Agreed - Im not sure I would personally buy it however. I dont use shoulder rests, but I was pleasantly surprised by this so I would be very tempted, but not sure it made 'that' much of a different to warrant me spending the money. I would rather buy 5 guitar pedals for my violin, or new strings etc etc.

Super informative, thank you! I have 2 of the korfkerrests, and I love how light and adjustable the are, but I’ve been curious about this cradle contraption... I’m just wondering about one thing: can you easily remove just the rest and put the violin in your case with the cradle attached, or do you have to take everything off? (Obvs depends somewhat on the case, but assuming a standard oblong bobelock or Musafia case). Thanks again!

Hi ! We can definately hear the difference. Even without the pro microphone and from the first note. As soon as you have started I was thinking richest and deepest sound. As you said, it would probably worth the investment for a professional player looking for the best sound possible. I actually think it is kind of a good deal regarding the fact that it would make a violin sound much better without having to purchase a better sounding violin, which would cost way more than an extra 1000 $. The price is still of course super super high for an amator player who only plays the violin as a hobby. But to improve the sound of an already good violin without paying a lot for a better bow or a better violin, it looks very insteresting. I was genuinely surprised that a shoulder rest could modify in any way a violin sound quality, I thought it would be a video about how truly more confortable (or no) it would be to play a violin with it. I guess everything which interacts with the vibration can make a difference. Also, for a professional player, a more confortable shoulder rest can help preventing injuries which is also a very good point if it indeed works (but probably irrelevant for an occasional player). Thank you for your review :-)
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 5 жыл бұрын
Yes I agree - but I wouldn't confuse this with making a cheaper violin sound better for example. I would think it would only work on a nice violin with an already good projection of tone. I would only purchase this IF you had a decent violin as its more about the tone than it being a shoulder rest - as you said.
@portraitbyelise2309
@portraitbyelise2309 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheOnlineViolinTutor Right ! So definately more suited for professionnal players in need of having the best sound possible. A professional player will probably already own quite a decent violin and would therefore be able to improve it using this. But given the price, it wouldn't really make any sense to use it with a cheap violin anyway 😉 Still very interesting for someone who wants a good violin to sound like an unaffordable better one.

@@TheOnlineViolinTutor Actually, I was wondering if the sound difference could come from those holes (in letting the vibration go through, I guess). I've researched online and found another shoulder rest model, average shape looking but with those same kind of holes all over it, made in plastic mostly and for a regular price, around 20$, called the " Efel shoulder rest violin 4/4 3/4 ". Probably unlikely but it would be great if it gave the same better sound effect as the most expensive one ;-)

I bought the Korfkerest a couple of months ago for £250 (not the version with the cradle) I’d done a lot of research and concluded it was worth trying. The flexibility appealed to me as so many shoulder rests are good but don’t support at the specific points I need them to. A few adjustments with this gave support in specific areas while still feeling free in general. It’s excellent for people who need higher support and once set up comfortably, I was blown away by the sound difference and freedom for playing. If this rest suits your setup, it has the added bonus of feeling almost weightless as if the violin is floating just ready to be played. I appreciate that everyone’s body shape is different so this rest could be a brilliant investment or not at all suitable. personally I consider it the best rest available, but for many of my professional colleges who favour no shoulder rest, this rest would be considered overpriced rubbish. For me personally it’s a godsend! From your video, on my device, there was huge difference in sound quality when you used the korfkarest. Maybe you weren’t happy with the feeling of it, but it sounded so much freer.
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 4 жыл бұрын
I dont disagree with you and I said in the video that I liked the sound, but I just dont like shoulder rests as they really restrict my playing and I cant move about as much to feel the the music. This outweighs the shoulder rest for me as its useless having a lovely sound/tone coming from the violin, but then my playing is rather stifled by the very shoulder rest.

I wish that matched my experience. I feel I wasted the $400 on my korkferrest. It just doesn’t fit me right, even after shaping attempts. I’m saving up for the Dolfino system which has more adjustability

@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 5 жыл бұрын
There is no comparison as any other shoulder rest will sound the same as the violin played with no shoulder rest or in this case, my shoulder/body. This isn’t a shoulder rest in the traditional sense, but a way to elevate the violin in the air away from the body/shoulder or a conventional shoulder rest. There would be no sound difference if I played without a rest using my shoulder, or with a different rest.

Its a good idea in theory, but it wouldn't be worth it as the outcome would be the same as playing with no rest to any other rest. The point with this, is that it creates a totally different tone/sound to the violin - not like any other rests out there. This is not a shoulder rest so it cant be compared to one - hence why I didnt. This purely elevates the violin to create the violins true sound as if it were played in the air with nothing surrounding it. The result you hear here, is the result you would get even if compared to my violin on my body or a Kun or Wolfe shoulder rest. ...besides, I dot have this anymore as I returned it for a refund. I only purchased to make the video.

