The Ford Escort RS Cosworth is a rally version homologation special of the fifth generation European Ford Escort. It was designed to qualify as a Group A car for the World Rally Championship, in which it competed between 1993 and 1998. It was available as a road car from 1992 until 1996. The powertrain was only fitted to this version of the Escort, a longitudinally mounted Cosworth YBT, a highly tunable turbocharged 2.0 L (1,993 cc) with a bore x stroke of 90.8 mm × 77 mm (3.57 in × 3.03 in) Inline-four engine[1][2] which had an output of 227 PS (167 kW; 224 bhp) in standard trim. Tuning companies have achieved power outputs in excess of 1,000 bhp (746 kW; 1,014 PS)

That is so sweet having your own hydraulic ramps! Don`t worry about it dropping, it should have a built in safety so if the hydraulics fail it will be caught mechanically. Those hydraulic lifters beat the crap outta using fixed ramps, it makes things SO MUCH quicker and easier. All the best with getting that beautiful Escort Cossie back on the road mate!

I was thinking that trying to put a new blower resistor on mine. You need to get in a fetal position with the passenger seat slid right back while having hands half the size of normal hands, while you can't even see the screw and are feeling around for it, with a stubby screwdriver. With a ramp I'd have it done in 10 seconds. Without a ramp it couldn't even be done and I just left it loose 😂

Congratulations on the new car. Just watched the latest video. Hope I'm not stepping on your toes but please re-check your rear brakes, the pistons need to be set so they locate into the pip on the brake pads. In the video ,the pad with the pip is on the outside unless all four have locating pips which is unusual. I'm local to you and am a mechanic and mot tester with a passion for old fords so have some experience. Please get in touch if you need a hand diagnosing possible head gasket trouble.

also do your wheels again Adam. What do you think the taper on the lugs are for? You need to tighten them up a bit at a time you melt or the wheel isnt centred on the hub. If you fully tighten one up before getting anything on the others then you are trapping the wheel in that position and the wheel is not only out of centre and likely to act like imbalanced wheel at speed, but its dangerous as it causes lugs to come undone. You try that on a big 4x4 with a heavy BFG on it and you will 100% have a wheel come off within 250miles. I like you mate but why buy all the tools when you cannot even be bothered doing things correctly?

I would also add that on some rear calipers like that you have to wind the piston back our slightly to get it set on the threads again for the handbrake adjuster mech inside, Im pretty sure I remember if you wind it out too far you have to wind it all the way back in and then out a bit again to set it right, you can only adjust it outwards not back in, or something along those lines.

I think your headgasket is fine to be honest because you aren't losing fluid and there is no white smoke. Just go through the cooling system and make sure your thermostat is actually opening when it reaches temp, also you can get different temp ratings so make sure you have the right one. As for the hot start make sure your fuel relays arent on the way out or they haven't cheaped out of the spark plugs with low temp rated ones. Might worth cleaning up the earth points.

Yes, the thermostat open on very high degree, the radiator fans should be kicking on aswell, a common thing on older fords is the radiator fans get stuck, i would check with the hand when the car is off if the radiator fans can be spinned easy.

I would get the radiator out , get it flow tested or cleaned out , if you're doing a timing belt do the water pump at the same time. Also the ramps have mechanical locking pins in them , the car won't fall down on you , it will be safe , have confidence 👍👍 good series this bud , keep up the good work 👍

One car I bought, low mileage, only local runs into town, always serviced, took it on a run, it started to overheat, when safe I opened the radiator cap, it was brown soup, took many flushes to clear out, all the sediment was moving in the system, once flushed out and new antifreeze it was fine, something was missed over the years a proper coolant flush.
@K2edg
@K2edg 10 ай бұрын
As above......... i've seen it a few times where old antizreeze breaks down over time and you get sludge in the lower areas of the rad and engine. Also make sure you have the heater on full hot too, i've seen problems (although not on a Cosworth) where the Matrix is full of air and for the life of us it looked like a head gasket gone....... If you want a 100% head gasket or not test, go to your local garage and get a sniffer test done on the coolant (it's a test that looks for exhaust gasses in the coolant and you get a chemical reaction if there is showing a good or bad head gasket).
@bigeein
@bigeein 10 ай бұрын
Yeh your right , flush the system , replace the water pump and thermostat. Then look at head gasket. Also check your fan is working. Bridge the fan switch at the radiator to make sure it’s running. Remove the switch from the fan. Use a split pin or bit of wire. Bridge the connection. Switch on the ignition and the fan should run. If not your radiator fan has gone. Also check that the radiator itself isn’t clogged with dirt in between the fins.

Instant subscribe. A likeable dude doing his own mechanical work on an absolute classic of a car. Very good work! Could the problems you're having be caused by a knackered/blocked radiator? It's been sat for 6 years, right?! EDIT: I'd feel uncomfortable under the car on a new lift too. But they do have a safety feature in case it fails, which is highly unlikely if it was installed correctly. I'd say give each post a knock before using the lift and keep up with the maintenance and you'll be just fine.

My advice is to ignore people in the comments telling you to change water pumps, pull the radiator etc. First thing you need to do before throwing parts at it or pulling anything apart is perform a compression test and leakdown test. That will tell you definitively whether the head gasket is gone or not. First rule of fixing anything; diagnose the problem before trying to fix it.

