I am super happy that Lor says what she does about the cost of lolita, I used to be extremely active as a lolita when I was 13-16 I would follow brands religiously and memorise print names, I would make mood boards of my dream co-ords and stick them all over my room (which was entirely pastel pink) but I couldn't afford it, the shipping alone was too much for me. So because I knew how to sew I just started making my JSKs my self and only ever splurging on blouses and accessories when I could afford it. I was super proud of my wardrobe because every piece I had was unique to my collection. However, when I was 16 and become more comfortable going to proper meetups as lolita was becoming a pretty large part of my life I went to a tea party and this whole group of girls I'd never seen at smaller meetups were there and one of them was wearing my dream dress at the time (which was Milky Swan JSK if anyone cares) and I went up to her to compliment her dress and just to introduce myself. They scowled at me and kept asking what brand my JSK was from and when I told them I made it they were super weird with me and basically wouldn't talk to me for the rest of the tea party. I kept having experiences similar to this one because of this group of girls that were seemingly obsessed with brand and by the end of that year, I decided I wasn't rich enough to be in the community and I sold all my stuff to my friends. I'm 21 now and really wish I had kept it all, I don't wear lolita anymore I still think it's a beautiful fashion style I think I've just moved away from that world too much to re-enter it again. I do just want to say that if all you can afford is bodyline or to make your own lolita then you wear it! and treasure it! You don't need brand to be a real lolita or to look amazing. Just wear what you can attain and what makes you happy

Always be mindful who you take advice from, lovelylor has a lot of great videos on how to access this fashion so definitely a good resource if you’re starting out. I actually bought this dress because it was cheap and cute. I still like it tbh. I agree with everything you said, and I learned it's important to research. 💀
@oshynlints41134 жыл бұрын
Alright, so I actually bought this dress in blue, as my first "lolita" dress. I bout it some time ago when I was 13-14, and even though I see now after getting a few more dresses that its not a proper lolita dress (and after seeing that it's a replica), I still like it and keep it in my wardrobe for more casual wear. Its something that I don't feel I have to worry about running around in since it was so cheap. If anyone likes a piece of clothing, they shouldn't have to feel bad about wearing it, even if they didn't know everything about said clothes before hand. Most of the time I feel like its how the whole outfit comes together in the end is what is important. But this dress for me was what I used to see if I actually wanted to fully commit to the style. I am in no way saying that anyone should buy it with out research or understanding, I'm just saying I think its ok for any one person to enjoy what they want to. I've actually had another dress of mine that I love be called "trash" and "bad quality" since the brand I bought it from wasn't very reputable. I felt like I wasn't allowed to wear it anymore because it was "wrong". That is never true. I feel happy in it, and so I'm not going to let people tell me how to feel instead. Be you, and wear what makes you feel like yourself.
@Naranylla4 жыл бұрын

Then of course my parents forced me to share it with my brother, and bought him his own a couple months later to stop the fighting. 😭 Like, I'm a true girly-girl, but I hated how my brothers were always given the autonomy of cash to pick what they want and were gifted videogames while I had to scrimp for them from nothing and take their rejected, often broken, leftovers. @@redhoodxdp8568 Lol It's just the reality of being a low-income household and gender socialization. In abstract, those things hardly change in a lifetime, if that. There was no "falling on hard times." It's just our lives, and the way some people live. Both my parents are disabled and live on a fixed income. My mom was supposed to be sterile from two rounds of chemotherapy. There is no chance of improving one's economic conditions in that situation. And because you don't know any different, you don't register it as "bad." You have to learn that comparison over time, and how to feel about it. So, please don't feel bad for me for not having an allowance and being able to buy dresses. Having food on the table and a coat in winter was more important. I understood this and did not hold that against my parents. I am an adult who works now. I don't make much money at present, but with money, I have some more choices over my own life. :) I've a very humble lolita collection that's been growing for 8 years. It's comprised of one blouse, one skirt, an accidentally purchased replica I plan to modify, two pairs of shoes, a pair of socks, and three dresses, most of which were purchased within the last year and never at item over $80. Most were $30 or $60. That seems miniscule compared to BTSSB and AP prices, but you must understand the majority of my groceries come from the 99 cent store. None of these clothes are of very noteable brands but it's about how the clothes make me feel, and not the label on my back for me. I guess that is a blessing from my low-income background. Every piece I manage to get is afight towards and worth so much more to me. I do aspire to middle-class some day, and it's up to me to figure out how to get there. If it's not within my capacity, I have to remember it's not a moral failing. I don't have a model to follow, so "common sense" and resources taken for granted by those in other circumstances than mine I simply might not be privileged to. My parents could not work due to their disabilities for instance, so I never witnessed how an adult would balance a schedule and stressors associated with working. I was too scared to get a job for a long time because my parents told me if I did taxes wrong, I could go to jail, and they refused to help me with taxes because they never did them- having not worked. So, I was petrified. At one point the terror of continuing to live like this outweighed the terror of taxes. I am so glad to be working now, and so proud of what I do. 😊 And, every once in awhile when I can afford it, I get a special treat of ruffles and lace which makes me feel hundreds of times more valuable than its price. ♥️

