I freaking knew it. Car washes can gross a lot of money. The location I manage does like 130k/ GP a month. Express wash, free self serve vacs.
@Chicagoguy
@Chicagoguy 3 жыл бұрын
Surprisingly high gross yes especially after thaws or bad weather. But the net profit overtime is the tricky part. The equipment costs can be extremely high so you have to budget for long term replacement costs and insurance. Add in taxes salaries for a good maintenance guy. The margin shrinks fast. Bottom line car washes rarely bring in huge bottom line profit figures but if maintained well and if in a good location they are likely to stay at a safe positive cash flow. Most go under because of bad management or major damage with inadequate capital or insurance to get back up.
@Rolexenforcer
@Rolexenforcer 3 жыл бұрын
@@Chicagoguy you forgot one important thing, the cost of water. I own a laundromat and I pay between $7- $8,000 every 3 months in water alone. If he's running well water, he'll save a ton of money but I doubt it's well water because of the sheer volume the car wash would need.

@MycolMushington
@MycolMushington 3 жыл бұрын
@@Chicagoguy This is mostly true. I've managed multiple gas stations within a large chain in the upper mid west. Car washes break down constantly. We had dedicated maintenance guy who bounced around between the stores in our city just fixing our washes. Each store's wash was rebuilt every 5-10 years. The company I worked for LOVES the profit from the car washes. While I was there it became a huge focus of theirs. Car wash sales also provided me some super fat bonuses. (24K one year!) Our wash cost averaged $0.63/wash and at $10+/wash, that's insane profit. Keeping them well maintained definitely saves money! Also, an unlimited subscription that bills monthly to the customer's credit card helps a lot too!

With the kind of cash flow your having at those locations. It may actually be a situation where you want to have the money picked up more often at least on the weekends and where there is higher volume. I would look into security camera software that can count cars in and outs possibly with license plate scanners. Not only would it give you more data and security but you could just periodically look at it and go oh we had 500 cars pass threw the property it might be time to do a pickup. Also on night cash pickups solo is just a bad idea. Better to shell out 20 or 30 bucks an hour an have someone watch your back. Credit cards really will help though. Its amazing how many people just don't carry cash at all.

Depending on how the credit card thing works out, I'd get a quote from a couple armoured transport services (If they are affordable in your area). Let their employees take the risk, and their insurance cover it if something happens. Aside from that, its best to be 'predictably unpredictable'; roll a 12 or 20 sided dice to decide when to collect money, and another roll to decide which location to go to first. Also, have a few different routes. This would make it difficult for a person to observe a routine, as it is left almost entirely to chance. Good luck with the new businesses Brandon!

I recommend either some type of man “purse” or book bag to carry the cash so it is less suspicious. Most people aren’t expecting 3 grand to be in someone’s book bag. It just looks like someone who is working. That is what most people in the ATM business do. Either way, I recommend putting the cash in some kind of bad so no one knows you have cash. That’s what I do for the snack machine company I work for; I fill about 10-20 machines a day and usually by the end of the day have about $1-3,000 on me.

Since you're in spoony-ville I'd definitely change up when you collect to not create a pattern if you're being watched. I'd keep the totals split so you know if one had a loser week it may help identify issues with equipment quicker. The one local wash here has 3 self-serve bays and 2 automatics and it's an older man that owns it. Really nice guy and I've struck up a convo a few times with him. He's owned it for 41 years and completely rebuilt the place back in the late 90's. When he's doing maintenance and collecting, he'll hand out dollar tokens or 4 quarters to random people.

I worked for a car dealership’s complimentary loss leader car wash for six years in Metro Cincinnati. When it is super cold and salty on the road, then it warms up suddenly, that is the most busy it ever was. I’d have 30 cars waiting for me when I’d get to work to open at 9:00 AM, and there’d often be no break in the line until 6:00 when I closed.

Track your revenue for each individual bay. Spreadsheet it with a trend chart. That way you can more easily track revenue vs expense of self serve vs full serve PLUS with trend lines you can more easily find issues with equipment if there is a sudden drop or spike in revenue on a single bay. You need to exclude any and all change machine counts other than to determine if you are net gain or loss in change given vs. inserted into the coin acceptors.

To collect: pull into the bay with you buckets in the trunk area, get right past the vault door, keys out at the ready, pop the vault dump it, close the trunk, lock the vault, repeat on each bay. Carry protection all the time, never turn your back and don’t become complacent. Collect in daytime, just don’t do it at night. Don’t collect at the same time,, go early one day, high noon another and afternoon and late afternoon - you don’t want people noticing a pattern of when you collect. Once you get cameras and such maybe sure your cameras cover all angles around the maintainece room so you can collect from the bill exchanger with the door closed, lockeed and have a way to make sure the coast is clear to exit.

Harsh but effective 3) start going at 4-5 am and physically shut each bay as you go in it. I know that can hinder your business, but for safety it could be worth it

I ended up getting robbed by a guy in MA and he took off with my wallet and wad of cash after that point in my 2 service trucks there is now a mini remote safe in the trucks for all petty cash that we chose to carry on us so it didn't happen again. The other thing that resulted in this happening is now myself and my 2 employees all carry personal protection on us at all times to prevent that from happening and labeled all vehicles in the fleet with stickers on the door that says driver carries no cash kinda like fedex does on their trucks. Lesson learned I'm 2k down from it but upped my security and procedures making us a safer buisness

Just wanted to say, as a Canadian with our winters; winter time is or slushy or yucky rainy days are the MOST popular days for car washes. It is MUCH better during winter / cold / gloomy days, people don't want to wash their car themselves and rather pay 15$ to go through a drive through. Summer time we'd rather wash our cars ourselves or pay for vacuums. Just make sure it doesnt stop working during gloomy days.

I manage a parking lot and these are the tips I have for you: 1) Frequent deposits of cash. Do it daily or have your business partner and you split the days of the week on who goes and collects (example- you do mon-thrus, they do fri-sun). 2) Open an account with the nearest bank to handle the money for this business. Meaning driving the shortest distance from the business to the bank. 3) How much would an armored car service cost? 4) Always do the count with someone else to verify funds and have that person go with you to the bank. Why? in a cash heavy business like this it is easy for someone to get sticky fingers and pocket that $50.00 bill. 5) Don't count the cash at night or early morning hours. Count it during the day time hours when you have high visibility. As for the quarters, my question is "is that the amount in the bucket the amount of quarters left AFTER refilling the quarter dispenser?" I mean quarters to me are just tokens in a coin op business. They aren't really "profit" because people exchange the dollars for quarters. The only time quarters are profit is if someone brings quarters with them to pay for the vaccum services, but you also have the issue of people exchanging dollars for quarters and walking off with the quarters. Also with the quarters collection, does that include the vaccums?

Apart from credit cards, in my country "prepaid discount cards" are used a lot. You charge a magnetic card with money, and get extra credit if you charge over than a certain amount. Then you can use the credit for all machines on the premises: carwash, soda, car accessories and the like. You should also look into japanese-style vending machines.

I remember driving my 67 mustang to a car wash one time. I washed the car and went to go vacuum the carpets next. The owner an older guy came up and started talking about how he loved the mustang and how he used to have one. Anyways he offered to turn the vacuum on for free so I could finish cleaning my car. This being a bigger city with several other car washes, I decided to go to his car wash every weekend just simply based off his hospitality. Him being nice and allowing me to vacuum my car for free made it an easy decision to pick his car wash out of the 10 + other ones.
