I have a 33k mile SMG trans for sale from a running/driving 2008 M5 that will be getting pulled out in a month if you need it. I bought the car to steal the engine and swap it into my E46, so everything else is getting parted out/sold.
@rkan2
@rkan2 6 жыл бұрын
Somehow I feel your transmission is going to cost more than what Hoovie paid for this car. :D (doesn’t hurt trying to sell it, especially to Hoovie, though.
@jwardTLS
@jwardTLS 6 жыл бұрын
@@rkan2 nah, the going rate for a decent mileage DCT is like 3k and i only paid 7k for my donor car for this swap, so my plan was to firesale the diff/rear end, EDC suspension, remaining good panels/hood, the SMG, brakes, etc. That should pay for the 7k that I fronted for the donor car and make it a break even. Probably gonna try to get like 2k for the SMG which is a stellar price i think for a functioning complete trans with 33k miles.

@jwardTLS
@jwardTLS 6 жыл бұрын
@@NoShaDow36 for sure. I'm working with a shop with a fabricator, good wiring guy, etc., I've talked to Epic Motorsports at length as they have done a couple S85 swaps into E46 M3 before. Stock headers fit, minor modification to the subframe and with a 2008 M5 the CAS isn't in the steering column so you can do the swap while retaining the stock E46 rack which makes it immensely easier. Custom power steering lines, custom oil cooler, custom radiator, making a dipstick - yea there are some things there to deal with but we are planning it all out. I'm bolting up an E90 6mt and already have a driveshaft which my fabricator can cut and use to hook it up to the E46 diff. You do this swap by bringing along the E60 ECU for the ride so it isn't some standalone setup which makes it a hell of a lot easier to wire things. Epic Motorsports provides the flash for it already you just ship them the ECU and as long as the wiring guy does his job of making it work with the CEL in the dash, etc. it will work. I haven't haphazardly jumped into it and at 7k for the car which runs and drives, if we lay everything out in a month and decide it will actually be too much, well I can sell a used 33k mile S85 for 10k all day just by itself so I'm not losing anything. This is also my 4th car so time isn't really a factor. I've got a supercharged E92 m3 to tool around with in the meantime.

They are beautiful I saw and Azure blue one and it was like sex. If I bought one I would get one with the six-speed manual. There are people who believe that the rod bearing issue is a combination of too tight of clearances and too heavy of oil. I'm car historically used 10w 60 but 0w 40 is much more common in BMW's and would probably prevent the engine from imploding. You can get it for less than $5 a court at Walmart if you get the 5-quart jugs. You probably want to change the oil twice a year. I don't think I would pay someone to replace the rod bearings but 2500 is not bad for that. As other people have said the oil coolers are around 300 to $400 you'd be better off seeing if they have a higher performance one for a little more

It's not really about that for me. Buying a used V12 Merc for five grand and spending another ten or twenty in repairs still means he's getting an S Class less than 10% of what it originally cost. It let's you know what you're in for if you actually want to buy one of these once amazing cars. If you're a total petrolhead and not a dealer it makes sense.

Good move honestly the e60 m5 has a pure Motorsport engine none of the turbo crap out today once it's fixed you will have a v10 land missile that's cost as much as a brand new Kia Forte and you will love it trust me, As for the SMG transmission it was designed around track use and can be jerky around town or city driving but with a little bit of practice you can get it to behave rather nicely once functioning properly. yjhuoh The Audi beat the M5 overall in test, but was so slow that they didn’t even both publishing its straight line 0-60 and quarter mile figures... the Audi’s motor is down on power, suffers higher drivetrain losses, and shifts through a slower box. A well-sorted E60 M5 SMG will walk a V10 S6 by quite some margin in a straight line race.

@@Gr0t0tter And so it should since the M5's true opponent from Audi is the C6 RS6. You may be right that the SMG is a bit faster but in the end of the day, I would still put my money on the ZF6 in the Audi since these transmissions usually last longer than the cars themselves.