I'm not into lolita fashion but there a few things I don't understand that I'm curious about. I used to have a friend that was into lolita but the community itself made her cry regularly. She was only a kid and people would harass her for wearing cheap but still legitimate dresses. They would regularly bully her for her coords and how cheap the brand was. She was also on forums that, from what I've seen, have mostly been bullying and judging people's outfits. I know that there are people who aren't like this, but for those who are; why? I understand the research, effort, years of saving and commitment that goes into being a lolita, and the sheer amount of work and talent that goes into making those dresses, so obviously I understand why buying replicas is a no go. But there are people that hate on others for wearing costumes or hand made lolita outfits. Why? When it's costumes, why not just leave them alone. Maybe they're trying it out for fun to see if they enjoy the alt style without the full commitment to something so expensive. Maybe someone's buying a costume as a gag, or for a party, or for their own form of escapism, or just to feel like a princess. I feel like policing what people wear (when it's not plagiarised work) is extremely ignorant, rude, and classist. It genuinely feels like a "let them eat cake" scenario, ironically. "oh they're not wearing authentic lolita dresses? Well they should get some". I just don't understand why you would ever be insulted by someone who expresses interest in your fashion. And when they don't take your advice on how to indulge better in the community then so what? Maybe that's too much commitment for them and they love the style but just want to have fun without making this a chore. Why do they have to be hardcore into it or not enjoy it at all? It's like saying you're not allowed to enjoy Harry Potter/enjoy the mercg if you haven't researched the full history of the universe and know what dumbledore's left testicle looks like. Maybe you just enjoy it cuz it's magic and makes you feel good. Let people enjoy themselves, and give them advice if you want, but take a step back and relax because not everyone thinks like you, and they don't deserve to be shamed, harassed and bullied for that, just because they wanted to have some innocent fun. I know this comment won't change anything but I just had to get it off my chest. I wish the community would just relax and not be so aggressive. In the end it literally is just a piece of fabric. You wouldn't bully someone for a cheap coat that they bought if they really liked it, saying that if it's not made by gucci then you're not allowed to dress in that style

I get that. But putting someone down because they don’t have the money to “correctly” dress the right way isn’t the same as buying slow fashion. :) I know people who do historical dressing or SCA which is picky about details, but in them there still are ways to make clothes or do the styles cheaper. In Lolita, it seems like you have to buy a $150-200 dress plus shipping from Japan and cross your fingers that their one size (which is a 9 with stretch? How does this fit everyone?) fits or if they have a plus size (size 12? 14?) that only ships to the US and may or may not fit my bust. See, I couldn’t be in this subculture because of this. Lolita used to be a subculture when I lived in Southern California, with the Lolitas dressing up, doing picnics, teas, cons, anime events and/or hanging out in Balboa Park. Maybe it’s all just the internet now? Anyway, I couldn’t take a $200 plus chance that any one size dress would fit me. I had one custom made once for about $80 but I would have probably got laughed out of any Lolita group. I guess my problem is laughing at people who honestly try and not including them.

I did my best to try and keep using it since then so it'd at least have use. It lasted fine. The headband bow wasn't included I think that was just from your store. The other bow had a safety pin sewn to it and that was the only thing that has come off so far. I definitely want to find a way to support better stores and recycle this dress when I have the chance. If you're not going to commit I advise you to go solo and just do whatever you want. the dress is already made and ready to sell if you're planning to wear it alot get it who cares. If you want quality get a legit one but as someone that would be happy because the item is cheap i'd just get it. Alternatively you can buy second hand obviously. the lolita community will act like you just committed the biggest crime ever (you did(in the community at least)) I've bought original and faked and the quality is FINE. so just think for yourself what you want.

