The length of time to charge these cars is the number one problem. Having to spend half an hour to an hour on a forecourt just isn’t going to work. We can all see the EV enthusiasts telling us all to change the settings, plan this, schedule that, but that’s not how normal people use their cars. Can you imagine an elderly lady driver doing any of that? Some of them struggle filling up with petrol. It’s too slow, too risky (charge points seem to be constantly broken or occupied) and too stressful.

The for court concept is old thinking, other than maybe on motorways. Cars spend about 90% of their lives parked, so just charge when you are parked anyway. The average car dose 25 miles a day. That is about 60 to 80 minutes charge a day on the new 5kw lamppost chargers being installed in London. At the rate of about 25 a week. So basically one overnight charge will take any current EV from 20% to 80% charge, or about 250 Miles in 8 to 10 hours. you don't have to sit and watch it charge just get on with working/sleeping while it charges. Im a mobile detailer. My current van is a 20 year old 450,000mile Vauxhall combo diesel. Even loaded I get 50mpg, 600+ miles per 5 min fill up. I paid £1500 for it, 13 years ago! I hired a Nissan EV van for a month. I gave the thing back after 2 weeks because I was having to cancel appointments and loosing money. I cannot charge at home even if I bought one. So I'd be reliant on public charging. The EV van allegedly had a 200 mile range. On a typical day. I drive 150miles per day. Except. Once I'd loaded the van for work inc the water tank. I was getting 50 miles from a charge. I had to charge the thing 3 times per day! Thats around 4 hours wasted per day!. My good day went like this: Take missus to work. She comes home on the bus. Charge the van... Yawn. Do 1st job... Charge the van. Do 2nd job Charge the van so its ready for taking the missus to work. What usually happened was: Take missus to work. She comes home on the bus. Charge the van... Yawn. Do 1st job... Drive to the charge point, wait in a 3 deep que and eventually charge the van. Cancel 2nd job because of the charging issue. Charge the van so its ready for taking the missus to work. If we did any socialising, shopping etc... I'd need to visit the charger again before turning in for the night or we wouldnt have enough juice to take the missus to work in the morning. Charging the van isnt just the time charging the thing. Theres the time to drive to the charge point (not many around here). Waiting for a charger to be available if someone is already there. I have been 5 deep in a que. I really despair for the future. They are not good enough. The range is too short and the charge time too long. public charging facilities are sketchy at best. I live in a city of 320,000 people. My nearest public charge point is 8 miles away, there is just 2 points. The next charge points are across the city some 15 miles away. I hate card payments. I have lost so many credit cards... I leave it at home, Im not good with cards.. I can buy diesel with cash... I like cash, I know where I am with cash. The local bus company has some electric buses... They are always freezing cold and the drivers are not allowed to turn on the heaters on because it kills the range, the buses are constantly getting delayed or cancelled because of them needing charging.

Hi I live in a street with 200 terraced houses, none of which have off road parking so each house would have to trail a cable across the pavement into their vehicle that's as long as you can park near your house which in my case is not very often so I could never buy one. I would say that a least 80 to 85% of households in the uk have the same problem.

I would have an EV in a heartbeat, based upon my needs and circumstances. I have a private drive, am fitting a 6.75KW solar PV system, do mainly short journeys with an occasional trip over 100 miles for visits to family or holiday. If only the manufacturers had actually made a car that suited my use. After more than a decade of EV building, there is not a single large estate EV. SUVs are not the answer to everyone's needs - if I want to move my mower, I don't want to have to lift it to waist height, or use a ladder to put fence panels on roof rails. Also, as I never buy new cars, they would need to have been making them five years ago for me to afford one now. We also have two other cars in the household - a small roadster and a four-seat convertible - and there are no viable EV replacements for those either. The people stopping me from buying an EV are the people making EVs.

They could not accept a low wage earning family, did not have £8-10000 to spend on a used EV, I said there is a lot of people that struggle to buy an old £1000 runabout, one response, they should not have cars then! complete bunch of nutters.

I have a Tesla model 3 and regularly travel several hundred miles to visit customers. I have never had a problem charging it. Also it does take a slight change of mindset because you don’t go places to charge the car. You charge it while you do other things. After a few hours I’m ready to stop for a break so I pick a location with a super charger. This means my coffee and rest break is ample to recharge the car ready to travel the next few hours. Also taking a little time to pick hotels with ev chargers so it’s then charged over night. It might be because the Tesla infrastructure is so much better than any other model but hasn’t been an issue for me so far. My usual range is about 290 miles when I charge it for a trip. My usual daily commute (well pre covid as I work from home more now) is 140 miles round trip and during the summer when the m5 is a car park it can take me 3 plus hours to get home so having adequate range was a priority for me when choosing a car.