Save yourself a few dollars buy a good used cooler super easy to replace cost me $175 for the part and about half hour of labor. Throttle actuators get a rebuild kit paid $160 (80 each) and replaced the gears i assure you they're worn out. I Also recommend hooking it to a tender box you will get alot of weird codes and gremlins if you let the battery go flat. Good luck and enjoy. I love mine so far......so far lol

My E46 went 200,000 miles and the only thing I ever had to touch under the hood was a valve cover gasket. 100,000 on the E90 and it ate a starter. I have had to replace 2 window regulators. Outside of that they've been great cars. Proper maintenance counts for a lot.

Yea i had all sorts of people tell me not to buy my e46 m3, its unreliable, its too expensive to fix. Ive had it an entire year now and spent maybe a 2 grand on it half of that being tires cause i had a lot of "spirited driving sessions" over the summer months.

people hate doing any kind of maintenance, so BMW is not the car for most people, hell most people change their oil barely once a year or every 30 000 km's. Lazy people can stick to Toyota. My 2007 N54 has had no issues in 2 years, now nearly 220 000 km's. Well I had to change the shocks and windshield but thats gonna happen in any car at these km's.. I have a feeling many of these cars have not been maintained properly by previous owners (see above), and that causes a fair amount of the issues, or abused hard when still cold etc. Maybe not the case with this M5 but other BMWs for sure

It is the same with most performance cars, if they have been well maintained they will be perfectly reliable. But many are owned by people who either are not interested in keeping the car for long, or who wanted the car but couldn't afford to maintain it properly, so they end up neglected with a multitude of problems which will cost thousands to fix. At least this M5 should have been getting regular oil changes if it was leaking oil that fast . . .

As a car salesman selling used cars of all brands, old BMW's are not something I'll ever buy. I get to see the general reliability of everything and BMW's are the worst in my experience, by far. Fantastic cars, but mostly awful to own. The E60 M5 needs thousands of dollars just in preventive work, regardless of maintenance, if you want to ensure it keeps running. That's not good engineering.

my grandpa bought a 2007 M5 brand new for $80,000, he drove it till 2016 it had 86k miles when it started having alot of problems, he traded it in to the dealer (he got like 5g) when he finally got rid of it he told me one day “you know i paid a dollar a fuckin mile on that M5”

While your at it do the gear kits on both throttle servos, $700 would be a nice price since some dismantling is already being done. Oh, you need coolant transfer pipe too. Oh and you need a CCC as your radio, climate, and many other things will soon start to be slow to come on. Welcome to E60 Owner’s Club. Oh and you need valve stem seals. Oh and you need front leading control arm bushings. Oh and you need front and rear windshield and head light surround rubber trims.

SMG is a problem in almost any BMW car. Not to mention that almost anyone who had the money to buy a M5 (or any other M car) factory new usually did not really care that much about longetivety and has beaten his car pretty much since money was not an issue. Later when it changes owner usually at some point the car will be owned by someone who is willing to take good care of the car but at that point the car is in such a bad condition it would cost so much it would not make much sense to do so. Economically. If you are an enthusiast then you do not look that much at that point but still.... my personal recommendation is to stick with a regular non M BMW where you can choose automatic or manual and be happy about it. If you really wanna go for a M car, then only manual. You will still get a lot to maintain but it will stay within a reasonable pricetag value. For example a proper maintained E39 540i with full sport suspension, features and extras and you do not need a M5 unless you really want to. Nevertheless do not buy any M car without someone at your side who understands that sort of car to give you a deeper opinion before buying one even when it means to pay that someone a few bucks for his time.

Snap on is overrated. I have a lot it in my tool chest. Only reason I have a lot of it is cause I know I will wear out all my tools. As long as I don’t lose it, I will keep exchanging the warn out tool until I break even. The convenience of stepping into a tool truck at work and walking out with a newly exchanged hand tool is why we pay the overpriced prices. Don’t get me wrong. You also pay for quality. But you also expect it. When you pay almost $600 for a 12 pc set is wrenches compared $60 for a big box brand... we use to be able to write most of that off until the new tax reform kicked in.
