Welcome to Corvette ownership. I had the totalled EBP Prelude and have only commented once or twice. I am on my second C5 a silver 01 Z06 which I purchased from a friend with a damaged motor, should have started a youtube channel with that one. My first was a black '00 fixed roof. The '00 was sold to a friend ~15 years ago but is still local. Both C5s are head and cam cars. I help a friend keep his white '00 fixed roof on track (HPDE/streetcar) and we are restoring his new project, a 50th with a darton sleeved LS6 block now at 428 cubes with a D1 procharger to keep it fun (another that should have been a youtube channel). My Z06 and the 50th were stable mates as we bought the cars when a friend who had them retired to sunny California. Yes the seats and shifter in a C5 suck. My Z06 and the 50th are running Carravagio seats (sp?) they pop up used. I may sell mine, they look like Porsche GT3 seats which come up more on your hip than their more common fixed back seat that accept a Recaro bezel for the 5pt harness slots in the shoulder area. People have also swapped in Misubishi Evo seats, S2000 seats, C6, and C7 seats. Corbeau A4s are common as are Sparco R100s. The Carravagios I have are a bit narrow for me at a 36in waist but Sparco R100s are too wide, All of the seat swaps mentioned are documented on Corvetteforum. The shifter is easy to change with many options. If you ever change the clutch always inspect the torque, disassemble it and check the couplers, and bearings. Also add a remote clutch bleeder. You're smart and good with a wrench, the C5 is a relatively simple car, has flaws but is rather logical to work on. The C5 can be a fun car for you to drive and improve. You may know much of this but it may help someone considering a C5 down the road.

Hey Jake, awesome buy. I can't wait to see how this progresses. For my vote, I'd like to see a 'build on a budget' type deal. Like maybe an upgraded clutch/shifter and since the suspension is toast anyway, perhaps a cheap-ish suspension upgrade. Maybe a 'new' set of seats from another car that fit in the Vette. Nothing too crazy but enough to make it special. Good luck!

That's a steal. I picked up a 04 C5 manual last year for dirt cheap (not $9500 cheap) with 80k miles and absolutely love it. Such a great platform with a massive aftermarket.

I'm in the same boat. Before the pandemic the C5s were going for 8k to 12k and the C6s were going for 13k to 17k. The infiniti q50 now is around 13k to 21k and you can do a few bolt ons and be in the low 11s to high 10s easily on the 3.0T models.

Nice C5. To me it is the last of the decent looking Corvettes. Then again, I'm old. I remember when the Corvette had chrome bumpers front and back. There truly is something lovely about a car that can cruise effortlessly at 1,500 rpm. My 89 Grand Marquis 5.8 litre was like that. The performance back axle was a 2.73:1 Traction Lok. The miles just rolled by. GM seats are crap. Have been since about 1980. Before that they were so so. Looking forward to Corvette fun. I had to skip the V10 Beemer. The drone of that exhaust was actually painful.

There's nothing wrong with OEM head units, especially in vettes...and you can buy these OEM units with aux or Bluetooth built into them. OEM or OEM plus is the way to go. Unless you like hacking shit up.

Factory head units are great, and there are SO many interfaces and transmitters to hook your phone up to the radio. I still buy and listen to CDs and cassettes. I don't do digital media shit. There is NOTHING that will sound better than a physical album. Digital media quality sucks. And im getting tired of seeing him wear headphones while driving. That's highly illegal, especially noise cancelling ones. but I guess Kansas drivers and all KZbinrs don't have to abide by the law. I don't even upgrade speakers anymore. I buy new OEM speakers and I add a small subwoofer for bass. I used to do the whole car audio thing back in my teenage and high school days, but I appreciate original equipment way more now than I used to. I appreciate everything more than I used to all those years ago.

I can't help feel that some of the criticism of GM is a little unfair. It's a 25 year old car so yeah, it should need shocks. C5 Corvettes have always been a terrific performance buy. In case you don't already know, the C5 with a 6 speed manual come with a lower 3.41:1 rear gear than the automatic equipped C5. Great purchase!

I own a 2000 GMC and you need to replace all the seals on your AC to get it so you can recharge your unit. And, The gas gage issue seems to be an issue. That being said you need to drop the gas tank and replace your fuel pump.

The car had it's own diagnostic system built in. It tells you all the codes on the dash and if its old or new. You can also clear them.

Funny....how folks from one state view others. I'm a life long Texan. I was in Arkansas near TX and got pulled over. I had flown into Little Rock and drove to Hot Springs. I was coming into Hot Springs from the south on hwy 6. Got pulled over by a Cop hiding in the trees on a nice swoopy S curve. Was in a rental Monte Carlo. Was going like 75 in a 55. I didn't realize it had TX tags on it. He said as he was walking up the to car "You dam Texans drive 75 everywhere". We ended up BS-ing for a bit and I ended up with a warning. I'd say the majority do if you have spent time on I-20. Going 90 is not "zooming through traffic. You might actually get passed. I wish I had started saving them earlier, but its a life long goal of mine to get a speeding ticket in every state in the US. I've got many in the bank so far.

This C5 is probably my second favourite type of Corvette. Overall performance and quality just skyrocketed from the genuinely atrocious C4, the serviceability and dynamics are just right. I have every confidence that it'll do the 1000 miles no problem, and you could probably replace a hose and top up the AC from a parts shop of your choice and fix it for another 50,000 miles. Yeah, I have terrible taste because the C4 is my favourite Corvette. I'm just a slut for 80's styling, and there is no saving me.
