That thin client. $30 isn't terrible, but there are far better options. $30 will get you a NanoPi M1 Plus. Way smaller. Quad-core instead of dual core. 1Gb RAM instead of 512Mb. 8Gb of EMMC instead of 4Gb. A microSD slot. And Wifi/BlueTooth if you need it. You can use the stock Debian or DietPi as an OS to launch whatever remote desktop client you like, instead of whatever sketch OS that thing is using. Or you could get a used Dell Wyse 3040 for $30. That will have better specs and an x86 CPU. You could also get a used Dell Wyse 5010 for like...$10?

Pretty sure that cage nut installer is for UNinstalling the cage nuts. I've seen similar tools floating around the datacenters I've worked in and they make all the difference when you need to remove stubborn cage nuts (granted a large flat head screwdriver can accomplish similar, but the cage nut tool is marginally easier)

Re: the M.2 to dual gigabit ethernet adapter, the best use is in a 1 liter PC (like a Dell WYSE 5070) to make a dual WAN pfSense router. I've got one setup it uses 9W and is silent. Using VLANs you CAN do everything over the single Ethernet port, but it's just easier (and redundant) to have a separate port for each WAN connection.

I love the add on stuff - cant even count the pcie nvme adapters I purchased that have really horrible speeds . I remember years ago - putting fan controllers and all kinds of wacky stuff in the 5.25 bays . I tried a newer case and thought I could go without a drive but it didn't work out for me . Plus I really like having my 2.5 and 3.5 hot swap drives right in front . Anyways ... I havent tried Aliexpress yet ... but saw they had some pretty cool stufff and will keep them in mind the next time I have that urge . Thanks !!

Would be cool to see someone test one of the 10Gb intel X520 SFP+ to M.2 Cards from Aliexpress for like $30. Curious if it actually would get the full 10Gb or not. I'm a sucker for these strange devices/gadgets from China, allot of the time its junk but sometimes you do find some usable decent quality items. I have a similar sized little screen that i brought from China and the problem with it is that they don't support HDCP and if one of your monitors connected does not support HDCP then you get limited by some streaming services to 720p on all of your monitors.

The dumb terminal... I've been using TV boxes. Like those Android TV boxes (I REALLY like the Xiaomi ones just because they're actually Android TV and certified so it's all just a really nice experience). They're already plugged into a TV, so that's the monitor sorted, and then I use Moonlight to connect to my desktop (which I have running Sunshine. What would the Windows equivalent be? Parsec I guess?). Wireless keyboard and mouse that I plug in when I need a remote terminal... It's basically like having terminals all over the house and it does allow for overlay modes and gaming etc. (although my desktop is a little too old to do it justice).

Half height, also known as low profile. LOL I’m using one of those cheap anti-sag things on my Intel ARC A770 LE, that doesn’t sag (just like yours). 😂 Case nuts, that’s a trauma for me. Tried the supplied thin metal thing, small screwdriver, fingernails, all a drama. Especially when removing the nuts of a 1U server, between other servers. No room to work with.

That cage nut installer actually could have been useful.. but for some reason they made it also squeeze the back region, right up against where the bends for the springs start.. I'd take a triangle file to it and make some reliefs so the main places it touches are more towards the tips of it's 'fingers'. Using as-is means it's basically trying to reform the springs once they actually do compress like that.. lol.. Might as well smack them on their sides with a hammer.

I have one. It can help sometimes - maybe 30% of the time. It all depends on where in the rack you are trying to mount the nut and where the equipment is. I wish someone made something like long nose pliers that hooked around so you pulled things in from the front.
@Roobotics
@Roobotics 10 күн бұрын
@@geoffsmith82 I don't think the concept is a bad idea at all, just the mechanical principles they failed to observe when designing it are my issue. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a 'good' version of them, and this is just a cheapo 'clone' where they did the absolute minimum to not be completely useless. But being able to leverage things from the front of a rack, could be more manageable.
@geoffsmith82

GAS is real. But you can find cool stuff on all of these sites, it's a matter of recognizing the bad from the good. Always read peoples feedback, even with 5 stars (which they often give to avoid being taken away), read what people say. Broken English and irrelevant feedback? It's fake. Long detailed descriptions? Probably real. It has worked for me so far and I've gotten a few bargains. Sometimes there are sales of actually good product that just missed on one mark, like this unit that connects to smart life and monitors air quality, these with a proper laser-chamber inside it usually costs upwards of 200 bucks, and most under that price is a fake with an alco-sensor on it. Turns out all it needed was a reset, and it worked flawlessly after that, and it had a laser-chamber (particle reader) inside it, the real deal for a fraction of the price. There's a lot of gems like that, but you need to do research before you get to the good stuff out there.
