Here we have the introduction to my latest project, a 1987 superbike that was abandoned for 16 years and the last 8 of those it spent outside!
It needs a lot, including the tank restoring, carbs cleaning, service, brake and clutch overhaul etc etc etc
Check out my barn find GPZ900R restoration:
• I bought a barn find 1...

Hi Ash. Just been watching on KZbin ‘Superbike Surgery’ today. Great knowledgeable chap. His video was to fix a bike that was with a dealer for 8months. He’s great at everything, his carb cleaning is 5*s. The reason for my message is on your new project bike, your tachometer is stuck at 6k. Superbike Surgery advised ‘it’s showing the 6k on the tach because the tank is disconnected!’ Best regards Hog

Love the new project, resembles my 1993 CBR600F2 acquired as a non running barn find, stood 10 years sight unseen ebay, best part was it coming to life electrics working, carbs cleaned fresh fuel started straight away 😀 currently now stripped to bare frame ready for paint, rebuild continues 👍🏻 Looking forward to seeing and hearing the FZR firing up, good project all there 👍🏻

Try a little wet sanding with a 1500 grit and see what's under there. I bought a 94 Suzuki with a crappy attempt at flat black and I was just going to sand down the runs to get it smooth and found a really trick camelion pant underneath. @AshRowland There's a good chance it had been down the road, prompting the previous owner to do a full respray BUT that doesn't mean the old paint isn't rescuable. (Double negative is always a positive😊). Depends how you get on de-rusting that tank, in some ways, because it ought to be easiest to sand that back compared to the plastics. There is no point trying until you know it'll hold fuel. The fact that it is currently holding old fuel is a really good sign. That would be high on my list of priorities. And potentially rewarding too.
@AshRowland
@AshRowland 3 күн бұрын
@@leon0 Yup, I'll give it a shot next week... yes it is holding fuel, and I actually tipped it upside down and none came out, but I reckon the rust might be currently blocking holes and once removed it might start to leak... watch this space lol

I was kind of in the same phase last year, considering any of these three models you mentioned. Thought the Honda was too fat, I did go and see a FZR1000 but did not get it as it was repainted in lime green and the owner did not allow me to do a test ride. So I ended up with a '92 GSX-R 1100. And I also have a GPz900r, it runs but needs a lot of work. Are you sure that battery charger is safe enough (stabilized voltage) to power the bike directly from it? Switchgear is metal. Fairly easy to strip them down , clean out and repaint Those engines are pretty tough. The oil light is an oil level light. But comes on when you press the starter button as a bulb check. You can strip the ignition switch down fairly easily The airbox rubbers will be hard, and a nightmare to get back on. You might be able to rescue them with an ethanol / winter green oil mix The brakes seized up quickly even when new!

Ash, if the fuel tank has not been lined previously, then may I suggest a fuel tank cleaning method that I have used with great success. Step 1: Drain and dry fuel tank with compressed air gun, fuel tap removed , and get as much of the filth out as possible. Step 2: re mount the tap and filler cap. Put a fair amount of acetone in the tank and slosh it around thoroughly for 5 minutes or so. Remove tap and filler cap drain acetone and repeat thoroughly blowing out the tank with air gun. Do this OUTSIDE as the clouds of rust will be colossal! Step three: Install fuel tap once more, making sure it is liquid tight. Place fuel tank so that it can be filled to the brim with Evaporust. Let the Evaporust sit in the tank for 2 days or more. Step 4: drain the Evaporust back into its container (it's good for multiple uses), then thoroughly rinse the tank out with water. Immediately blow as dry as possible with air gun and finally insert a hair dryer in filler opening and leave running for several minutes. The tank will look like new inside. The Evaporust is safe to use and will not damage parts or even burn skin. It's also completely non-toxic. Cheers!

I really don't know why they stopped fitting kickstarts & centre stands onto motorcycles.
@AshRowland
@AshRowland 4 күн бұрын
I guess the centre stand isn't exactly sporty, and maybe the kick start is either to do with showing off technology with the electric start, or maybe the high powered engines would kick back too much? Dunno, you've got a point though 🤔
@ANationalAcrobat-qj2dl
@ANationalAcrobat-qj2dl 4 күн бұрын
@@AshRowland The lack of a centre stand makes an otherwise simple task like oiling & adjusting the chain an absolute pain in the @r5e. If you ever had to remove the rear wheel for whatever reason that is an even bigger pain in the @r5e without a centre stand. It's ridiculous. I had to give up motorcycles about 30 years ago for health reasons but my last bike was a 1978 Mk.1 Kawasaki Z1000. The electric start on that bike didn't even work because I never used it - I loved the ritual of kick starting my bike & she kicked over no problem & started first kick every time. People are just plain lazy. I understand there are now motorcycles with automatic transmission. Good grief. 😕

I have literally just sold my fzr1000, an 89 exup, it was also painted yellow (why?) Did it white and red, got it looking like new and got £3200 for it and I spent about 1600 all in, the bike was 750 and I put about 800 into it in paint, tyres chain levers new seat vinyl..... OK it's a long list but ot was worth it. The big benefit of mine was that it sort of ran when I got it, as in spluttered and popped but a carb rebuild and new coils and plugs got it running nicely. So there's my fzr story. The funny thing is I was looking for a 600 and ended up with a 1000. Impulsive idiot 😂

Do NOT start this engine on ether. It is bonedry and because of the ether it will score the cilinders. Lube every cilinder first. You can attach a fuel bottle with two stroke mix. But first take off all covers. Then take apart all electrical connectors. Clean them. Then reattach. Clean the carburretors. Take them fully apart. Boil the chain in chainfat. Scrub it till it shines again. Do so with all surfaces. Take out the wheels. Take out the bearings. Replace or repack them with grease. Take off the cable attached to the rev counter and miles or km's clock. If their analog, lube both cables with grease. Change the oil of the engine block. Put in a new filter in the engine and in the airbox. New brake pads new tyres. Check the sparkplug wires. Measure the coil. Check all the electrical wire. This FZR1000 is an animal. And a classic. 145 hp. Second hand parts should be plentyful.