@LovelyLor4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure. That's the terminology lolitas have picked up. It may have something to do with Japanese translation? The short explaination is that the fashion industry has different rules and regulations when it comes to copyright infringement. Rarely can a piece of clothing be copyrighted unless exceptionally characteristic to the brand, instead instructions on how to make the piece (sewing patterns, knitting patterns etc.) can be copyrighted. Don't worry if it doesn't make sense, I don't think its supposed to xD
@TheUchihaRin4 жыл бұрын
A proper replica would aim to use the same fabric and everything so it looks identical to the thing it's replicating. I agree they should be called knock offs
@Space_kiki04 жыл бұрын
@ the industry is a lawless place, any one can take anything and call it theirs as long as it’s been changed at least 10% from the original the only real copy rights are probably textile fabrication techniques, embroidery and prints but no one person can own dress design which is garbage but at the same time nothing is really new it’s a mess or recycled ideas but prints can absolutely be copy righted and owned i believe certain elements can be trademarked as well or people can keep their technique secret and take it to the grave like Fortuny did with the pleats no one has ever been able to relocate successfully. The world of counterfeiting is so vast and out of control it’s sadly something that will never be eradicated from any fashion world

So, when I was younger and first found lolita fashion (thank you, early 2010 alt tumblr) I was completely enamored. I fell in love with the fashion, however, lived in a household where this kind of loud self expression wasnt exactly acceptable. So, being young and dumb and having little income, as I was working at a stadium, I went to the website that I thought had everything: amazon. I, as a young idiot, just typed "lolita" into the search bar. Not only did I see listings for this dress, but everything seemed... off. I was confused as I didn't really grasp that a whole coord isnt just sold as a full coord. Eventually, however, I settled on a dress that was very sweet lolita, reminded me of candyland (the stock photo was stunning, I wish I knew the original brand that made it). When it arrived I was... disappointed. It was costume fabric, you know, that poly fabric that you cant iron, and goes stiff in places if you sit too long. It was hideous. The skirt was 2 layers, however, the second layer was practically tissue paper. I was so upset and humiliated by this experience that it turned me away from the community for YEARS. Please, if you're someone looking to wear lolita, do some more research than I did. It is much easier today to get good lolita fashions, which is wonderful, you just need to look for it. Leave the fast fashion sites alone, they're unreliable for alternative fashions and are not made to be durable.

I bought this dress several years ago on ebay before I knew any better. The stock images were the same, but the dress looked quite different than the one you received, though still pretty bad. It was obviously terrible for lolita, but I did end up using it for two different Halloween costumes, which worked out great. The first costume I wore was for a tv head outfit where I turned an old monitor into a head I could wear and spray painted it to match the dress. The second time I wore it, I covered it in dirt and threw on some fake blood to use for a broken doll costume. I was pretty mad that I had wasted my money on this dress initially, but I'm glad I was able to get some use out of it as least. I believe my sister still has the dress and occasionally uses it for different costumes and make up looks, though after washing it a few times, it did turn an odd shade of purple???? for some reason.

As a non lolita I just wanted to say, that I find your videos very rellaxing. And I always looking forward to see your outfits as I love the way you coordinate them. They can be inspirering for other styles as well. Thanks you for great content 😄

I think the saddest part is that it was probably made by some overworked child somewhere :'c they just want those 4 pennies to pay for the food that day.

The fact these awful dresses can be $80-$100 took me out...who has that kind of money to spend on lolita but doesn't even know about lace market or taobao or even bodyline! Like I can probably get TWO dresses on taobao for that price, maybe even three

As somebody who regularly wears costume pieces-I have to say just HEARING how that fabric sounds has me going "I wouldn't even buy that"

I am actually a beginner at this fashion and I REALLY wanna have a better understanding of lolita fashion. I have issues with my self esteem and sometimes I catch myself wanting to become something more magical and pretty. I was intimidated at first with this fashion but after watching this video I am more comfortable going deeper into lolita fashion.

It's so awesome that you're gonna be making more content about repurposing/recycling clothes and fabric! Such an important topic that people should be more aware of.

I'm so happy that people who don't wear lolita got a shout-out! I've been following the fashion on and off for years. I love the aesthetic and community :)

The panels are all wonky. Thank you for making this video. Five years ago I nearly fell victim to these, glad I waited and learned more before entering the fashion

I’m not into the Lolita style but came here bc of my random KZbin rec. regardless, I’m really glad that you thought about the effects u would have on the environment had you thrown the dress. I’m happy you found an alternative and will be repurposing it! So many KZbinrs (most likely) do not do this and just leave it in their closet or toss it away. Thank you :))

When you brushed the fabric the sound gave me an image of a coarse table cloth, something I'd totally wear as a shirt.

The AndRomeo one or a replica? Do you still have it? What did you do with it!?
@tachthechatgoblin4 жыл бұрын
@@LovelyLor I believe it was a replica as it had no lining and wasn’t structurally sound. I actually ended up recycling it into accessories.
