I bought a mk1 octavia after watching your video around 5/6 years ago. 1.9 tdi with an ASV engine (pre PD ere with mechanical fuel pump). She had 87,500 miles on her with one keeper when I purchased from a used car dealer. I am now the second owner and now has 165,800 miles. The front brake pads were new when I purchased. I only just replaced them last week as they had worn out. It's never let me down. Only ever required service parts and wearable items like tires and brakes. It had a split in a coolant hose a few years ago which I replaced. That is the only fault it's had in my ownership. I have fitted 4 new class winning Dunlop tyres, which have plenty of grip and road feel. Due to my job, I get to drive and experience a lot of cars. My 2003 octavia is more fun to drive than almost all the other vehicles I have driven. Great road feel, compliment suspension, and I can just throw it around any corner without much care. No, it's not the fastest, or the most desirable car. But it is the BEST car I have ever owned, and I have owned a lot of cars.

Hi Alex the water ingress will be blocked drainage holes in the scuttle panel which fills up then goes over the pollen filter into the n/s/f footwell then buggers up the control unit under the seat it controls windows, central locking, alarm, etc,if you're lucky enough you can pop the cover off then with electrical contact cleaner and a small paint brush give it a good clean the same with the terminals in the connector plug.while doing this leave the car running with the blower on full onto the carpet youre need to remove the pollen filter plastic housing should be held down with a couple of plastic 10mm nuts it should also be held down with sealent but that's probably disappeared by now, get nice and clean and dry and re seal it with any type of water proof sealent, you use to be able to buy a new pollen filter housing from TPS not sure if you can now, I've nearly finished when putting the control unit back in the car wrap it in a plastic bag,if you unit is unrepearible find a eBay unit with the same numbers will be fine no coding is needed New they use to be £450-£500 I know I've gone on a bit but i hope this helps you or someone else.keep up the good work loving the channel's merrry Xmas 🎄 to all of the autoalex crew

Hey Alex! High mileage Mike gave me the trust to buy my Skoda superb. With 200,000 miles on the clock two years ago. It now has 224,000 miles! Still going strong. I've taken it on a 600 mile round trip a few months ago. Returning 60mpg on the motorway. I plan to keep it for as long as I can. I've serviced it a few times, done the cam belt etc. it's a great high spec car for £2k! 2013 model with all the best features for the year.

Ah it's good to see Miles back! Such a legend of a car! Also, it's actually nice to hear Alex mention Car Throttle too! I know that sounds weird, but I've seen a few KZbinrs in recent years who have left a channel for.....less than harmonious reasons, then start up their own channel doing....basically the same thing, only to then NEVER MENTION _the 'other' channel_ again, as if it never even existed, or as if they've got some kind of super injunction where they're legally not allowed to even say the words included in the old channels name or something. It's just good to know that Alex left Car Throttle under good circumstances, and even still works for the channel and teams up with the guys from it sometimes.It's refreshing to see!

Great video, glad to see miles back. You and ethan combined inspired me to buy my very own shitbox, which funnily enough, is a mk1 skoda octavia estate with a mere 163k miles, but its given me a chance to work on my own car, replacing the clutch and dual mass flywheel, servicing, and replacing the god awful standard front seats that was like sitting on a church bench. Hopefully one day you could arrange a massive mk1 skoda octavia meet because wow I'd be there in a flash. Keep up the good work!

My shitbox was a 51 plate Vectra B. Crash damge NSF (before i got it) so the tracking was off, leaking PAS, leaking rear main, leaking driveshaft seals, intermittently working brake booster, unfindable coolant leak. I got the car with a snapped timing belt, had the kit from another job gone south, slapped it on with a water pump, got another 200k miles and 4 years out of it. It just wouldnt die. I ended up getting 5 grand towards a new car in scrappage, so for a few quid getting it going and some tyres it did me pretty damn good.

I currently have a 2006 passat with 150k it isn't high mileage by anymeans but it does need a windscreen, couple of modules, turbo and bad 5th gear. I do plan to get it fixed as I don't want to part with it. My wife on the other hand is all about newer cars. Only covering 23k in her nissan since it was new in 2018. My Shitbox is currently on 206k, I bought it on 105k as an ex police car (Cambs Police is the only other owner). It's had 1 full service, also filled with oil because it ran out, been all over the UK, 2 cambelt changes, one full set of brakes, new fron arms, one clutch, 2 alternators and a set of cheap coilovers and allot wheels. It now needs another alternator so I may treat it to a new one rather than used. Also needs new sills, bit of rust to sort on the rear subframe, CV boot and it'll likely go one for another 200k. I've owned it for 10 years and hoping to convert it for weekends away as a micro camper, it'll get some new chunky tyres and maybe a slight suspension raise too.👌🏼 Just need to obtain some funds to get the work done! It is a 2006 Skoda Octavia PD105 (BKE Engine too!).

