The AU was a good solid buy, the V6/V8 Commo were probably the only other cars that are reliable and easy to get running. $8K for that Raptor seems like a steal considering what parts could be salvaged off it.

The Blue Merc W126 would be on my buy list as I work with them every day and things like seat switchs are damn hard to locate today , and a running engine is bonus. They WILL break a timing chain tensioner rail which stops the left hand cam rotating with obvious results.

@ I actually missed the auction and bought it off the bloke who won the auction about 10 minutes later, yes the car was previously side mount charged running 600Hp, had a built diff, box, and so on and all my custom interior which all was ripped out before they had taken the car due to “evidence” in a court case

Yer, I had an AU XR8 back in the 00s. It was a great car . I firmly believed the standard AU Falcon was whacked extra hard with the ugly stick, but the XR's had the look they all should have had. I still miss that beast

$1,000 for any running vehicle is a bargain these days. I grew up in an era when we bought old Holdens and Fords like that for $50, and mint condition Valiants for $100, some even had rego. Sadly, that $100 has turned into $1,000 for anything that has the potential to be registered again. So $800 is a relative bargain. lol

I used to buy cars at auction for ridiculously cheap prices, with rego. Bought a Hyundai Excel once for $109 with 3 months rego, and this was less than 10 years ago. I still have it because it is the cheapest, most reliable car I've ever owned. Haven't driven it in years, but I refuse to give it up. Now the auction fees alone are $400+ before you've even placed a bid.

The AU should do you ok, course the funniest thing about these I remember was the divergence of owners. You either had 70 year old pensioners or 20 year old mad men in them with not a lot in between Go the tissue-box spec with some nasty seat covers an louvers for the rear windscreen
