We need to find out the age-old question, is this Smith & Wesson M&P tactical knife worth your hard-earned money? To find out if it's worth it, we need to know three things. How good is the build construction? Is it sharp? Will it survive the dishwasher?
You can check out the knife on Amazon if you’d like: amzn.to/3FLyLEN
At the time of recording, this knife cost $19.10, I noticed that the price has been going all over the place, at the time of posting this video the price is now $33.11.

The only $20 survival knife I trust is a Mora. You can also find a Glock knife for not much more money, but they’re only hardened to 55 HRC and don’t sharpen up very well. A Mora will get scary sharp without a lot of work on a stone or a strop loaded with compound

It's a $20 knife. I'd say it's a great value for $20. You really can't expect much for $20 these days. I mean obviously it's not a Ka-Bar, or Cold Steel, or a Schrade or something even higher end but you're going to pay damn good money for those. I don't think we could really expect it this to perform like $100 knife for $20. But as a general utility knife for camping or something, if someone knows how to touch up the edge occasionally, this knife would last for decades if it wasn't abused.

I have one. The ones without the saw back specifically. Not sure why they don't make that one anymore. It was my first real knife. The only bad thing, and this might have changed, is that the edge is pretty bad. A small price to pay fir a rock solid knife. Just put a better edge on it and you're good. It's got a fairly beefy edge geometry, but if you want a knife that takes a beating that's not a bad thing.

Part of the problem with mass-produced knives is in the mass production techniques. In the very best cases, they might get individually heat-treated in a machine cycle of some kind, but most of the time they're cycled on racks, which means that each individual unit isn't getting the attention it really needs to have a reliable temper--and that's just one problem among many.

I hit the knife by mistake really hard an a metall fence bar once, it did shop a little of the edge off but it was simple to fix with my grunder (tormek T-8) I would say it's a really good knife for the price id you respect the knife for what it is :) however my version are not the same one you have since the way the guard is fixed is diffrent, I wonder if you have an older version or a new version of the knife, and if I have a older version or new version of the knife😁😁 I bougth the knifes 2 years ago. I have a theory about the pin in the tang. I suspect those knife blanks may have been misdrilled and sold as cheap defects or intended for a different handle and the pin was inserted as a cheapo filler to save the otherwise defective/useless knife blanks. Im sure they are mass produced and if someone ran a few cases through the drill press in the wrong fixture this would be a likely result.

So... I like the video concept. I agree with conclusion the knife is cheaply made and constructed. A few things to consider... I liked all the initial cut tests except for the fruit ninja stuff. Fruit, veggies, and plastic bottles only showed how skilled you are at sharpening. A few of those you can pretty much do with a butter knife. Instead consider getting a edge testing device. Maybe test how sharp it starts vs. how sharp an edge it can take. Different steels have different strengths and weaknesses. Maybe test how long the edge lasts. Cutting sisal rope is great for that if not exactly as flashy or fun. The bend test is absolutely a thing (though more for swords if I recall correctly) ... but perhaps preface it with some info on how far a knife of that style should bend and still return to true. Check some of Cold Steels old KZbin proof videos to see that test done properly (if over dramatically) Absolutely loved the dishwasher test. The combination of heat and moisture is a great benchmark to test corrosion resistance. Especially the heat dry afterwards. It would be incredibly rough on any wooden handled high carbon knife though. (Definitely hand wash those. Lol) Maybe vary the testing for knives based on the style of knife it actually is before abuse/destruction testing. A fighting knife isn't a bushcraft knife. Both have very different construction, edge geometry, etc, etc... A fighting or hunting knife are more designed to cut types of meat... a bushcraft knife is meant to cut wood. I also liked the deconstruction of the knife. Perhaps consider doing that while it is still in one piece and make predictions on how the knife will hold up before testing. In conclusion: The video was entertaining if not exactly scientific. The fruit and water bottles needs a before and after sharpening to show the difference cleaness of the cuts to habe a point other than just entertainment value. Using what was specifically a fighting knife for cutting wood... seemed suboptimal... maybe cut up a roast for dinner instead?

For anyone still following these comments looking for a very good knife at a great price, check out Varusteleka out of Finland. I own 3 of them and for what you get, I don't think they can be beat at the price point they are at. Terava Jaakaripuuko 110, and 140. Check them out. Excellent customer service and they don't try to gouge you on shipping either. I'm also a big fan of BPS Knives out of Ukraine. I have about six or seven of them and they are a little cheaper than Varusteleka's offerings in general and and are excellent working man's knives in my opinion. I would love to see Kyle thest either of those two companies offerings. I am in no way affiliated with either of those companies, just a guy living off grid in Alaska who loves knives, and uses them daily.
