Ayn stories to tell on the 600s you worked on, and what did the bills run in 2023 $$$$?
@ThriftMachine Жыл бұрын
@@jpkatz1435 my experience was years ago, parts cost and availability these days are a different animal all together. They are stoutly built and most were used as executive cars, so low revs, and smooth usage. They weren't Hoovied much. Brakes and Suspension were the biggest issues that was encountered as they are heavy beasts. Also they would carbon up and have idle issues from puttering in town about versus spirited driving. Coil packs would crap out, especially when it was a humid day and the hairline cracks would arch against the intake. Leaks were more common on lower mileage cars as the seals would dry up some. Changing the trans fluid usually requires a pan replacement as they would warp and leak over time. Window regulators would have issues from the weight of the double pane windows fairly cheap fix, motors held up just the regulator itself would cause problems. They are lovely to drive, like surfing a wave of endless torque versus the on off punch of most cars.

Love how he optimistically says "minor issues" when the hydraulic suspension is rooted. That's probably going to cost thousands upon thousands to repair properly given the age of the car, it'll mean replacing dozens of seals that will all be perished by now, possibly causing distribution blocks that could take many hours to diagnose and repair - even Mercedes master techs often struggle to get them working properly again. Then there are the V12 oil leaks... nightmare... Good content though so he'll probably do fine out of it regardless.

I own it still and must say: that massively potent V/12 is awesome and with the speed limiter remedied to w.o.t. instead of the measley 148 mph governed, it will easily run 30 mph faster. For people of 90's from Balkans like me, those were the benchmark of the ppl who stood on top of the world. There was nothing more appealing then this S class. Still think this is the best car ever made V12 - S600 - its a dream car, i know many ppl love classics like Ferrari or E type and so on, but for me W124 Chochone and S600 V12 W140 ..... just best of the best ever made ....

You should get something like effspot's $12,000 exhaust on his V12 S class. I'm not sure how much it cost him though, but I heard it was pretty expensive...

Pretty rare to see another KZbinr, much less one as big as Hoovie who actually knows their way around an S600 as well as the typical issues. Just be aware that not all 1996 year cars had the updated harnesses.

The main reason the rearview mirror was powered was because it was hooked up to the seat memory. Really love these cars, the engeneering is rediculous. I drive a first gen s300 daily in Belgium, and love it. Glad to see a w140 on your channel again 👍🏻

My 1995 S420 may not have the oomph that the V-12 has, but I have the perfectly working remote control electric rear view mirror, and the Little back-up antennas, and everything on my car works but for the rear seat headrests up and down switch. Same presence, but much lower maintenance costs. We took this old car on 11,000 mile six week loop around the US with zero problems. 115 mph with plenty of unused pedal. Suspension both original and perfectly functioning. And I have slightly more miles on mine than this 600. The 12-cylinder is a wonderful car but prepare to spend.

Gets in a car with a cold V-12 engine, starts it, then redlines it within two seconds. This is why Hoovie’s cars all break.

Gorgeous car! Really looking forward to this restoration! The s600 looks spectacular. Super aggressive yet understated.

That V-12 also had 4 turbos strapped to it and made 850+ HP in the Chrysler ME-412. A car we never got because it embarrassed Mercedes too much.

Didn't this era of MBZ come with the biodegradable wiring harnesses?

Got mine almost new, with an 80k warranty. I sold it as soon as the warranty wore out. The warranty company had spent 45k on repairs. A nightmare, even though I didn’t spend anything. The time commitment was enormous.

This is why they're cheap. I paid $5k for my 4Matic W220. I don't drive it often, 1500 kms/yr, so I haven't had any bad luck with it yet, after 5 yrs of ownership, but one day something expensive will probably fail. I got an Airmatic warning the other day, out of the blue. I restarted the car and the warning went away, so hopefully it was just the rain that was causing some minor issue. I'm happy if I only lose $1k/yr on depreciation, on any car, so I'm good at this stage. Besides, at this price, I could part it out and recoup most of my money anyway.

The 6cyl models are the opposite. I bought a 1992 W140 300SE nearly 4 years ago at 105k and replaced the fluids, filters replaced a few cooling system and ignition parts as preventative maintenance. I've driven it every day since and it's now on 224k without a hassle.

Here in Taiwan W140 S600 is usuly around 2000~4000 USD or even less unless is in mint condition like brend new. But most S600 at here is in the junkyard. Because annual tax on 6 liter is around 2700 USD ,but S320 3.2 liter is around 1100 USD.

I bought the pair new in 1992, convertible and sedan. 389hp new, which was insane for the time. But it was the smoothest engine you can imagine. BTW, the check to buy the pair new in 1992 was... $250,000. That is $537,000 in 2023 dollars - modern S Classes are a bargain, it turns out. At 140mph it was like sitting in your living room - so solid, stable, and quiet. When this video popped up my heart skipped a beat - incredible car. I wish I had kept them as weekenders, but there was just too much money tied up in them. These are cars I will always miss, along with the 500E.

Look at the brake line, we had to replace it on our 2001 with 150K. A brake fluid leak could be causing that ESP error. They seem to go out at about 20 years of age, unless the S600 used stainless steel lines.

I'm really not a German car fan, and often whine about too much German car content... But I do know my classics, and THAT, to me, is a real Mercedes Benz, and what the name should stand for. I really do want to see this one get back to its full glory!!!!
