I decided to buy the cheapest pool cue I could find on Amazon with a top of the line pool cue. I compare the Shane Van Boening Cuetec Cynergy 15k with a Viper Signature Amazon special. Is all the extra money worth, or is this Viper a hidden gem?

I was pool club president at my college so I have a lot of experiences with new players buying new cues. Here are some tips, If ur thinking about buying a cue but don't know what price range to go for, here is my breakdown. Anything under 200 dollars is just garbage for a playing cue, you will experience problems if you play a lot and as you get better, you will want to upgrade ASAP. This is for players who play once a month with their friend and has no interest in improvement. between 200-400 comes most of the price-efficient cues like Lucasi, Cuetec and players. These cues perform well, but are more generic. If you're an aspiring player who wants to improve, getting one of these and sticking with it for a while will see you get used to the cue and become a better player due to adjusting for English and such. The 400+ cues, I have a Mezz myself that I got for 600, are top of the line cues. Pros use these cues MEzz, Peri, Predator, Meucci etc, these are cues that perform as well as any cue in the world and you can't blame anything but yourself if you miss a shot. These are obviously very nice cues but I'd say you have significant diminishing returns once you get above that 400 range. If you are a serious player and you consider pool to be your top hobby and you will put in a lot of work on the tables, then get one of these cues. If ur just buying one because you think your friends have nice cues and ur rich too, don''t get one. P.S: Carbon Fiber shafts and cues are the new wave obviously, they allow you to adjust minimally for English which makes a lot of shots easier. But if you ever play with a Carbon fiber, you'll notice they lack a feedback that is exclusive in wood shafts. I think newer players wanting to take a shortcut and get better just by getting a carbon fiber, you have another thing coming to ya because that's not gonna work and you're going to play like shit with carbon fiber. Understand the game, understand how to play the game then focus on equipment. If you cannot runnout a rack of 9 ball or you know you lack positional play, you need to PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE! Equipment is a secondary issue that only is relevant at a high competitive level.

What a great video. I’ve always wondered how a cheap cue played in the hands of a pro. The new Cuetecs are so nice! I want one badly. I have Cuetecs from back in the day, (2002-2005) and I liked them ok, but these new ones with the carbon fiber shafts are a whole new world of preciseness. Thanks for this video!

You can work around the warp by making a mark on the shaft and holding it in the same spot each time. The balance could be addressed by taking some weight out of the butt, or adding some below the joint. The cue tip is likely behind the difference in spin ability.

Question...I'm a little more than a beginner, but I'm nowhere near on the level of a Cuetec...that being said, qustion...what's the difference between a cue that less than $100 vs a Cue above $100 to $175? Can anyone answer this for me? I'm looking at a Scorpion Cue HD for about $115, but If I choose the Kamui tip, it's around $150 for everything. What does the gallery think?
@dsgsecondspice1998
@dsgsecondspice1998 6 ай бұрын
@RobertSpiller honestly it's more about preference and cosmetics. A good players or Vikings stick is just as good as a cuetech. The best thing to do is learn what you like through playing. My first cue was a mcdermott lucky cue. I wouldn't recommend amazon for buying cues just because Amazon doesn't always have top quality shipping practices in my experience. I would use Ozone billiards, Pool dawg or Seyberts for ordering a cue online if no local retailers are available. I'd look into whether or not you like a thicker (13mm) or thinner (11.75mm) shaft or somewhere in the middle (12.5mm) For tips, I'd recommend a medium tip to start. Too many people get distracted by trying to put side spin and if they have a soft tip, they might more of a learning curve since you can get slightly more english on the ball. Ultimately, you can add a tip of your choice but I'd recommend the elkmaster brand if it's in your budget. Lastly, I'd look at if you want a wrap on your cue (rubber, linen or leather) if you do, make sure that you are aware of how much grip your wrap adds. Hope that helps.

During my best years of playing pool which was around 2001-2004, I was using a $12 cue, the butt is damn ugly and is all nicked up but I loved the taper and the balance of it. Now, I'm using an LD shaft but I can honestly say that I shoot better with my old cue.

FYI, my very first cue I ever bought was a burgundy Viper in 1997. I think it was $60.00 at a sports shop. Still have it to this day, although I never played with it anymore. But back then it was straight as an arrow and hit like a ton of bricks. Used it in pool league and won countless games with it. Great cue actually for a beginner.

