Bear in mind that you could always source a 96+ GM NV4500 and swap out the Bellhousing, input shaft and retainer from the Dodge and use the stock GM speed sensor setup. That way you keep your overdrive, speed sensor and you won't have to source any other adapter plate. This is exactly what I did on my swap in my 1998 K3500. It had an NV4500 from the factory. I swapped out the Dodge peices and was able to refuse everything downstream. The parking brake presents a bit of a challenge if the axle wasn't equipped with one, but I'd rather solve that problem than have to lose overdrive and still have to solve the other problems.
@WaldosWorld
@WaldosWorld 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's a good point! I just filmed the next part where I see if the Eaton fits up to the Cummins, and it does fit! Basically, I'm trading an overdrive for a parking brake. We'll see how the drivability is with a new axle ratio and maybe bigger tires 🤷‍♂️
@sacasanova
@sacasanova 4 жыл бұрын
I agree. I am going to do the same swap on my 97 C3500HD. It has a factory NV4500 with the 4.63 axle.

Keep in mind that the GM NV4500 vs the Dodge has different internals. The Dodge NV is considerably more robust and uses kevlar lined synchro rings vs brass in the GM. If you're towing heavy regularly, I wouldn't go with the GM

Thanks for great video , yes hope you get well soon , another trick with transmission lock would be mounting small disc brake on the prop flange and mounting caliper , but all looks good,, if you can get Speedo to work but not matched speed ,you can place a card or fabricate a new Speedo face your self , we went along with vehicle with good Speedo and travelled with it mark speed at say 30 50 70 should get you buy , look forward to next episode , don't forget your back !!

Thanks, Steve! That's a good tip, though luckily the GMC uses a VSS buffer that can be calibrated by adjusting jumpers on the circuit board. I'll be sure to film it when I finally get to that point!

if you could afford it maybe a gear vendors overdrive then you could keep your low rear end gear and split your shifts . You would have a 10 speed truck. Real handy when towing.

Cool, I hadn't heard about them! It doesn't look like they make an overdrive for the Eaton, but they do make one for a Muncie SM465 and that would be an awesome combo!
@roundsm18
@roundsm18 2 жыл бұрын
@@WaldosWorld Eatons overdrive was the Synchro 6. Beyond that there’s the 7 or 8 speed. That requires air though to run the splitter (and a different case entirely to fit the main and countershaft, and the whole thing gets longer because the splitter is on the back). Twin sticks aren’t that hard to run, and it’s definitely possible to run a two speed brownie behind an Eaton 5 as well as shiftable rear axles are possible as well if you want to get really intense into controlling your vehicle. You have enough fabrication experience both would probably not be hard for you to accomplish. You’re already doing quality work beyond the last four apprentices I’ve had and they came out of 4-6 years of tech school with ASEs. This project is awesome.

Absolutely! My goal is primarily to build a truck for towing and hauling. I plan to build a flatbed shortly after I get the truck running and driving. It'll really come in handy for bringing new projects home! I'd like to be able to do long trips comfortably as well. For example, it would be great to go down south or out west to buy vehicles that aren't all rusted out!

You could have bought a tail shaft housing for the nv4500 out of a early 2nd gen dodge that had the 12v because they had the speed sensor in the tail shaft housing on the earlier nv4500. Or you could have found a donor truck in a junk yard just like yours Chevy c3500 with 19.5 wheels because they came factory with the nv4500 trans aswell only difference was input shaft and bellhousing. So just say if you would Have bought your truck that you have with a manual instead of the automatic it would have had a nv4500 already in it factory.

i have been toying with idea of a diesel truck myself, but wanted to use a 13 speed fuller transmission, no plans to pull anything heavier than a car trailer loaded with a full size pickup, normally just a car occasionally, but majority would be used at a work truck, have 3 trucks, but all are 1/2 tons, want to build a 3/4 or 1 ton, and thinking of a Detroit 453 engine for power plant?
@WIDESIDE72
@WIDESIDE72 2 жыл бұрын
It’s kinda late to suggest now, but I wonder if it would be possible to use a gpa speedometer. (I am swapping an NV4500 behind a 402 BBC into a 57 Chevy 3600 NAPCO 4x4 using a bellhousing from advance adapters and have looked into that a bit. Alternately, locate a rear axle with parking/ emergency brakes and a higher (lower numerically) gear ratio.

Hey, Great video great documentation on this Trans. Its almost hard to get any info from others who swapped these in custom projects. I got a cummins 3.9 with the 5 speed fuller trans in a 69 Tbird about to be a daily after some minor adjustment. I got a question for you, how long is that lever from the clutch cross shaft from the bell housing?? and how much travel you have go on yours to release? I am running a shorter version with hydraulic, and my pedal is way to stiff. I have a video on my channel of its operation if you're curious..
@WaldosWorld
@WaldosWorld 4 жыл бұрын
Hmm, I already modified the lever in my most recent video, so I'm not sure I can give you a measurement from the bell housing. The travel at the end of the lever seems to be about a couple on inches (measuring only the travel where there's resistance). To make it easier to push the clutch pedal, you could increase the amount of leverage the pedal has, but that will also increase the amount of pedal travel
@roundsm18
@roundsm18 2 жыл бұрын
Since he hasn’t replied I’m hoping you figured it out, but the difference lies in whether or not your trans has a clutch brake. Eaton had a 5 and a Synchro 5. Fuller doesn’t have a clutch brake, but keep in mind a commercial clutch is stiffer than automotive by a long shot. If I drive a manual car I almost smash a hole in the floor board until I get used to the idea again. They make hydraulic assist kits for them to make the pedal easier. Even then, you’re looking at 15-18 lbs of pressure to get into the friction zone.
@nicholasderbin7667
@nicholasderbin7667 2 жыл бұрын
What i ended up doing was an 2" long rod to a slave cylinder. However that made it only the hulk could press the pedal down, ended up snapping the pedal. So i welded a long flat bar link the slave to 8inches from the pivot. It worked out pretty well. Is the clutch brake is that drum brake behind the transmission?

@roundsm18
@roundsm18 2 жыл бұрын
The 6.5 no, you’d have to get an adapter plate to give you the clutch housing. I would guess it’s probably possible considering they did use the 6.5 in marine and power generation so it has had some versatile stuff designed for it. The Kodiak and Top Kick had the Eaton trans as an option and NV4500 as a base but that went to a 3116 Caterpillar or 3126 Caterpillar which are the same round flywheel housing that is pictured in this video.

Look up 1997 Freightliner FL70. It will give you a hydraulic brake Freightliner chassis with hydraulic brakes which is small enough it will give you a 5.9L 12 v Cummins instead of the 8.3. It will usually have a driveline mounted parking brake. Don’t just accept any diesel one, they did use baby Caterpillar in there as well and the 3126 Cat has a different power band which gears the transmission differently.