Should check to see if the radiator top and bottom fill is the same temperature, if it’s not you have bad coolant circulation, don’t jump to head gasket yet, have the radiator checked, drill a 5mm pilot hole in your thermostat and fit it back into its housing with the bleed hole at 12 o’clock position

Circulation problem, you didnt appear to bleed the system, air vent on top of t stat, also pull off 8mm pipe at turbo return, if no water then remove turbo feed pipe from the 8mm brass pipe coming from the back of the t stat to check its clear, this can choke up. Id be removing the complete t stat assembly from the head to check in behind. The fact that theres no heat coming from the bottom hose shows no circulation. If it was the water pump Im sure you'd hear that.

We put a mk1 sierra xr4x4 back on the road after 20 years in the garage, first thing we did was flush through all the water ways, it still had the original anti freeze in it....we changed it all gave everything we could get to a good clean and some of it had blocked up, heads have never been off and its still on the original water pump and hoses, we have done 2500 miles since june 2022 without any issues now, in fact sometimes expecially on longer motorway runs, its running probably a bit to cool, but thats not a issue....

You could try taking the car to someone with an emissions tester. They can put the probe in the header tank and test for hydrocarbons on the coolant. It's not 100% accurate but it might help point you in the right direction. Or give you piece of mind. Don't worry about the ramp it'll be fine with you under it. Just keep it regularly checked by professionals. Looking forward to seeing more of the build, keep up the good work.👌

And just keep an eye on the pipes and when the thermostat pipe gets warm check the levels as it may drop due to air being trapped let it get warm and put the cap back on,, also I’m not sure if your aware there is also a thermostat in the cap that can also cause it to over heat,,I had my RST do a very similar thing an it was trapped air,

HG is not rocket science to replace, just time consuming, however as already said, refresh the cooling system, it sounds like it needs it anyway and it is something you don't have to worry about again. No start could be fuse board corrosion. I think the big turbo cars has this problem, not 100% sure on the small turbo, Does the car have an after market alarm? Great video series. Subscribed. I wish you good luck, Adam.

I had similar issues with my sons fiesta. It turned out there was hairline cracks in the expansion tank. So the cooling system was not pressurised. On hot days the coolant would raise to the point of overflowing.. I changed the radiator, cooling fan, temp sensor, fuses. And it still done it. On the Fiesta the Fan doesn’t kick in to 106c so the coolant was boiling. Changed the Expansion tank £27 from Fords and that sorted it..

I think the only things you should do to the car is get some escort cosworth wheels and maybe try and make the original design third wing, would be one of a kind!!!! Keep up the good work mate

im thinking blocked rad or water pump, if its had rad seal in it at some point that'll mess things up.

This. Should the pipe out of the radiator be totally cold? If the outlet pipe is dead cold, then maybe no coolant is getting out of the radiator?

@@notmenotme614agreed, coolant in the header tank should also be 'warm' so yeah, blocked rad or failed water pump would be my guess.

Have you checked the underside of the oil cap to see if it’s creamy on the inside edge or the dipstick to see if the water is mixing with the oil? There is no white smoke and you have cold pipes so it could be the water pump. The most likely cause is a radiator blockage due to the slow drainage. I never worked on an Escort Cosworth but I did rebuild the engine in my RS Turbo many years ago. The principals for these issues should be the same.

Sweet car Adam 👍🏽love your not shy with the grease. Could be the rad is blocked Id try flush it in situ pull the bottom hose and flush from the top hose with a hose pipe or pressure washer. I know this might sound a bit stupid Adam but when you buy a new rad sometimes they come with internal bungs in the end to stop the outlets getting damaged could be a possibility the previous slipped the hose over it an didn’t check

Did you check your oil? filler cap will have milky oil on it if water is getting in,check the dipstick and check the oil level,if it has gone up there could be water in there,or you can run the engine,if it overheats turn your heater on at the highest heat setting,if the temp goes down your head gasket is blown.good idea would be to change water pump and radiator when you change your belts,it's a old car been standing.

Check the matrix hoses dude incase it’s blocked preventing flow making sure there both hot, you’ve looked at the thermostat the next check I would do is make sure the waterpump is pumping water around the system and if not get it off as it most likely lost some fins and they are stuck in your cooling system making a blockage. When you started it I didn’t see no white smoke pumping out so I’m not certain but I’d put head gasket on the back of the mind for the problem.

take rad out and fill with boiling water...check for hot spots...if rad is not hot all over then the rad is blocked...and if you look at over flow hose to the tank there should be water flowing on tick over,if not the pump is knackard...hope this helps

First thing I'd try is the Rad, Whilst in situ remove both top and bottom hoses and stick your hosepipe in the top hose entrance it show fly out the bottom if it doesn't then that's your problem, I would also reverse flush as well just to be sure.

Back flush the heater matrix, for the overheating problem. If the car just keeps cutting out, check the fuse for the cigarette lighter. Sounds crazy, but my dad had the same thing happening on an Sierra 4x4, turned out it was the cigarette lighter fuse blown, causing the engine to cut out.

Pull the dip stick out if there is gunk on it then head gaskets gone. You can also take the rocker cover gasket off and check under there as well.. I'd definitely change the water pump and the timing (cam belt) as well as its been sitting so long..

First thing to do would be to check the oil filler cap for cream cheese, that'll be a sign of water mixing with your oil and a knackered head gasket.