Great video. I have 30+ cues ranging from $100 Players to $1500 Schon LTD w/ a Jacoby EH Ultra Super Pro...so many different weights/overall lengths/balance points/grip types/joint material/joint pins/piloted vs flat-faced/pro vs euro vs conical shaft tapers/LD- vs traditional maple shafts/layered vs non-layered tips/shaft diameters (my arsenal ranges from a 9.5mm Snooker cue --> 11.56mm Meucci 30" UW --> to 13mm Joss maple traditional, and everything in the middle). I rotate between all of my cues every few games because it just makes playing more interesting to me (unfortunately I've had like 2 hours of table time in the last 5 or so weeks), and I never have an issue adjusting to any of them. Of course I prefer some cues over others, the actual play doesn't change too much between any of them. Complete side note, but related to tips and your mention of $20-25 Kamui. I currently have/or used 6-7 Kamui tans in medium (mostly on all my Mezz WX-900s) and at least 6-8 Kamui blacks, in both medium and soft. If I had to choose Kamui, I'd always go with the tan/brown versions personally...they don't glaze over as much as the black leather versions in my experience. However, my tip of choice for performance and the best price are Ultraskins (mediums for me, in both black and ivory) and they are like $7 each retail, and are even cheaper (believe $3 each) if you buy through a guy/poster on AZb. I replace my tips by hand/no lathe and the Ultraskins I installed on three of my shafts that had old tips are so amazing, and glaze much less than Kamui blacks and a less than Kamui tans. My first experience with this tip came on my Meucci JS-S with The Pro shaft...fell in love, have got 3 others Moochs since then -- all with this stock tip -- and all play excellent. Likely have a dozen of new Ultraskins waiting to be put on the next shaft that needs a new one. Just my opinion.

regarding the balance point, the viper probably came with weights in the back. based on your results, i have always found it questionable if there is even a difference between cue butts. i have examined balance points myself and they all feel similar. your money feels better off going into the shaft, but it makes me wonder if the cue butt _could_ be improved at all.

Believe it or not, the first part of the shaft (tip and ferrule) 2 inches down is what counts the most.. In other words if you have a good tip and the cue feels good in your hand and the shaft is straight (tip are and down by 2-3 inches) then it should play good assuming your stroke is right and you stand right.. I collect alot of cues, and I mean alot ( I have a fetish for wood and designs, kinda like art in some cases).. out of all the cues I own, the cue I play league with and it plays like a champ is a sneaky pete from "Pure X technologies" with a skinny "11.75" shaft with a Zan Grip Hard tip.. total spent was under $125 at the time from Seyberts.. Yes it has a lifetime warranty against warpage! Man let me tell ya, I can make that cue ball dance and pocket my object ball(s) with no issues.. It plays and feels as good as my Revo (when I play with it), its just a cheap beat around cue, looks nice and feels nice.. Love the content, stay safe and keep playing, and I just subbed...

I need cue recommendations! I've been an inconsistent player for the past few years using house cues. I'm getting a little better at cue ball control, but my current approach is to simply outshoot my opponents. Much like Kobe Bryant in basketball, I end up taking a lot of difficult shots. I actually find it fun to play that way since my opponents don't break and run, so I get enough opportunities to shoot. I played a guy 1/13/2023 for about 7 hours. He had his own break and shooting cue and of course I played with house stick. He did outplay me overall, but all of our games were competitive. Based on beating someone like that more than a few times, I think it's time I got my own cue. So I'd like specific recommendations, not just brand names, please. Anyone...

The viper stick could possibly be your break stick maybe using the heaviest available and you would not have to bother with the house stick. Hot pink is the perfect color knowing you won’t grab the wrong stick to break and some low life would probably not want to steal your break stick.

Very nice video. Mass in motion stays in motion, this is why most people play with 19+ oz cues like the Viper you purchased (pro tip: stop muscling your shots and let the cue do the work for you) but you could pull the rubber butt out and replace the weight out for one an ounce less to improve balance issues. My advice to fix the warping and deflection issue only applies to someone that purchased an inexpensive cue mostly for the design or imagery. Get a non-deflection cue shaft and put the same Kamui Soft tip on it, should cost around $125.00-$150.00. A new shaft can turn any garage find into a deadly weapon on the tables.

I have one with a small steel wood to wood piloted joint. It's crooked, the joints aren't matched and the butt end looks like Birchwood, which is cheaper and lighter than Maple wood. Despite these flaws I have won $ with it. One of the better hitting cheap cues on the market.