I have to agree that this shoulder rest added another dimension of sound and colour to your violin, which might atone for the price. I have two instruments both quite old, 1924 and 1783. I have gone back and forth between playing with a shoulder rest and without. I think everyone should try without, even if for a little while as it frees up the shoulder and is challenging for the left hand, and can improve on intonation etc. I think that it's a very personal thing, these shoulder rests, and I have gone through a few, finally settling on the VLM Augustin. It is made of nice maple, very light, and it stays put. Thanks for this video, and I am happy to learn that you returned this one. You may consider reviewing the one that I mentioned, as your students may find it helpful, and it doesn't cost the earth.

@@TheOnlineViolinTutor Actually, it is a fairly simple geometry. If you are not using a shoulder rest, then the back plate of the violin is pressed into your body. This keeps it from vibrating freely. If you can find a way to hold the violin comfortably, and allow the back plate to vibrate fully, you are going to significantly enhance the sound of the instrument.
@aleksinuutila2315
@aleksinuutila2315 4 жыл бұрын
@@PracticalZenBuddhism True, but wouldn't any generic shoulder rest achieve the same. They lift the violin so that the vibrating back plate doesn't touch anything. And the feet are fixed to the relatively non vibrating edge of the plate. That being said this particular rest seems to be fixed very close to the lower corner blocks, which I assume would be the least vibrating parts of the plate.

Its a good idea, but I have had it valued and looked at and besides it being an 1850 Mittenwald violin, thats it!

The thumbnail is right. "Wtf" indeed. That's too much for a shoulder rest even if it is the best.

I would like to see a harness worn by the player where the violin can be attached to the harness the Viper electric violin introduced the harness idea For a thousand dollars I would think that is in the price range of custom fitting were the actual resting slat or bar would be fitted to collar bone pectoral area. Leave the shoulder out of it But yea if a professional has the money they I have my permission to buy without me snickering behind their back I would like to see violins fitted to the player. The idea that violinist must accept a 17 century design is dated in the light of accepted , marketable electric violins. Like for instance the scroll is not needed. Or the back of the violin needn't be contured . The back could be made with more depth to fit the player in lew of shoulder rests. The neck on the bottom side, the curved side doesn't make sense to me more flat sided like a hexagon would make more sense so the left thumb can steady itself more securely when the fingers are on the G string..

Because you anyway play without a shoulderrest you can not hear a big difference.

Should have compared it to a regular priced shoulder rest. And yup I hear the underlying tone you are talking about.
@TheOnlineViolinTutor

No, because this is not a shoulder rest as I mentioned in the video. Its more of a sound enhancing device than a shoulder rest. There wouldn't have been any point comparing it to anything else as nothing else like it exists.

I think the word you want to describe the difference is that rest is it is allowing your violin to Breath. Personally I think that's a lot of accessory to carry around and definitely won't fit into any violin case. Thumbs down on the rest!

I want the shoulder rest that Hilary Hahn has when playing Sibelius 2nd movement that just came out. I wouldn’t buy an expensive gimmick. Less is better. I like taking violin out of case, tune up, rosin bow, PLAY without added accessories. No shoulder rest!
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 5 жыл бұрын
I agree this is expensive, it is far from a gimmick! It’s not a shoulder rest, but it’s supposed to elevate the violin in the air so to speak to allow the wood to resonate to its true tone. Nothing else exists as far as I’m aware. I couldn’t justify for myself personally despite the huge difference it gave me as I don’t do enough solo classical performances to warrant it, but it was interesting none the less.

The Online Piano & Violin Tutor Thank you for the additional info. I did not know it elevated the violin. I read about this when it first came out, but that was a long time ago. I feel that the maker is laughing all the way to the bank for those purchasing his product. I was concerned if it fit in the case, or an on, off thing. I also make violins, and feel the beauty of its tone is how it rests on the collar bone. I have dozens of different shoulder rests, and when one slipped off, my precious Gagliano fell with it! So, it wasn’t much for support. I figure, someone else will come out with another fancy shoulder rest until the reviews come in, and the hype is worn off. Of all my shoulder rests, a boat sponge is my fav. Whoops, I do like Wolf. LOL I liked the music you played with and without it. Maybe a tiny bit of a difference in its favor. Thanks for sharing this!

I think it's a marketing ploy, make something ridiculously expensive and create exclusivity, then people will buy it as a status symbol.

Possibly, but there was some noticeable difference with the sound of my violin when using this - which did surprise me. Not enough however to warrant the price tag.
