The bracket on the back side of the supercharger is a coil bracket like what they used on the 1994 to 1997 thunderbird or the 1996 to 1998 mustang GT. There should be another one for the other bank of the engine. But the engine would have 2 coil packs that run 4 individual spark plug wires each. They are cheaper to replace too compared single single plug coils packs.

Hey guys, awesome find on the Cobra Mustang - I have already watched this episode and can't wait for the next one. You had asked in the video what you could use in the cylinders to "Free Up" the pistons from the rust. I have had amazing success using a product called - ( Metal Rescue ). I have literally removed all the rust in old motorcycle gas tanks with Metal Rescue. It's almost like magic how the rust is just gone in a day or two of just having it in there. As someone that currently owns a Torch Red 2003 Mustang Mach 1 this project has me beyond excited. Just one request though, please keep it a 4V 4.6. Far too many people are ditching these engines for the coyote and it’s kind of a shame. These 4.6 engines have their own unique sound that I think is amazing! Also the CD that is in the cd player is “Back for the first time” by Ludacris. It was released in 2000 so it’s definitely period correct lol. The song that starts playing is “ U got a problem” which is the first song off the album.

Terry still runs a large aftermarket speed shop just outside Cincinnati OH. This car was featured on Inside Drag Racing/ESPN back in late 2000/early 2001. Was coverage from the NMRA race in Bowling Green. I made several passes in it when it had a Tremec 5 speed in it. Ran 10.80's then at our local track. I think that switch by the shifter might be for a lock-up converter. This video brings back so many memories. Fun to watch.

So I know this car. It was brought to a Blue Oval Racing event back in 02ish? Word spread fast "Hey! That's the SC Cobra R that's making the magazine rounds!" This would have been around the time where there was a national battle of taking 4th gen modular Cobras and seeing how far you could get into the 11s with just bolt-ons. It made 2-3 passes and boom! 300ft of white smoke. They quickly packed it up and left which is understandable but everyone was kind of heartbroken as this was basically the hero car for the community at the time. It came out after the event that it kept breaking serpentines in the burn out box and the white smoke event was catastrophic and folks couldn't wait to see this car's new engine. It wasn't long after that the Terminator arrived on scene and this Cobra R faded into memory.

Try something called evapor-rust. That stuff basically removes all the rust and puts surfaces back to almost ,almost good usable metal surface. Compression button on the deck reduces the overall dynamic range of a piece of audio by detecting when it exceeds a specified level, and then attenuating it by a specified amount. Put simply, it narrows the difference between the loudest and softest parts of a track so that it's more consistent in level. Also, so glad that Alex is quickly turning into a Mustang guy. If I remember correctly, the 1999+ cars were converted from a return style fuel system to a returnless system. The tuning tech probably wasn't around back then to properly tune a returnless style system to accomodate the mods so he may have installed a 1998 and older ECU setup (or a custom DFI) and as a result also a return style fuel tank (1997). It's a pretty common thing today with people who want to put a 1996-1998 4V engine (either from a Mark 8 or a Cobra) in a 1999+ 2V or V6 car. Even after the 1993 Fox body ended, the successor cars all the way up to 2004 were basically still a fox body underneath with minor differences.

You can find this chemical at home improvement store labeled "concrete etch", or something similar. This stuff is very reactive with rust and when left in open air will dry to form a layer that is water soluble. Use proper protective equipment and do your research on this chemical. I had a very good experience with white vinegar, was able to unlock a 85 honda goldwing four cylinder, fill all the cylinders let sit for three days, flush with clean water to get loose rust out, and repeat the process at least three more times, you should see on flushing that the rust will be less and less, then gently try and turn crank small amounts both directions, this worked for me.

