Have you actually owned one and paid for all these kind of repairs? Makes me cringe at the prices Matt quotes here. If it was built better in the first place, maybe half of these items wouldn't cost a fortune to fix. But that's the plan all along I guess. If you can afford one new, you won't care less about repair costs I imagine. Not a car for everyday Joe Bloggs

It’s cheap because they are unreliable expensive to maintain cars. The only way I would own one if I could afford it would be a brand new one after winning the lottery. @@leevweleevwe4813 I wouldn't say so. People in the UK are way too quick to get turned off on high mileage diesel cars when stupid low mileage diesels are probably mechanically worse off. It would cost 5-8k more to get one with half the mileage but there's not 5-8k difference mechanically.

The interior is also quite a choice but like you, I don't hate it. What always interests me is I have the 2012 L322 4.4TDV8 Westminster which was one of the final runs they did before the L405. It always makes me smile how much I have in mine as standard which means it still holds it's own today. That and the L322 design is timeless! But crikey Matt - I say again - what a find buddy!

Great video and nice to see a positive review, most Range Rover reviews are enough to put buyers off. People have to remember that typically it's the lack of proper maintenance that brings the unreliability issues, this L405 has been properly looked after and as a result you only had a low fuel warning. I'm sat at the lower end with an old 3.0 L322 Vogue. It's perfect for my needs, I look after it and it looks after me. Think I will stick to my 62 plate L322, it has only done 87K miles so should be OK for several years yet. It is a must to keep money back for repairs, mine is a tow car, nearly 2 ton caravan and 2.5 ton loaded trailer, in fact I would say that 50% of my miles are towing. Averaged just over 25mpg last year so for a big car and considering how I use it that was not too bad. As for break downs I have only had to replace a windscreen wiper motor, which at £350 was bad enough, all else has been standard wear and tear. Although the high level rear brake light has stopped working and getting into it is a plastic cover off job and I always break the retention clips so not looking forward to that job. Good video though, I suspect as you already intimated this car has been towing heavily loaded horse boxes hence all the wear on the suspension system and breaks. Keep up the good work.

That’s why u need deep pockets to run of these coz after a certain number of years when they go wrong they go wrong and u will fork out a lot of money to fix it when it does go wrong.

Must. Not. Spend. Life. Savings. On. Raffle. Tickets. But that's a real bargain for a lovely truck. Just shows though how regular servicing etc really prolongs the life of a car. I've been taking your advice with my cheapo L320. Had immediate gearbox service and all other oils and filters etc. Now got her booked for body off. Get everything that can go wrong sorted before it does go wrong. And corrosion proofing. That is a big outlay compared to the original cost of the vehicle. But I'm adopting your approach of just considering the total price. By the end I'll be into her for around £5K; inc the 1700 I paid for her. There are quite a few nice L320s on autotrader for around that price; but they'd still be risky. But this way, for the same price, I end up with a near mint truck that has a good 70,000 miles left on her at least. I will now though be rushing forward the tyre purchase. Never occurred to me what my ill-assorted Chinese Labour Camp Pirelli clones were doing to the diffs.

Nice looking motor, but parts start to add up...think the letters are around £3 each...spare wheel new is £300 plus, tyres are £160 each maybe more....mirror surround in the glovebox? They are nice motors, but you need to budget for pricey servicing and maintenance.

I saw something in the news about a big car dealership going bust part of the reason given by the company owner for going bust was , paying out £190 odd grand in warranty claims on land rover vehicles. They claimed that jaguar/land rover are very unreliable and expensive to fix .......... I'd still love one tho 👍😂💰

I had a friend in San Diego had one of these. It would have been an early 2000s model. He said it was an expensive nightmare. He had a factory just across the border in Mexico and had to drive back and forth every day.

If suspension parts often need replacing it's not because "it's a heavy car", but because the manufacturer didn't make them strong / heavy enough.

Like the video, although I'm not a range rover fan, much prefer an old defender. One thing I don't understand, is why put skinny tyres on a off road vehicle, it doesn't make sense.

Obviously what made this car such a bargain was the fact that the previous owner had been willing to spend as much money on it as it needed to keep it running properly. It just needed new tyres and some minor cosmetic work and it was job done which I bet was a refreshing change for you! A lovely car and a great prize for someone - sadly I don't think I could afford the running costs though🙁

Having spent nearly 4K on gear box re build suspension and belts on my 2008 Discovery 3 I get it, my car was 10.5k 5 years ago, probably in total spent 6.5k on service mot tyres and repairs in last 5 years, but have done over 100k miles in it around Germany, France,Spain,Italy,Hungary,Slovakia,Austria, and Switzerland, and UK with 6 up and all our luggage etc. Was a Godsend during Covid when flying was difficult. They are cheap to buy but you need to spend to keep Land Rovers tip top, mine has never let me down love the driving position and average just over 30mpg. Two of the big babies have now left the nest so I don’t need the 7 seats so much anymore maybe just occasionally for younger relatives, I have the solution Scott seats do a rear facing seat conversion for the L405 like the old merc estates for about £1300. So just need a £5 raffle ticket and get the conversion done Bobs your Uncle. Amazing video Matt love the car whoever wins will absolutely love it. Who ever knew you could order a extra size washer bottle what a great option. Keep the Videos coming you should be on Top Gear.

Well thanks to you, I bought my L494 a few months ago. It’s an AB and even higher miles than this and I do a lot of miles, some might think that’s just recipe for disaster but hasn’t missed a beat and I service my own cars so it didn’t put me off. Please feature more of these on channel. I did find the channel when you released the grey RRS video by the way.

Btw; A common fault with all 405's are door sensors. Alarms going off for no apparent reason & refusal to lock, faults on dash' etc. Dealerships will charge around £180 per sensor or complete mechanism replacement. Don't bother. Simply spray WD40 (or similar product) behind the door catch every 6 months. It acts as a basic contact cleaner. The door seals aren't great & let dust in. You'll notice they freeze shut in winter.

Mat, if you ever wanted to put someone off buying that Range Rover, hearing how much cash it’s munched through, I certainly would not be putting my cash that direction. Why would you ever buy something that needed all that work doing when it was younger in years? What are the next 5 years going to bring? Dual view (so the passenger can watch to as you scroll to call the AA) isn’t going to close the deal. So what are you going to do with it? Do what you usually do, it a good detail clean and call your scrap guy!

I've an electric towbar on my volvo, pointless overengineering of the highest order, broke after virtually no use, ended up needing the control module replaced twice and making a mess of all the safety software. Would never have one again, avoid them like the plague.
