I am looking for a dumb phone, not because I don’t like my smart phone but because I like it too much.

It's not a dumb phone because it does more than texting and calling. It's minimalist feature phone. I will buy one soon.

With technological advancement the standard for dumb phone has gone up. So this is a dumb phone. A phone which only calls and texts nowadays is not a dumb phone its a electronic brick imo.

People say it costs too much money yet they will buy a $1000 dollar Apple Phone. In turn they use your data and track you.
@JoannaK70 Жыл бұрын
@Sunny Singh That's a very stupid excuse. Just because it "betters your life" doesn't mean it should be worth 300 dollars. If you TRULY wanted to "better your life" then you would probably buy something like a cheap Nokia phone that has the same functions as the light phone. Not only would you get the same results with that cheap phone, but you would also have saved a lot of money which you might need in the future.

You are buying into a product from a grass roots company that is responding to the growing phone addiction culture, lack of privacy, incessant product advertisements, etc in smart phones. Some will see it as a valuable and welcome change product and some will not. Neither side is wrong. When I think of the money I’ve thrown at Apple for their products (yet I am now like a mouse on a hamster wheel, scrolling night and day like a dopamine-hit zombie), it is embarrassing. On the other hand, $300 is far less money for a much greater purpose. I want my time and focus back. Some of you can stop excess phone time with willpower. The rest of us need a little assistance. If we could buy a medication that would allow us to improve our focus, sleep better, and possibly be happier, we would willingly pay the $. In other words, you are not paying $300 for the plastic and e-ink, but for the goal of a simpler, more focused life, by using a tool made by a company who believes in our privacy and the value of our time and attention, and is actively upgrading the features and improving the functionality of this unique tool. Early adopters like me (my Light Phone 2 is on preorder) are willing to invest in the product and deal with the growing pains of its current imperfections because we believe in the mission to take back our time, attention and privacy. It would be hard to put a monetary value on that.

i love the fact there’s no camera….that’s the main selling point for me. my biggest pet peeve is my friends always stopping to take photos of everything, photos of their food, posing for photos, etc….the amount of time i’ve wasted standing there trying to take the perfect photo for someone. also, i’ve never looked at old photos except to show people my dog.

That is interesting, I don't think I have ever taken a posed photo, or a photo of my food. I normally just snap it in the moment or take a video and move on with my day. I understand what you are saying, posed pictures are very annoying

Regarding price, I think the point needs to be made that this is a niche item that is not being produced in huge quantities and probably can't take advantage of the same economies of scale as many other devices. A Kindle has similar tech and is much cheaper. That said, the Kindle is produced in massive quantities. In addition, I suspect that Amazon may even sell them at a loss, then recoup the costs with e-book sales (just my hunch). I think the price is fair for what you're getting. It's a thoughtfully-implemented, "boutique" phone that has a nice, minimalist design language and a proprietary operating system. Something like that takes a lot of R&D to develop from scratch.

So I see that you’re trying to solve the problem of overusing your phone. Why do you need to buy new things that worsen the more critical parts of a smartphone company? Why not just remove/block apps on your existing smartphone? I find that in a lot of areas, a subtractive approach is a lot better than an additive approach.

Similar to asking why people would pay a personal trainer when you could just eat less and go for a run everyday. Human psychology and behavioral change isn’t easy. What seems easier- Using willpower to not eat the chips in the cupboard? Or not allowing them in the house in the first place.

Telling someone who is addicted to something to just not do it. There has to be a barrier. A barrier that can be removed by just a click (a download) is barely even a barrier that will block even the weakest of media addictions

I mean honestly, I think even though the others have a point in saying "Well, it's cheap because you're selling your data instead" - I think there's still merit to saying that we need a whole load more dumbphones that are at consumer-competitive prices and not just prices that either justify the novelty of a premium phone (despite the lack of features given that it's a dumbphone) or justify the extra fees that should somehow be associated with just having a phone that doesn't do extra shit (which I argue should still be much cheaper than the $200-400 range). Hopefully if more people were in the market for dumbphones like these I think they'd at least sell at enough of a volume to finally start cutting prices down. However for now I guess too many people are going to either have to 'sell their data and get a cheaper phone' or... Unfortunately stick to a smartphone that's somehow cheaper than any of these options. It'd be nice if there were more dumbphones that worked for modern cell carriers without having a "price you have to pay", because ultimately that price is only so high because these are still low-volume selling productions and not because it's "the price you should pay if you don't want to sell your data". Hopefully the volume ticks up in the 2020s so that the prices make more sense.
