The ignition key is between the seats so that you don't hurt your knee in an accident. There is a button labeled "blackpanel" in the dashboard that switches off all the lights of the buttons and instruments except the speedo, so you are not distracted while driving in the dark. Then if there is something that needs your attention, that gauge will light up or a warning light will turn on.

Yes, the NG 9-5 and the 9-4X were the last 2 new models that the brand released, but like @batelmo2779 mentioned, 9-3 production lasted under Saab until 2012. Even when NEVS bought them and they were no longer allowed to use the Saab name a few 9-3's were still produced up until 2014 I believe with the NEVS name. 2011 was the last year we got them stateside though after Spyker unfortunately failed to keep them afloat. By that point the damage GM had caused the brand was just too much.

My mom used to own a 2007 Saab 9-5 aero with the 2.3 turbo, also wagon. Despite being very nice and practical, I'm so glad she eventually got rid of it. Roughly 80.000 miles on it but reliability and parts availability were starting to become a nightmare. The drivetrain was actually solid but everything else was failing, what an endless money pit. Coolant leaks, valve cover gasket leaks, front main seal. Endless electrical problems: ECU failed and replaced, ABS sensors good luck replacing all 4 of them (remember those come as a full assembly with the wheel bearings), random electrical drains leaving her stranded every few months with a dead battery. Electric rear view mirrors not working. Serpentine belt because one of the pulleys had failed. Replaced it last year with a brand new end of production run lexus rx450h.

Love it to pieces no matter how often or how little qt times I have to look at each of those pieces (daily driving a 180k like car, all that normal stuff) and I'm making about 400awhp with e85 and a few mods you could almost completely ignore. If I swapped airboxes back to stock and threw the engine cover on, you'd think I had a basically bone stock car. Despite the power and all the upgrades I've done, it's still a completely comfortable, usable car that gets me mile after mile.

Turbocharged engines are now commonplace, and people sometimes forget that Saab was an early pioneer when it introduced the 99 Turbo in the late 70's. Saab wasn't the first car company to introduce a turbocharged engine, but Saab was one of the first to bring turbocharging to the masses.

@quintonulm2435 Жыл бұрын
1) Change your transmission fluid often or you will get shift flares and eventually roach out the trans. 2) Make sure your timing chains are in good health because that is not cheap to fix when they stretch 3) Keep an extra coil pack or two in the trunk, that cramped engine bay likes to cook them things pretty well. 4) Replace the coolant reservoir by the firewall on the drivers side before it blows up 5) Always have at least two keys 6) Try to get yourself a Tech2 with security access or you will most likely be dead in the water when trying to diagnose electrical faults or modules

It won’t come back. SAAB proper is a Swedish defence and aerospace company whose automotive branch was sold to GM, who , in turn, sold it to Dutch scam company Spyker. Spyker robbed whatever of value was left and left SAAB automobile to die. SAAB corp have clearly signalled that they will not allow any new company rising from the ashes of old SAAB auto (or coming from elsewhere) to use the SAAB name and brand on their products. Good to see a review on the 93 estate, I have one of the last 2011 93X in the UK its getting rare to see them and to me it's the perfect all rounder car, it's got the boot size, very comfortable seats driving position, good turbos but the most surprising thing is the stiffness of the chassis, because Saab made these like a solid cage tank you can really confidently use the power through bends, satisfying on a good A road. I'm very happy with the setup especially considering the fact I bought it almost accidetnally. And I think it's worth mentioning - the fuel consumption is really decent (well, at least for my setup), it consumes 6 on a highway and around 11-11.5 in the city. Which is super important here in EU (I live in Spain). Surprisingly, still can be serviced without any visible issues, all parts & consumables are on the market. True and Saab might have died even sooner if GM hadn’t injected some cash into it.
@Carluvr2011 Жыл бұрын
@bt5252 it is possible that they could've. I don't think it's a secret that Saab was already hurting financially by the time GM had stepped in, but at the end of the day it wasn't that Saab didn't have interested buyers either. GM wanted to sell the brand after the 08 recession rather than close it like it had already decided to do with Oldsmobile and Pontiac. Ford was doing the same thing at the time with all of the brands in their portfolio to avoid taking a government bailout, but while Ford found successful buyers for all of its brands (with the exception of Mercury which they chose to close), GM was extremely picky and selective with who they wanted to sell too, for how much, and whether or not they were willing to give away their patent rights and naming rights to the brand. I think the brand could've been saved if GM had been more willing to work with the offers that were on the table at the time, but that's just my 2 cents on it. It could also be argued too however, that the Swedish government could've stepped in to help save the brand in a similar fashion to the U.S. auto bailout, but they didn't. At the end of the day though it still changes nothing lol.