My dad drove a 1997 1.9D for quite a few years and miles. Always perfect mechanically, drove like a dream, only issues were the insanely low clearance in the front (basically you can't get these up on a sidewalk or something, ever) and the fragile Volkswagen plastic tabs that hold the electric windows up - people slamming the door will cause the windows to drop, he's had pretty much all of them break at least once.

Old cars are great. My dad's car is 20 years old and still going (a Volkswagen Jetta, manual transmission and diesel) only real problem is sometimes it throws foam at you when you turn the fan on but otherwise is basically fine. Some rust as well. And if you rev it too high you lose all the power till you turn it off and on again (so sometimes I have to turn it off and on again while I'm driving, though it's pretty rare; not a huge issue in any case).

Not the same one but I must say it is a trip down memory lane for me too. Absolutely love these cars. Impressed how good they still drive after 20 years. Really well build cars. My old Octavia, which I sold to the cousin of a friend, still drives and has 500.000 km on the clock. My new ‘old’ Octavia only has 257.500 km. So in fact it’s still a baby. Never should have sold my old one, but very happy with the one I own today. I’ll keep this one forever. Could be a future classic. The design is still very good for a car designed/developed back in 1996 and they keep on going for very low costs. Mine is a daily driver like Miles. Still a safe and comfortable car with ABS/ASR, 4 airbags, climatecontrol, heated leather seats etc. And everything still works. Best shitboxes ever! Greetings from the Netherlands. You’re spot on about new cars Alex. One of my university lecturers is big into climate change and is part of a European group who are trying to reduce pollution in the sea, and even he will tell you that these new cars, particularly electric, are a total farce. When you factor in production, shipping, life span, lithium mining, pollution produced by those processes and the cars themselves, it’s far more environmentally friendly to maintain and prolong the life of an older vehicle.

@@vladmorcan yeah I agree but they’re missing Alex but at the same time it’s a lot calmer without Alex and I think Ethan and jack are in their prime since Alex was massive clown (which I like) but it seem to piss them off some like in the behind the scenes of NC500 video on CT extra channel. Edwin is really cool and is good replacement for Alex since he was already in the background. Honestly Ethan should stay at CT but do more videos with Alex. But that’s the higher up management who was pissed off by Alex leaving and don’t want Alex. He did say that he’s still on backlist of CT and he’s still with friends with the CT crew but due the management hating him now he doesn’t get any requests. For me both Car Throttle and Auto Alex are good and make good content but I do wish for more collabs and crossovers.

You should do a special KZbin collaboration to get Miles to 500.000 miles. You lend it to other car/UK youtubers and subscribers and give them 1 rule, do 1000 miles in 1 week and then give it back. And they can make a video out of it. Do that untill Miles makes it to 500.000 miles. You can document all the places and adventures Miles went on in a special 500k video.

I have a Volvo V40 from 2005 with 450k with service history every 20k and still drives like new. I definitely recommend driving the same car more and carrying a good service history. It willl last 4ever!

I believe it’s still parked outside the unit and since Alex bought back miles and also bought a high mileage 330d from cars & custard. They are possibly planning to take them to Norway as they discussed on the podcast a few weeks back.

I got a golf mk4 1.9 TDI with the ALH engine, i got about 110k miles on it. I changed the timing belt two weeks ago for the first time, still running perfectly fine. This engine is very reliable.

Agree on keeping car going. My two have (between them) 260,000 miles, 10 cylinders, 11 gears, a combined age of 29 and lot of happy memories.

Nothing wrong with keeping old cars on the road. Lots thought I was nuts buying a 330i touring (E91) with 160k on the clock. It’s been frustrating at times but that’s been down to people skimping on maintenance in the past.

Great to see miles racking more miles! would HIGHLY recommend flushing the injectors by hooking up a bottle of seafoam or other injector cleaner straight to the injector pump, should clean out a ton of soot and other gunk. also swap the fuel filter, who knows how old that is by now...
