Lots of book covers from that era had very interesting and colorful ship designs. I always wanted to see an undamaged version of the ship from the Spacewreck cover. As a kid, I didn't know whether the asymmetrical look of the craft was from the crash damage or part of the ships original design.

Wonderful kitbashing and painting. I especially like the "pin-washing" section, as most videos I've seen, the washes go on perfectly, rather than showing that it is possible to clean spills effectively.

For a model like this, where everything is going to be super messy anyway, I'm not too worried about spilling over. On some of my other builds, like the Cantor-class, I tried to be much more careful about it to keep it clean.

One thing that you can do that was heavily use at ILM is to lightly mist a coat of base colour or grime back over everything. This settles all the colours and gives them a slightly sun damaged look. Like, airbrushing medium pressure from 30cm away. It's a really subtle effect, but a few different mists really takes the edge off everything and settles decals.

@@Sublight_Drive It's definitely different to most desktop model techniques like pin-washes that ILM didn't really use. The first time I tried it blew me away. Instantly changed my desktop looking model into a filming model. There's a definite "look" to the ILM filming models (if that's what your after, of course). I have been binging your videos since I found them and I think this might be my favourite. Fantastic build, great painting and beautiful weathering. It looks so 'lived in' and like a working machine. Have you ever thought about doing ground vehicles in the same scale as your Kingfisher? (Maybe you have and I just haven't got to that one yet) You've inspired me to dig out the Star Wars landspeeder I've been building from scratch with the same methods. It's been left abandoned and part finished for too long!
@earlware4322
@earlware4322 Жыл бұрын
Wow, this ship is just fricken' awesome!! I love it cuz it looks like an actual working freighter. Those decals really help sell it, and your weathering is spot on sir! When you said to keep the off-cuts I could barely see what you were talking about they were so tiny. Dude, I'd need a set of micro tweezers and some really strong maginfing readers to do that. In my experience things that small usually achieve terminal velocity and/or escape via a wormhole to a pocket dimension when I cut them free. 😑 Very little chance of me hanging onto them without an Interdictor's tractor beam Amazimg ship model! Keep on keeping on good sir!! 👍👍

I've watched all your scratch build videos, and made a couple of attempts (from pictures). BUT for me the hardest part is making templates at the start. I think everything is good, but when I start cutting out styrene, nothing wants to line up or things that should be symmetrical end up being wonky. Any tips for the pre-build stage?
@Sublight_Drive
@Sublight_Drive Жыл бұрын
Honestly it's just practice and learning which shapes come more easily than others. I've found that doing lots of sketches beforehand is helpful, but even then the version you see in my videos isn't the first one out the gate. I usually do two or three rounds of testing to get the right sizes and shapes. I recommend doing a dry run with just paper before you go to cutting styrene; that way you can see if all the pieces work the way you want before losing time and plastic on parts that don't fit.

I was wondering if you or anyone else on your channel has tried using a "vinyl cutter" like a Cricut or Silhouette to cut styrene sheets for these types of models? I tried this a few times with my Cameo for very very basic models and it works pretty darn good. I had to experiment with the settings but it's relatively easy considering you don't need to cut very deep at all, basically a score. I've only done simple cuts but want to try more complex shapes eventually.

Not ABS, just straight polystyrene. As I understand it ABS is tough to bond to other plastics. I actually got mine from an industrial plastic supplier nearish to where I live. @Sublight_Drive

I don’t use CAD software, all the templates I make are done in Affinity Designer, a 2D vector editing software. The only real difference between a papercraft version and a cutting template is the placement of the individual pieces. I actually make paper versions of most of my projects before I start cutting plastic, to test different sizes and proportions.
