this is only good as a beater. You do know its £10k for a good windows out paintjob now yeah? The floor and sils needing done will be £2-3k and then the stripping part to get rid of all the junk coating on the underside will be a massive bill too. He best hope the engine is rock solid because if that needs opening and fixed up then jeez there goes near £30k for a car that wont ever be considered a mint example. Would be £40k tp get this immaculate right now. Possibly more. He cant spray paint or weld so thats why he should have avoided and got a mechanically dodgy one with a good body.

I’ve done a full rebuild everything off and it’s a lot of painstaking work, this is what your car needs, fix your gremlin/ mechanical problems first then strip it out engine back get all that mechanical , fuel lines and body sorted , I say get the gremlins fixed now because after the body work and mechanical refresh you don’t want to be mawling with it, you want to be able to throw it back together and it’s done, otherwise your chasing your arse and that is guaranteed to make you hate it Good purchase for the Long haul .

niice … gotta be a full strip down to a bare shell , sort the floor pan and any other panels out ….full respray on the shell and all the running gear etc … pop in ur spare cosworth big bhp engine …rebuild the original lump if needed and keep stored if u ever sell the car to put back in … this car has the potential to be a KZbin mega step by step build back to mint condition

Do you know much about the history of the car ? You said it's from up north, I'm pretty confident this used to live in Gateshead, I can't be 100% sure but I remember viewing an N plate red escort identical to this in 2003, it had the factory cloth, Air con, same wheels and the main thing I remembered was the gear lever lock which you didn't often see back then. If I remember correctly the guy that owned it was getting divorced from his wife and needed rid sharpish.

The car looks good and look forward to updates. I’d expect any 27/28 year old cosworth to have this sort of problem ( sold my last escort cosworth in 2007 and rust was already an issue back then on a 93 K reg). I think Paul’s description is him looking at a regular condition cosworth vs the exceptional condition cars he specialises in. You have got yourself a very nice usable base to work from. Won’t take long to sort out the running problems then up to you if and when to try and make the cosmetics better ( or just leave it as it is use and enjoy without being too precious about it).

Paul said it needs a lot doing. He should have held out for one with a good body and underside just mechanically needing sorted. This body and underside is bad-ish and mechanically well it doesnt sound to sweet, overheating and was bottom endy on that start up too.

When I was told about the sill design holding water I went and drilled 2x small holes at the rear / lowest point and the amount of water that came out was nuts 😂 mines painted underside with black por15. Nice and shiny black and still looks good. Just over 10 year now scince it was painted

It drains itself mate. It's only when it got clogged up with dirt the moisture stayed in them so drilling it does nothing infact it lets even more water in from underneath when driven in the rain. Its the added mushy medium that holds the moisture in all winter long thats the problem not the actual water getting into them and passing out when you moved it. Theres nothing you can do bar take it off every 2 winters and clean it out. Honestly, i bet Paul tells you this in one of his vids as he has a lot of info on there. If you got water comming out when you drilled then its because it was clean and the car must have been recently got wet?

Also a common thing mechanics and body guys did to them was use marine sealer foam in them and they did drill holes in them to do that. One i seen done was off the car at the time they sealered up the ridge allong the bottom then put the skirt on then foamed it up via holes they had drilled. Ive no idea how well it worked but the guys that did this are well known here in Scotland for being the top cosworth guys.

My car use to cut out, overheat and not start. My fuse box was at fault, dry fuse wire. My guy had it in and out of the car 5 times, fault finding. Never had anymore problems. Mk5 escort, not cos.