Auto Express tested an electric car and compared it with its petrol and diesel equivalents. They compared all of the expenses and showed the cost of fuel/charge per 10,000 miles. Two charging costs for the electric car were shown as 17p/KW for home only charging and 48p/KW for public only charging. The insurance cost for the electric car was much higher than the ICE cars, so if you only compared the total cost of Fuel/Charge, insurance and road tax, the electric car actually costs more to run. Even using just home charging, was the EV just very slightly cheaper to run. So if you consider that the EV will cost £10,000 more to purchase and after 10 years, it may need a new £6,000 battery, the EV is NOT an economical proposition. Then consider the stress of range anxiety and trying to find a public charger that is available when you need to charge it and its a big NO NO for an EV. Guy Martin (the Speed King) tested the Hyundai Ionic 5 over a long distance and advised that an EV should only be considered, if you can charge at home and only drive locally. He said that a third of the public chargers were out of action and some charged as much as 70p/KW. Although he left home with a full charge, his cost at public chargers was £240, so he said that fuel for the same mileage in his diesel car would only have cost £204, proving that an EV can be more expensive to run for people who cannot charge at home.
@patdbean
@patdbean 2 жыл бұрын
Why were they paying 17p per kWh? when economy 7 is between 5 and 8p per kWh and on a 7kw home charger in the economy 7 hours you can charge about 200 miles a night for between 2 and 3 pounds .

Take a typical London suburban street. Never mind the fact that almost no house has a driveway on which you can recharge your car. You are lucky if you can park your car within 100 yards of your own house when you get home. On the occasions when my neighbour does manage to bag a spot outside his house he's afraid to move the car because he knows there won't be anywhere for him to park when he gets home. Sorry but the infrastructure just isn't there and I can't begin to see how it can ever be.

The 85% of EV owners are probably the early adopters with the income or retirement income to afford one, the nice house with space for a home charging point and a lifestyle which fits. For the vast bulk of remaining average motorists, on the average low salary... on average spend £3000 to £7000 on the purchase of vehicle. The cost and availability of similar used EVs will take some time, the new price is way to high. EVs appear cheap to run a the moment but wait until the government start to panic at the loss of fuel tax and vehicle tax... They will soon be on everyone's back taxing cars on the size of the electric motor and those who have home charging... The London congestion charge is a cash cow for the government and they won't want to see that diminish in any way. It won't be long my friend.

Sorry to hear your bad experience. I’ve owned a Tesla for 5 years and never had problems with charging, thanks to the supercharger network. Supercharger stops are only 20-30 minutes. I’ve done several thousand mile road trips with no issues. I installed a 240v outlet at my house - just like a washer/dryer outlet. It charges up fully as I sleep. So convenient! Cost of electricity is less than half of gas, per mile. It’s a bit of a pain right now for apartment dwellers who have no charging outlet. But it won’t be long before EV charging hookups are everywhere - workplace, grocery store, movie theaters, street side, parking lots. You won’t care how fast your car charges if you’re off doing your business. Cost of EVs is coming down incredibly fast. They will be cheaper than gas cars in a few years. Much less maintenance and cheaper fueling. The days of the internal combustion engine are numbered ✌️

A very well balanced critique, Lee. I live in a terraced house with no off road parking, so charging at home would be totally impractical. Plus the cost of one would, atm, be a beyond my budget, so I'm staying petrol for now. As for the future, if the real cost doesn't come down dramatically before petrol/diesels are banned, then I fear it's the end of the road for mass car ownership, something that today's public transport network is largely ill equipped to cope with (and I say that as a bus driver!)

I travel long distance in my Tesla all the time and it’s a dream! Their charging infrastructure is extensive and plus version 3 chargers are super fast. Plus the autopilot is awesome. I literally only stop for about 15-20 min every couple of hours. Which is fine cause I got to go to the restroom and get some coffee or something to eat. Try doing a long road trip with a Tesla. You will notice a big difference. (Sorry wrote this before finishing the video. Glad you mentioned how much better it is if there is a more extensive charging network like Tesla has.) However, for anyone with the ability to charge at home (I know this isn't everyone) and who rarely drive more than around 250 miles in a day (most people) then an EV could work perfectly. If you can't charge at home that's a big issue with the current infrastructure, it will improve over time of course. For anyone who does need to occasionally drive more than 250 miles a day then the Tesla is the viable option. If someone needs to drive more than 250 miles almost every day then EVs (as they are now) would become a frustration of course. Replacing 1 classic petrol pump requires at least 20 x150 Kwh chargers if you want the same Km/hr pumping/charging. This creates a space problem at the stations and will create unsupportable electricity peaks.

