I love that this book ‘haul’ isn’t you unpacking a box of twenty books you bought online this week, but instead the books you’ve bought since 2022 started. I feel like those massive book hauls promote unhealthy consumerism and are also just simply not realistic. This feels much more fun and healthy!

You talking about true trope of a “grumpy middle-aged man who is forced to take care of a child” made me think about a film I recently saw called Summerland. it’s not about a grump man though, the grumpy one in this story is a woman who is made to take care of a child, and it’s a really sweet story about how their relationship unfolds. I would highly recommend watching it 😊

Before the Coffee Gets Cold has become very popular, but I didn't like it all that much - felt a bit too on the nose. Some of my favorites: Sayaka Murata has become quite popular in recent years, with one of her books Convenience Store Woman. Earthlings is one of my favorite books of all time, but it can be a very heavy read. Travelling Cat Chronicles is a bittersweet read. The cat has his own POV! The Forest of Wool and Steel is very atmospheric and doesn't have much of a plot, but the writing/translation is absolutely beautiful!

Hey Leonie! Not to shame you or anything like that, just to let you know in case you don't that indigenous people have qualms with A House In the Cerulean Sea given that the author said that he was inspired by residential schools when creating that story. He basically turned a very traumatic and often fatal experience into a cute fantasy and that doesn't feel right to them, from what I've seen. I'm not indigenous or american/canadian, so I can't explain further, but if you're interested I'd recommend checking reviews from indigenous people.

Yesterday I came back from our 4 day trip to Amsterdam and GOOD LORD what was going on at Schiphol yesterday. The line for security check started right after check- in and it took us 80 minutes to make it through security. I was told that it even made it onto the news today or last night. Anyways. On Friday I went to Waterstones and The American Bookseller. I treated myself with Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro (Waterstones had a real nice edition of it) and The City by Stella Gemmel (spontaneous buy because my daughter has the same first name! I started reading it and really am enjoying it!) Oh yeah, the rain on Thursday was impressive. I don't think I ever got THAT wet from rain before!

Hi Leonie! I’m a big fan of your videos and content. Just an FYI, the House of the Cerulean Sea was written by a Caucasian author and was “inspired” by the residential schools that took place in Canada. There are a couple articles written on it that expand on his “inspiration” but I would highly recommend reading some articles on the history of the residential schools as it was a horrible atrocity committed by the Canadian government for decades to the Indigenous population that resulted in constant physical, sexual, emotional abuse of children and over 4000+ homicides of children. The actual death toll is unknown.

If you want more Japanese translated books for your Japanese books video I'm reading this amazing book right now called the beast player by nahoko uehashi and it is literally a ghibli movie as a book - dont let the blurb fool you! It sounds like a fairly typical YA fantasy on the back but it's completely different and is actually really wholesome and whimsical and beautiful. It feels like a mix of princess mononoke, Howl's moving castle and totoro to me, as its got these majestic but dangerous mythical beasts like mononoke, the childlike wonder of totoro towards strange creatures and the beautiful peaceful found family moments of howl. I haven't seen many if anyone talk about it and its absolutely a hidden gem, would recommend!!!

Hi Leonie, the painting on the Cover of "a certain hunger" is a painting from Bernardino Mei called "Ghismunda". It depicts a scene from the Decameron (day 4 if you want to read this tale) WARNING(this is not a nice story)! where Ghismunda had wed secretly a servant (Guiscardo), her father found out and delivered the heart of her husband in a golden cup to Ghismunda. Out of grief she adds poison to the cup with the heart and commits suicide by drinking it.
