slidey doors that make tight spaces easier, and usually a DVD player too!

I've got a Delica - practically the same car but 4x4. My Overdrive also didn't work and it was just a temp sensor near the thermostat that had stopped working, used to disable overdrive if the coolant is too hot (or cold?). Permanently rounding it enabled OD all the time, 2 minute fix. Pressing the OD button on the shifter should toggle an "OD OFF" light on the dash - if that's not happening might be a bad switch. Sweet car. You'll love it. If you think the fuel economy is bad now you should see the Delica's economy.

Before the main comment I just want to take a moment to appreciate the majesty of those shag-pile seat covers... Now that has been addressed, I love your new shoe box missile, The old clapped out stuff is always a hoot to drive, The seats are nice and bedded in, the steering wheel feels like a freshly shaven face and you don't have to worry at all about scratches because what are ya' gonna' do scratch the scratches lmao, I have always had beaters as daily run arounds (Being a mechanic if it goes wrong I just laugh at it and say alright mate it's time for a birthday) the freedom you get is unmatched by new cars and what's even better as long as you change the oil and filter every year without fail and only flog them like they owe you money every other weekend they last a lifetime (Until they turn to dust that is, UK is not great for salt in the winter it eats cars) I loved your idea with the padded carpeting, One tip I might add that may help you when transporting drums, Get yourself a 50 or 100 meter drum of 550 paracord cheep off the internet (The stuff is like zip ties you find uses you never thought possible) and fit some of those D shaped tie down hoops in the back of the van about a foot off the floor, Then make a couple of zig zags side to side and either corner, Make them somewhat loose you can slot the drums in the gaps and then whether they are in cases or not they won't shuffle around and scratch each other up Hope my mad idea is somewhat helpful or gives you a chuckle Thank you for the awesome videos as always I hope you and all the family (Old mate James included) Have a great rest of your day and a nice week, Be safe and Take care out there wherever you are (^=W=^)7

A mate of mine bought a new 2L 4x4 VW transporter a couple of years ago and the handling was genuinely good. Trouble is he's an electrician so thrashing it around twisty british lanes on the way to rural jobs had a tendency to leave the back half full of a soupy mixture of cable, parts, tools, lunch etc. Turns out putting all your stuff in the back and then essentially shaking it like a cocktail for an hour is a bad idea. If you had been up in my neck of the woods I could have found you an old delivery Van. A lot of companies are getting rid of their older less fuel efficient vans and for cheap. Also, is the carpet completely glued down or can you pull it up in certain sections? Because those vans have hooks and spots to hook ratchet straps and bungee cords. Or else your equipment will be slidding around in there if you ever take a hard turn and have to hit the brakes. Also, your differential might speed low on fluid they make that noise that happens that happens. The same with the transmission.