I'm halfway through but wanted to say we used to buy old antique cars, trucks and tractors with seized motors, free them up and turn them into running and driving antique show exhibits. Almost always we'd drive the vehicles (even slow tractors) all the way to and from the shows and we'd also often drive the cars as daily drivers for a few months and put the tractors to use plowing fields. We got machines from the 1910's, 20's, 30's, 40's, and 50's that had engines so incredibly rusted and seized that you would never believe they would free up and run without a total rebuild. I don't believe we failed to free up an engine ever. Although we did try some penetrating oils, most of the time we just used a mixture of diesel (or kerosene) and automatic transmission fluid. For the badly seized engines we would fill the cylinders to the top, reinstall the plugs or injectors (if diesel) and let them sit for a couple of months. We'd also check and top up the cylinders weekly. If they didn't free up after a couple of months, we'd continue the soaking for another couple of months. Some took more than 12 months of soaking to eventually free up. For the first 10 to 50 hours of running we'd run the engine with a lubricant (ATF, engine oil, etc) added to the fuel. One thing we quickly learned is you don't want to force an engine to free up using too much torque. If you did the engine would often quickly destroy itself and end up with no compression. On the other hand, if you waited long enough, even with the worse cases, they would not only free up but they would almost always remain in running and driving condition after lots of driving. Previously badly corroded and seized engines would almost always end up with a few cylinders with semi-poor compression. Say when new they had 160psi, they might end up with 120psi in a couple of cylinders. That's still enough to easily start and run but would be noticeablya bit down on low rpm power and torque. High rpm power often ends up really good though, especially after a few hundred hours of running. I'd say the most important detail is not what fluid you use to free it up, but to take your time and wait for the rust to fully soften/dissolve before running it.
@Slider682 жыл бұрын
To add... If you think about it, waiting for the rust to really soften up deep down makes sense. Imagine a ridge of rust in a cylinder. If you just take off the outer 75%, that remaining 25% of a ridge will get hit by the rings every time the piston passes. This will quickly destroy the piston and rings. Waiting long enough for the entire ridge of rust to soften up allows the rings to clean away the rust away instead of crashing into it. Instead of a ridge though, your left with a small rusted cavity, which explains why the compression often remains down slightly. As far as what penetrating fluid to use, we were not in a rush so, as stated above, we mainly used ATF and diesel/kerosene. I'm sure there are faster acting fluids, but the same advice of waiting for the rust to fully soften still holds true if you want the best results.

The biggest thing that always works for me is Marvel Mystery oil. I bought a 1970 Chevelle that was locked solid and dumped mystery oil down the cylinders, let it sit for a week and spun it over with the flexplate tooth by tooth. One year and 3k miles later that car runs great! And yes love the old Mach stereos. Fords factory radios typically suck but they really did the Mach and Shaker systems right.

I have a 1999 Mustang Cobra convertible and watching this is awesome cause I had many of those mustang magazines and still do. Watching you guys work on this car from 20 years ago from sitting is amazing! I'd love to buy an 03/04 Cobra next!

I have an 03 Ford Mustang GT that I bought with some slicked out chrome cobra rims that almost cost more than what i bought the car for. Almost feels dirty having them still on there five years later. Love watching your videos, especially on the 80s model mustang and learning something new about the cars ive owned since I started driving when I turned 18.

My vote is for the Evaporust as well. Had an engine that was locked up tight and completely rusted cylinder walls. Filled the cylinder to the top with the fluid and gave it a week. Came back and the motor was freed up and the rust was completely gone.

Perfect definition of Legit Street Car. I have the same mentality for my car: weekend drives + competent track car - full sleeper look, but all the relevant track suspension mods (shortly powertrain as well)

@LegitStreetCars 99, 01, and earlier 03 Cobra's had 4 thread spark plug holes. Late 03 Cobra's and all 04 Cobra's had 9 thread spark plug holes. If the heads are good, just making sure that the spark plugs are torqued in properly will make sure you don't blow the plugs out. If the heads are bad, getting replacement heads from an 04-05 Lincoln Aviator will ensure you get 9-thread heads. (look for DB or DC casting heads). If the block can't be cleaned up with a hone, the max you should bore it out is .020 over. The '99 Cobra came with a Teksid aluminum block. To get another one, you can look for a block from a 96 to early 01 Cobra (later 01 Cobra's cam with a WAP block), or a block from a Lincoln Mark VIII.