Probably a lie from fossil fuel PR. Travelling long distances in a Tesla is easy. Stop infrequently, every few hours, splash & dash/toilet/coffee 15-20 minutes (plug in in seconds, leave car while stretch legs etc). Rest of time, car always full (home charger), defrosted when needed. Absolute joy to drive

Some people must have been conned into buying an electric car by Ionity, who suddenly quintupled the price of a charge at the start of 2020. Can you imagine a petrol station suddenly quintupling its prices? Could you imagine being able to fill up only if you were driving the right make of car, or having to have different charge cards for every oil company? Regularly pulling in to find pumps out of order and you being expected to phone the manufacturer and report it before anything is done. We need more of your sort of reporting. So many other reviewers are enthusiastic sheep, unwilling to call out execrable service. The British government were incompetent at the start in their efforts to encourage electric take up, unless you were based in London, or with a relatively short commute there. The money given in discounts to buy should have been used to finance generally available infrastructure. I'm no great fan, but Elon Musk did the right and honest thing, investing in first -class infrastructure along with selling cars.

I tend to agree with you somewhat Lee . As I’ve mentioned a few times we have the etron and based on the current situation they’re hard work for long journeys . But , saying they’re not for the future based on today’s situation is a bit misleading. Battery tech will inevitably get better meaning longer ranges and charging will get quicker imo . I don’t believe we will totally rely on electric vehicles though . I’m sure they’ll develop something else for cars like they are for JCBs etc - hydrogen .

First of all did watch the video when it was released but haven’t had time to do my reply. Nice to see someone of very similar opinions and views regarding electric vehicles. My opinion unless they can making charging a electric car as quick as putting fuel in or having easy changeable battery that you could nip to a electric station and switch for a charge one electric vehicles I don’t it see working. Think hybrid is much more of a realistic option round town or stuck in traffic use electric motor then on country roads, dual carriageway and motorways use fuel. Problems with electric vehicles charging times, not currently enough charging points, unlike fuel the process isn’t finish within minutes so services, supermarket car parks, shopping centre would require so many charging points if most vehicles were electric which is a costing issue for them to be installed if more charging stations aren’t added be queues waiting to charge or a carpark full cars that can’t be moved because they are out of charge also electric car parking spaces require additional space than regular spaces due to charger sticking out which will reduce car parking spaces massively. Most households have more than one vehicle with probably one car on drive and one on road what happens if both need charging you can’t have charging cables running along footpaths because it’s dangerous, what about flats or terrace houses where you are very lucky to get parked outside your own house so be charging cables that are metres long to reach, crossing over each other I live in a terraced house and on the next street one house have a Renault Zoe and have a noticed outside asking people not to park outside there house so they can charge there car. Doesn’t seem very practical or cost effective in my view. That was highlighted in your videos on the Scotland trip for you travelling around doing your videos which is your job for longer distances electric vehicle isn’t ideal planning your route, charging cost were ridiculous could use traditional fuel and get more mileage if it did become cheaper still time added to journey then any saved money will be spent on food or drinks stopping all the time. It’s a well known fact our lives are busier than ever, need ways to save time and money this is adding time we don’t have. My belief is we have one life and I don’t want to spend half my life waiting for my car to charge. How eco friendly is it to manufacture batteries for electric vehicle and how eco friendly is it to recycle the batteries one they have reached out of there life. What about manufacturing process/ materials use to make vehicle not as environmentally friendly as you probably think. Batteries don’t last as long in colder situations so colder countries will have reduced range, meaning more charge, higher cost, likely need batteries replacing sooner same with hotter countries that would have AC on which drains battery the above issues apply.

