I bought an $800 MANUAL Volvo Wagon with a BLOWN Engine

In this series I will be replacing the blown 5 cylinder engine in the manual transmission Volvo V70 I bought for $800 off Facebook Marketplace.

Love these cars. I bought my ‘05 S40 2.4i from a neighbor for $350 because it had a bad transmission seal. Replaced it over a weekend and it’s been great ever since. 196k on the original engine, too haha.

I also bought my v70 sight unseen, the best purchase i have done, the car had a hole in the exhaust and sounded like a monster, the cluster stops working sometimes (i know why and how to fix it, just havent gotten to do it.) It gives two fault codes, one to do with the exhaust, and another with the ambient air temp. sensor. Otherwise, works like a charm (*knock on wood*)

Congratulations Willem, I am so in! I went through this several years ago with my BMW 318i that had a cracked block. I found that it was similar cost to source a factory rebuilt long block from my local BMW dealer as to have my shop source a new/used block and rebuild my old engine. I reclaimed my car from the shop (towed it home with my dad’s motorhome/dolly) and dad and I pulled the old engine out and the new one in after transferring the necessary components off of the old engine. Worked out great! The dealer even gave me a 25% discount on the long block and delivered it in a crate to my house! I’m in OC, so let me know if you need another set of hands! These cars are wonderful, especially in the N/A, 5 cylinder variant. I’ve owned my share of Volvos, both N/A and turbocharged, including a V70R, most of which had manual transmissions; my favorite of the lot has easily been my 04 V70 wagon with the same N/A motor and 5 speed manual transmission as yours. Mine has 244k miles and is still going strong. Good luck on this project and I hope you have many enjoyable years with your V70 wagon!

It's impressive to be able to blow up a engine like that. They are built like tanks That motor can deliver right under 400hp without changing internals. Maintained 500 000 miles is no problem

Nice find. Just picked up a p2 xc70 project for $600 that had a split in the radiator. Really jealous of your manual find. These engines can last forever but have some issues. The o-rings for the oil pickup tube can crack and lead to starvation issues. The oil pump is located behind the crank pulley and relies on a gasket to maintain oil pressure. Also make sure that you replace the pcv system and timing belt. If you ever smell fuel at the rear of the vehicle, it's because the top of the pump likes to crack but you can clean and fill it with plastic bond epoxy. Hopefully everything works out well for you guys and great progress so far.