@@WorldofPoolandBilliards I can. I have 5 cheap Chinese cues and a few medium level American cues and this is the best hitting stick of all of them. It has a cheap Atlas Fiber ferrule at 1 and 1/8 inch which is important on a softer ferrule material and a 1$ Lepro tip I sanded on it.

This is funny. I almost always shoot for hours with a house cue. The biggest factor is tip hardness and shape. I could shoot with a crooked tree branch if the tip is right. I am a bit like W.C. Fields in that respect. My shooting intimidates folks.

Hi, to start off, I admire the quality of content you upload, interested in the game and as an absolute amateur i bought myself for christmas a Players C-806 cue, to have something to practice on. It isn't the best cue possible, but i still felt the change dramatically when swapping from house cue to improve on my game. Is it reasonable to change the tip of my cue to something better, since mine now is really flat, and if so which one would you prefer for a intermediate/beginner.
@mahdhatre

If you are used to and/or like the current tip, get a shape tool. As a beginner you'll probably want the "nickel" shape, which matches the curve of a nickel, or dime. With dime shape, your cueing imperfections will be more pronounced and it will be more difficult to hit center ball. With that said a tip losing shape in 4 months is either trash, or its very soft and you're hitting too hard. To actually answer your question, start with a medium. I wouldnt empty your wallet for one until you know which tip works best for you.

Nice review. I agree with pretty much everything you said. I personally think something like a $60 McDermott or equivalent is probably a better first cue choice. They are dead straight, stay that way with proper care, and come with a reasonably good tip, usable anyway. I think mine also included a one cue soft case, not the best, but better than nothing. Maybe for a kid just starting out, OK, but for someone that actually wants to start progressing, I'd say spend the extra $40 and get something usable for a year or two. Just my two cents. I upgraded mine after the first tip wore out with a Kamui tip, and eventually bought a lightly used Z2 that had been worked by a cue technician from ebay with the new kamui tip installed for $140. Cue is just fine for me, now. Not gorgeous, but it works great, essentially for $200, all up. Butts not that important, shaft is much more so, and probably a close second (to a usable, not a junk tip) is the tip upgrade, MHO. You play at a higher level than I do, by a good bit, even at my best, but I was getting there. One thing I thought of is if this cue is weighted very heavily (don't remember) you could maybe remove some of the weight and get the CG a bit better if you didn't mind a lighter overall cue. I agree that that much aft weighting would probably drive someone nuts that was short and whose grip hand was closer the the front of the wrap. It would almost negate open bridge play in that case, you definitely don't want to be trying to hold the cue down from the back grip, that would destroy your stroke. For a taller person, probably not all that much of an issue. The straightness at that amount of warp, not all that concerning for shooting, especially if you mark the cue and to make it so in your shooting position the bend isn't on the same plane as the table surface (in other words the bend is up and down, and not left and right), but not good in that it speaks to overall quality, I think, and I agree with your concern for down the road possible increased warpage.

@@WorldofPoolandBilliards Yeah, it's kind of like in F1, where if you can get an extra one or two tenths of a second in a lap from setup it is HUGE. For your street rod, you would NEVER even notice the difference. To somebody like Efren, or SVB, or Pagulayan, etc. a minor difference between two cues, or tips, or whatever probably jumps right out at them. To somebody just starting out, pretty much no difference whatsoever, as long as stick is reasonably serviceable. I can almost guarantee one of those guys could beat me all day long using a BROOM, some of them probably with the business end of it. :-/

Great players play with whatever cue pays them the most. Now I'm not saying that LD shafts and cues aren't worth it but let's be honest $509 to $600 gets you the top performance for shaft and or cue. Most anything beyond that is just cosmetic. New carbon fiber stuff might be higher though.

If someone has a good stroke and knowledge of the game, and the cue is relatively straight, they can play fairly well with any cue but most certainly a more expensive cue is typically better quality (in general) and is a much more pleasant experience to play with. This cheap cue vs. a higher priced one is nothing new. And $599 is actually fairly cheap for a good cue.

Pool is a lot about the skill and not so much about the equipment which is nice. Also I would much rather choose a very good table than a very good cue, having cushions with inconsistent bounce, too fast or too slow cloth or pockets that don't accept any more power on the shot can be very annoying. Average or low end cue is more than enough for most of the players.