My name’s Laura, and I’m a Saabaholic. Bought in ‘02, my ‘99 “OG” 9-3 cv 5spd is still my daily driver.* When it was almost 18, I drove x-country LA to Boston in four days, and in Feb. ‘24, it will be 25 yrs-old. Lots of us love the “newer” models, like this NG 9-3, as much as the classic old ones. While I may be biased, though, I don’t see too many 25 yr-old Volvos, Audis, or BMWs (esp. not the cv’s) still on the roads year-round today. Saabs were built for longevity over profit, to our benefit and the brand’s detriment. Saab may not have sold a lot of cars, but for a brand that’s been gone longer than a decade, it still has a loyal following. As long as these cars are maintained, w/parts and specialists aplenty, plus a supportive community, they’re the most reliable and safest cars on the road. In some ways, Saab was the Boeing of its time, run by engineers who were pathological about safety (“we make cars, not compromises”), but w/an obviously much different importance and outcome. As for GM, I think they kept Saab going longer than it would’ve lasted by itself. The cars lost some of the Saabishness, though not all of it. My theory is that GM did what they then did best, market and product-place the hell out of them, why for such a niche brand, you’ll see so many Saabs featured in film/TV. It’s a shame Koenigsegg couldn’t have saved the brand earlier, but I don’t think our cars are going away anytime soon. In times of so much uncertainty, a Saab just feels SOLID. *Mine’s the base model b204 engine, but w/MapTun S2, it’s been bumped up from 185 to ~240hp - and lots more fun.

Not related to the Opel Astra. Built on the GM Epsilon platform, but apparently with lots of changes.

Still rocking my 2006 combi. It may not have much longer and quirky as quirky gets but if they still made them I’d buy one tomorrow. Nice vid, guys.

Used to own a 1993 Saab 900 Turbo 16S. Now on a 2005 93 2.0 turbo. Great car. Still built like tanks! Tak.

The contract for selling a company to GM should be referred to as a suicide note.

Yea. Try getting parts and service for this car. Do your research. The ignition was put in the center stack to prevent the key from smashing your right knee during a front end collision.

My dream car, I owned one last year and I totaled it due to road conditions. It was the most reliable car I’ve ever owned and felt amazing.

I agree with Nathan that GM destroyed Saab… At the end they were just rebadged GM models and had lost most of what made Saab a Saab. Also to clarify one thing Nathan mentioned: Saab still makes planes. Before GM the cars and planes were the same company, but they were eventually split with GM taking ownership of the automobile company. The Saab name is still owned by Saab AB (the airplane company). Those who follow the history of Saab Automobile know that, post-GM bankruptcy, NEVS had officially licensed the name to continue the brand but lost it. It would be great to see the brand re-emerge someday.

I always loved Saabs. I owned a 900 and a 9000. A 9.3 Sport Combi would be awesome!

The newer generation Volvo V60s are a great replacement for the Saab. Very quick, super good looking and plenty of space in the back.

As a long time Saab owner who has dealt with all the quirks and maintenance and reliability issues, I don't envy you guys. With the shrinking number of Saab specialist mechanics and specialty parts being hard to find (expensive if you can find them), I would never buy an old Saab now. Sure common consumables are easy to get from Rockauto, but expect the car to be a money pit with all the old rotten suspension bushings and mounts needing to be replaced, and your ECU eventually dying, and lots of stupid interior stuff breaking like automatic door locks that don't work. The 2.8T V6 is also something I'd never get - super cramped and hot engine bay, and bad city fuel economy. The 2.0T 4cyl is easier to work on and more efficient on the highway, but even that engine has its fair share of issues. I love Saabs, but never again.

The Turbo V6 was epic though.

@@0HOON0 i fully agree - sweet power. But I wouldn't want to deal with maintaining it.

Long-time Saab lover and owner, but just so you know guys, the desirable 2.8T 9-3 is called the TurboX, not the 9-3X. The 9-3X is a standard 2.0T 9-3 Wagon with different body cladding and XWD (Saab's AWD). I've owned my '08 Saab 9-3 SportCombi 2.0T, 6spd manual for almost 7 years without any major issues. I'm at 167,000 miles and it still runs perfectly - the seats are damn near perfect still. The only major issue I had was to replace the clutch, which when I replaced it at 160,000 miles, isn't abnormal for any vehicle. There is a little known upgrade you can use with factory parts from other GM's where you can essentially build a "Stage 2" clutch for 1/3 the cost. I bought it July 2017 for $6000 from a dealership with 119,000 miles; best vehicle I've ever owned, even better than the 2017 VW Jetta 1.4T that I bought for $17,000. My 9-3 has stood the test of time and fun fact, my wagon was on the RCR video where the thumbnail says "Lie to Me."

Hell yeah Saab! I have a ‘94 900 with a 5-speed. These are absolutely collectible now. I think they will grow to be more popular and desirable as time goes on. Even though GM put their hands deep into Saabs pot, I still think they’re awesome cars. I also drive a Colorado, so I don’t mind GM flavor.

I know mostly about older Saabs, the T7 and down. However, for the modern ones, as I know the V6 is a horrendous engine to work on and changing the timing chain, it's just better to buy a new car because of how expensive it is to change.

B50 "premium leather" option. That was the best interior available for the 9-3.

10:26 Nathan, I get the resentment, but if GM hadn’t taken over, Saab would have been out of business 15-20 years earlier.

A family friend of ours had the previous generation model with a manual transmission and I believe she had it for over 10 years. Unfortunately it became more of a challenge to find parts for it as Saab ceased to exist.
