My 4000 thankfully came in similar shape. No battery damage, but weak audio. Full recap brought it to 100%. That CD-ROM is out of a Packard Bell. Seems to match the color well.

You read my mind Chris. I’ve just got my A4K back from recap. Unfortunately the guy who recapped it couldn’t fix my RTC issue 😔 But also now my AmigaOS 4.1FE classic install will no longer boot and gets stuck on the Purple screen. It now appears my Mediator A4000 Di MKIII Daughterboard and the PCI slot side causes it 🤔 Yet if you plug any card for the Zorro-III side it’s fine 🤗 Great Vid! 👍🏻 Be interested to see what “Q” does with it over in his channel. 😉

Chris, make a bracket to put the sd down lower where you have access to it from the rear expansion port(remove the plate). they are easy to make from a piece of aluminum angle or you could 3d print it i guess. Nice job on the 4000, another nice machine joins the world!

This week I was continuing an A1200 recap. I was being as careful as I could with a heat gun to remove the old SMD caps. I used two layers of Kapton tape around the cap that is next to the keyboard ribbon connector. I used a flat blade screwdriver to push the edges of the tape onto the mainboard. But I still did some damage. The keyboard connector has one faulty keyboard matrix line. And the sound in computer games is distorted. Including Doom with its digital sampled sound. Amigatestkit sound test with the LPF filter is ok though. So I have buggered another Amiga mainboard. The tally is now 2 broken A500 boards and 2 A1200 boards. I have ordered a refurbished A1200 board. I can sell some other retro computer stuff to cover the replacement A1200 board.

replacement cap and a new opamp and your good to go... remove the keyboard connector if your having problems getting to that cap without damage. if you booger the keyboard connector, luckily they are only 11$ to replace

Strange thing, when I had my board recapped, (having repurposed my pc keyboard) I decided to try the original Amiga keyboard that had been sold to me as non-functioning and it worked. The connection was a bit iffy but hit it with deoxit and now I have an original working A4000 keyboard. It’s amazing how the capacitors affect so many different areas.

Great short Video! Nice technique on removing the SMD Caps although with you being a lefty it sort of blocked the 'kill shot'. I'm guessing you're cutting the cap just above the Plastic in the 1st shot and then clipping the legs at the base before removing the Plastic? -Mark.

What paint do you use? I used some naval jelly on keyboard plate of my A600 to remove a tidbit of rust and it impacted/discolored the zinc plating so I ended up sanding and painting it with a gray primer. Works but doesn't look as nice as what you have. I did try zinc paint, which looked perfect, but it easily scraped off the metal (no bonding). I also wanted to look into re-plating it and though it seems to be a pretty straightforward process not sure how professional one could make it look (have you ever looked into that?). How does your paint interact with the metal...is it pretty scratch resistant? Sorry if you had talked about it in an old video and I missed it. Your end-results look just perfect and the metal case ends up beautiful.

Why would it have at&t unix? Its an Amiga 4000, amix was for a3k and a2k machines, they even made an a3000ux that came installed with it, but it wasnt a thing for aga machines?

Can't count the boards people have twisted the caps off and ripped the traces up-was a epidemic for a while it seemed and i got really tired of repairing them. People are still doing this bad thing. Your method is much safer Chris.

yes with rom 2.x or greater, as shown in previous videos on the 357A it spins at 150rpm on high density disks and 300 rpm on DD

I've recently had good luck with soaking metal bits with rust spots in Evaporust for a day or so. No sanding and its safe on paint. Takes the rust spots back down to fresh metal.