IIRC ford fixed the modular plug issues in 03. That’s why I bought an older new edge. Zero problems from the engine so far. 🐎

I have used a 50/50 mix of ATF and Acetone to remover rust. This was used on on a adjustable wrench left outside over winter. It was really encrusted and jammed solid . Isoaked in aluminium tray for a few days , it attacked the rust but not the steel of the wrench . After I cleaned it up and it was rust free. So try in one cyclinder what have you got to loose. Cool car by the way. Regards Tom in the uk

Fun fact: I pulled the engine twice already because the dealership or as I like to call them the "stealership" messed up on a simple oil and filter change. Now I'm getting all the rotating assembly with harden forged crank, piston rods, and pistons. Plus, the best main + rod bearings you can buy....

You should say that the Carly unit is subscription based . To get the decent features you need to pay an ongoing fee. I sent my one back as I didn’t feel this was clear at the point of sale.

Had a 99 then an 03. Followed this build closely on blueovalnew where beefcake posted. Later, many moved to svtperformance. Did a quick search and saw posts on what happened to car. Blown engine after a few weeks so stock engine put in and car sold. So replacement engine also had a failure... forged engine got sold with the car. Info provided by a user named Coop on SVTperformance that had looked into buying the blown engine. Coop was a top poster and excellent mechanic I learned from back in my cobra days... Anyway, a source I definitely trust.

Wanna get that cd out? Grab another cd, stick it about halfway into the slot and hit the eject button again. 32:00 and dude just get some channel locks, grab the hose past the post and twist slowly back and forth until it comes free. Takes like 30 seconds tops.

You can grab a mark viii engine and utilize the badass aluminum block they had in the 96-98 cobras. I think the 99-02 cobras we're the worst of the 4.6 cobras but you could Frankenstein a beast with what you have. I don't know if the heads and the connecting rods will still be ok, but drop those in a new block and youre ready to go!

If you are interested, there is an 18 wheeler race car trailer with a 1992 Mustang GT which was written up in all the Ford and Mustang magazines . It turned the fastest lap around Charlotte Motor Speedway during the 20th Annivrsary Celebration . The interesting thing about this car was it ran on pump gas, methanol, propane or compressed natural gas with the flip of a switch . This Mustang has been living in this race car trailer since 1995 . Also in that same trailer is a 1995 Cobra R Mustang with 12 miles on it and still wrapped in the factory plastic . There were two of them, but one was destroyed by the second owner in a crash at Watkins Glen during the IMSA Endurance Race. The car in the race car trailer was the backup car for the current owner's race team . This car never saw the track and spent most of it's life in hotel lobbies advertising the IMSA Championship Endurance series . The third car in the trailer is a Formula Firebird built by the factory Pontiac Race Team, Wheel to Wheel Racing . This car started as a body in white and was built from the ground up specifically for the IMSA Championship Endurance Series . This car actually won at Daytona in 1995 . The race car trailer has an upper level which holds 2 cars and down below is room for another car, plus the front half of the trailer is built out like a motorhome and has room to sleep 10 crewmen . There is another 18 wheeler trailer filled with an assortment of experimental parts used to by the race team and sold to the street car crowd . The owner is 70 years old and is no longer interested in building race cars or street cars . His wife passed away and he has lost all interest in that part of his life because it reminds him of all the great times he and his departed wife had traveling around the country racing . The race car trailer and the entire contents of the trailer, plus all of the experimental parts in the other trailer, can be had for a very modest sum . If you are interested please contact me and I will tell you all I know about the cars . If you will send me your contact information I will send you some pictures of the cars . Thank you for your time and attention . Sincerely, Jon B. Quick

Soak each cylinder with a 40/60 mix of muriatic acid (40) and water (60) let it sit for 1/2 hour then use a liquid vacuum pump to suck it out. Muriatic acid is a strong acid that eats rust. Do NOT use it full strength, it will start to eat into the metal too. But if used properly you can soak pretty much any rusty metal part in it and it will clean most if not all rust off. It's caustic so use proper PPE. I use it to soak rusty bolts, tools etc and have even brushed it on surface rust to help clean off panels with minimal sanding.

There was a guy in my old hood that filled a 302 with kerosene. Drained oil and filled the entier block until it was full to the cap on the valve cover and pulled the plugs and filled each cylinder to the top. Let it sit for a week with a small heater on the oil pan to heat cycle the fluid inside. It's still runs to this day but it smokes a little if he gets on it hard. It can be done just how long and how much you want to invest your time & money into it.
