Great upgrade Matt. I would have done the same thing for my my 996 Turbo but my family decided to buy me a PCCM last Christmas. I am really happy with it. I am spoiled with Apple Car Play I need it on all my cars. I just ordered kit for my 2011 Mercedes S550. Much cheaper at $450 and it uses the stock MB screen.

3 things. One, you ordered the one with the wrong colour surround hense the clash in silver/grey. You will find that the fader doesn't work due to the Bose amp, to get the fader to work you need additional wiring by taking an RCA from the sub out on the head unit and splicing it into the Bose amp wiring. Finally my recommendation is to also add a line driver between the head unit and the optical box as the head units output is weaker than the OEM and you lose a lot of punch and top volume. Hope this helps.

So does the line driver really help? I did the same job with Bose/Chinese Android and noticed no punch to the sound. Fitted a Kicker LOC line out converter to the Chinese speaker outs to convert to better RCA line out and made a huge difference but the sound distorts mid-volume which I guessed may be due to cr@ppy amp in the Chinese unit distorting at louder volumes. Decided to order a decent AudioControl line driver to take the original RCA to higher voltage into the fibre converter... its not arrived yet but hopefully it will make a diffence!?

Hi Matt, I work for suncoast parts. The reason why it’s super expensive is because they are imported and taxed, but having seen these “knock offs” installed more and more I belive they are just about the same device but less cost due to the non branding. Cheers.

You can paint the trim to match. I did it with my old range rover. Theres a duplicolor trim paint that works well. Save the $1000.

I think you can take the bezel off and spray it a closer color to the rest of the controls.

I have the PCCM+ and i made it "wireless" by pluging in a wireless box to the usb connector. The thing that sucks the most is that the usb is in the front, so the best you can hide that cable going to the wireless box the better. An angled and flat usb cable makes it easier to hide. Some people got the rear usb working for carplay but that requires some soldering and/or magic that i didnt want to try.

There is only one way to make an older car usable, ditch the old audio system. I did the same in my E39. New speakers, amp, reverse camera and bluetooth are awesome. One issue I have however, whilst the steering wheel controls work on the head unit, they do not work when in Android Auto mode. I don't get the hate for Nickleback, maybe because I am Aussie?

I BOUGHT ONE for my daughter for fiat 500 from 2010, and i can say it is game changer. The car has now better overal system better sound system than any other car prior 2022 I have driven. it is the best radio/car play/android simply unit. You can get, But I bought one with larger processor and ram. For faster system , and my daughter is super happy with it

just get the frame from the old stereo then make a run to the paint store and ask the guy to make you a spray can with the same color and respray the new stereo frame to make everything match, that's what i did on my Volvo

Sending this to a customer of mine with a 997/Bose combo. Also, I've had to do that volume trick on multiple Bose cars. Also had to do it on a Lexus with a factory amplifier/Grom install. Pretty common. Edit: I'd also thought about respraying the radio and climate bezels with SEM trim black on his as that rubberized coating isn't in great shape being a cabrio. It's not fun getting the old goop off but will look 10x better all in black with a factory looking texture that SEM is so good at.

Personally, pull the new kit apart, pull the face off, have it sprayed to match the car, and it would look factory. It should just pop off. That would finish the look. I drive a 2014 Lexus LS460, I added a wireless Android Auto/Apple car play kit that uses all the factory controls. Would never look back the old school system. It's great.

i just installed one in my 997. the silver trim is off for sure. I bought some behr metallic soft iron in satin spray paint from home depot and sprayed it. looks way better.

I would recommend instead of getting the Porsche radio, get the install kit through sun coast Porsche which will perfectly match the trim, and allow you to install a double din radio in instead, which will still look factory while getting the most modern system from either alpine or pioneer, which will allow you to retain wireless CarPlay. That is my car in the link.

Sweet update, arguably better than the Porsche branded upgrade. I’m doing the same thing with my W203 C230 Sport. Mine looks even more OEM because it keeps the buttons on the side

Nice video. Definitely good for the price but the PCCM Plus would definitely look better and match the other trim. Also not sure if you know this or not but there are aftermarket receivers you can buy which enable wireless carplay and android auto on wired only units. Keep up the great work, closing in on 100k!

If you go to PCCM+ you will need to wire in a DAB aerial to receive Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) signals in a car. DAB uses different frequency ranges than FM, so you can't use an FM antenna to receive DAB.

I'm a big fan of cheap Android head units. I have one in my E36 and my daily junker. As far as the color goes, they're usually easy to take apart if you want to paint the frame to match. Bring the old head unit to a paint shop to color match a spray can.

Hey Matt, just picked up pretty much the same unit for my 997 from Ali Express as well. There's actually 2 finishes, the seller that I worked with had me send a photo to clarify if I had the gray or silver variant. I had the gray like your original head unit. Got my unit in a couple days ago and it's an exact match, maybe reach out to the seller to see if they can get you the darker bezel. Also, as far as this system not being plug and play and needing to splice in a few things...were those wires that needed to be spliced only for the rear camera, or did something else have to be wired in as well? Love the channel, criminally underrated.

Man, just paint the stereo in the correct color and enjoy! I think those chinese models can display some VAG-COM stuff, read errors, RPMS and so on, and that stuff you will never get in the Porsche stereo. Again, stick with it, it's awesome.

I did the same on my 997 turbo about a year and a half ago. Hated the idea of paying $1300 for a less feature rich radio. Plus the wire 🤮. Also got flamed pretty good by the forum/facebook crowd for putting "cHeAp ChInEsE cRaP" in my 911 but hey, some people dont want to acknowledge that their pccm+ is the same thing, just with a porsche logo 😅. Anyhow, dig the vid, brought vack fun install memories. You get a sub from me, sir.

The irony here is that my 997 turbo has the bright silver interior finish, so when I bought the PCCM Classic I had to pull the bezel off and have it painted - I could have saved $1000 and it looks like your cheap head unit would have actually matched my interior. Oh well....

I really wanted PCCM+ when I got my 996 but I’ve read some bad reviews on them and you have to pay the Porsche garage to fit it otherwise they won’t stand over any problems…. So it could be a €2k unit and they still have issues. No thanks.

I think Nickelback owes everyone at least a nickel. I did an upgrade to the head unit in my car and went with an aftermarket one that was made specific to my car. It has the finishes and button styles and glow color that are native to the car It also came wired/wireless car play/android auto and all the good stuff. I also did not need to but an adapter. It literally plugs right into the stock harness and the mic, aux and can bus all works. Steering wheel controls info on the car like doors open, HVAC info, tire pressure, and backup camera all works.