Hey Lee! I just couldn’t handle the hassle you get with an electric car. The expense of getting a charger at home, finding charging points, worrying about the charge and what is being used on the car which takes up the battery etc. if I had to switch I’d rather have a hybrid for that extra reassurance just in case for long trips away. I went to Costco this morning to fill up my 1.6 diesel PUG. Cost me £52. It wasn’t empty just under half full. That’s the only thing about having a diesel. The expense to fill up these days. But I find it’s worth it. My car had dome 310 miles since I last filled it up the week before Christmas. I can’t get over the range my diesel can do. The hassle is not there for when I go away next weekend on any travels I make

Mind you, I don’t want more ev's on the road, my ev costs me about 1.3p/mile in electricity (I have a home charger on a 5p/kWh tariff), my road tax is zero and driving on one pedal is so good. You petrol heads stay as you are, continue to pay the taxes required by HMG and I’ll keep going until the government start taxing ev's.

The non-Tesla charging network is very poor. And you’ve picked an EV with a really poor range for its battery size. If you want an EV right now get a Tesla. We do regular long trips and it’s absolutely fine. We drive 3 to 4 hours then stop for about 25 minutes. London to Liverpool for example needs a shorter stop than that. Oh, and a large proportion of UK energy comes from renewables, almost zero from coal. And I don’t think lithium is mined by children, think that’s a misunderstanding. The charging network will improve over the next few years - people say moronic things like if everyone switched to EV now there would t be enough chargers. No shit Sherlock! But the power and reliability of chargers does need fixing. The number is increasing in line with EV sales.

4 hours driving in a Tesla really do you go 55 Mph in the summer or something with no passengers or what. When Tesla open up the charging network to everyone in the UK you will have bigger problems. @Advanced Driving a motorway service charger should be 150kw+ in other words should charge at about 500 miles an hour, so you should be able to put 250 miles back in within 30 minutes , 250 miles is over 3 hours of driving. You should be taking a 30 minute break after that amount of time behind the wheel anyway.

You asked what range Tesla's get, I and other owners could answer this, but I think the best idea would be for you to rent or borrow one. If you want Taycan-level then you are looking at something like a Model S performance (Plaid not available in UK last time I checked). If you want something more pedestrian, look at a long-range Model 3 or Model Y to borrow/rent. I'm struggling to see the benefit. You get under 250 miles and it costs you 35 quid for about a 70% fill up? And electric cars have a massive premium on top when you're buying them. If you're only doing local running around and can charge from home, why do you need an expensive car... And if you're going on a long road trip, it's still not cheap and takes longer with charging times. The girlfriend gets her Peugeot 2008 electric car delivered tomorrow, she does around 12k a year but that's local (kids to school etc) and hers is on salary sacrifice... So not too bad. I do 6 mile round trips to the gym, occasional 90 mile round trip to the office and nipping to the shops. For her, might be cost effective. For me, I'm doing that little my oil burning X5 doesn't cost that much in fuel. But electric is no way the way forward for everybody whilst they're so expensive

Other reasons not to buy an EV include. They cost at least 50% more than their ICE equivalent. The batteries will have to be potentially replaced within 10 years, which will destroy any residual value. When any new battery technology comes along, then nobody will want to buy the older EV cars, which will kill the residual value. Servicing of electric vehicles can only be done by specialists, who are few and far between. If you run out of charge, you can't get a can of fuel out of the boot. My Kia cost £11k, is zero road tax, does a genuine 64 mpg combined (i log mileage and fuel used) and has a range of 560+ miles per tank. EV, no thanks.
@MrTytalus
@MrTytalus 2 жыл бұрын
Some partially wrong and some partially right points there. - I looked at ICE equivalents for EVs, and found that many were getting, or were at, the same sale point, with some about 10% more. Mid last year, the TDI Golf spec was about the same as the ID.3 EV spec, and they were within £200 new (before any grants). The same with other similar models. And with Petrol/Diesel going nowhere in price, but EVs continuing to get cheaper... - The batteries in my Prius were supposed to die in 4 years... 14 years later, it was sold and still passed the battery tests. EVs are proving to have similar ranges, with the odd exception (such as the very early Leafs). And again, they are getting better and managed better. - If a new amazing battery technology comes along then maybe residual will kill older EVs, like Diesel is dead today. - For servicing there are 2 main points: There are the main stealers and HEVRA EV certified independents everywhere I've been asked to look, but not everywhere. And what servicing... ;) - Your Kia was 2nd hand? My 2015 Leaf was £9k (from a Nissan Stealer), is zero tax and costs 1.4p/mile to run in the winter and 0p/mile to run in the summer. That will change with p/mile taxes that are likely to land to replace fuel and road duties, but while the sun shines :) But in the meantime, the main point made in this video is that, EVs are not yet for everyone due to the infrastructure needing to get up to speed with this change. It will, it did with Petrol and Diesel.
