I Bought the OG 20GB Backwards Compatible PS3 from EBAY... it's on Firmware V2.60!

I bought the OG 20GB Backwards Compatible PS3 from eBay... I'm excited for this one. This is the first PS3 that came out, and not only is it backwards compatible, but it doesn't even have wifi! Kinda crazy, but no big deal if you have access to a wired internet connection. The one I bought comes with the original box and some games/controllers, and is also on firmware V2.60! I bought a 20gb ps3 recently, used it for half life 2 and one session of black ops 2 zombies and it nuked the console. It was reballed and refurbished in every way by the seller, no dust nothing. I had a similar thing happen to my old six axis controller. It would flash once then never keep a charge. I fixed mine by putting a new battery in it and cleaning the inside board. It worked great after that.

I got mine for $350. Was kinda gross inside. Had bugs and lots of dust. I cleaned it out fully, applied new thermal paste, upgraded the HDD to 1TB and got custom firmware installed. It's been a good investment but boy can the fans be loud at times. Mainly got this model to play PS2 games.

The Slim is great. Especially with a custom Firmware. It just sucks that it cannot play SACDs anymore which would have made this thing an absolute one for all system for Blu-rays, DVDs, CDs and SACDs, as well as for gaming of course. But at least it consumes a LOT less energy than the FAT PS3.

I've got my CECHA01 60GB full bw compatible PS3 for around 61 USD. I'm in Europe so that model is very rare here. It was in its original box with the sticker indicating it is from the first batch. I had the warranty sticker but I removed it to repaste. It barely had any scratches and its previous owner only used it as a BD player.

You can't use CECHA, CECHB or CECHE models in Europe. The only model you can use is CECHC. You can't use them because the PS2 games are region locked and you can't play PAL games on them so full bw models are useless in PAL region. You can play only PS3 games on them.

Let's not forget how much the PS3 struggled at first because of its premium price. Sony recovered so well throughout its lifetime that at the end of the generation it managed to overtake the Xbox 360 in global sales numbers. It eventually trumped 360 in Europe and Japan.

I use an air compressor to blow out the dust. These older PS3s have a gigantic fan that you can actually see from the back. Anyways I normally have pretty good luck blowing the dust out of them without having to take them apart and it quiets them down pretty well.

You must change the thermal paste as soon as possible. You will yellow light quickly. Notice how your ps3 warranty sticker hasn't been removed? It's never had the thermal paste replaced.

It's also REALLY dusty inside. Just opening it up and dusting it will make a huge difference. It'll run cooler and the fans will run slower and quieter. But changing the thermal paste is still a good idea. It's really old. He wants to "preserve" the price of the console but it'll be worthless if it breaks down because it runs too hot

Resistance FOM was one of the launch titles from 2006 in the USA (2007 in the UK). Regarding cleaning - anti-bac (or maybe a wet wipe?) and reuse the tissue paper the seller included in the box? Just a thought. Allow to dry though, perhaps? Try using a lens cleaner also, it might make Resistance playable? And perhaps use a hand vac to clean the vents, as it might help there too? Just some ideas.

It means it is dissipating that heat if the fan is going haywire and the air is cold however, it means the components are getting hot and that heat is not getting dissipated, in that case the most likely cause is dry thermal paste which needs to be replaced ASAP unless you wanna end up with a toasted ps3

Awesome. THIS model could also still play SACDs. But i just would not really feel safe playing with it without doing the YLOD fix first. Someone here on YT did a fantastic YLOD issue analysis and showed what was actually the real reason behind it and how to properly fix it. Once this is done, the console should run fine for years to come... till the CMOS error ruins it... The BEST PS3 is still the Dev Kit model which has all the features you'd wanna have.

I got a BC compat 60GB PS3 back in 2014 for $100, the fan would kick on like crazy found a youtuber, I think he's called NSC Modz, followed his guide on delidding the console and did a small reflow and now it purrs like a kitten, freakin sweet. I modded it so I could easily control the fan curve and this thing stays cool and pretty quite, not nearly as bad as it used to.

Such a great console! That model is fully backwards compatible just like the 60gb model, so it can play almost every single ps2 game flawlessly. It could even play Ratchet & Clank for PS2 which runs really poorly on 80gb model.

I paid 20 dollars for one that hasn't been used since 2009 and it had the original warranty seal. I opened it and replaced the disc drive and it works perfectly and super quite. It was the 60 gig model and put a 1tb ssd in it

Jacob, I thought I owned the last existing PS3 like yours. You need to crack that seal though as you will burn that thing up. You need to clean and repaste. While you are in there disassemble the blu Ray drive and dust and clean with alcohol. It will run like new and alleviate your worried of ROD or YOL.

I just picked up a nearly perfect CECHA00 in Hard off store with barely any defects. I live in Japan, normally from UK where they only have CECHC03 partial emulation console. I paid 10000 yen which is like £66 or $87. Maybe you could find even cheaper ones here or not but 10000 yen for the original PS2 hardware models is pretty cheap. Will be region unlocking it to my region to play PAL games too.

Dont worry about the fw, with these old consoles you can revert back to original 2.60 fw with a very easy process. Just put a file on a usb and install it or use a cmfw.

This is a normal problem with the old cases. The plasticizers dampen out, and the rest of the plastic get brittle with time. Something, most sellers not think of. They pack the cases directly in contact with the outer sides, and wonder, in thinking, these cases are a stable and robust thing.

@@KingStr0ng That Mechanical Disc drive you have to manually slide across and slide back to lock the disc in is definitely more likely to break quicker if you over use it for years. The fact that you have to manually have effort each time just to get the disc out of the drive by having grip to pop it out. Its way more simple to press rhe triangle button on ur control and eject the Disc from ur PS3 slim.

I thought this particular model plays ps2 games via emulation. At AO1 with the silver trim around disk player has both RSX and Emotion engine.

Please how do I use the internet cord on the 20 gb ps3 internet connection settings click custom manual settings speed & Duplex/auto-detect then manual Ip address Subnet mask default router primary DNS secondary dns. Once I put all the numbers in it asking Automatic or manual again. I click Auto then do not use then enable. Shows me settings list I push X. I wait then it says failed.

The reason why you aren't able to play The Last of Us in firmware 2.60 is due to one of the latest firmware updates Sony released for the Playstation 3. Specifically, The Last of Us made use of a new function that this new system version included, which allowed it to borrow more ram from the OS. Hopefully it works, and yes It is also because the game released years later. But that's a fact.

@Gavin Townsley Updates came included on the games discs. If he'd pressed Yes to update, it would install new system version from the disc, but not the newest available. Playing offline not equals to games running on obsolete firmware, lol.

I want to up date my 20gb. I don’t know how to do the setting for it. It’s different from the other PS3 wifi set up. Mine will play PS3 games but will not play the ps2 games. Can you show how to do the cord way if you can (settings) I got this ps3 for 50.00 bucks and the warranty is sealed 😅I also put a ssd 500 gb into this boy

I bought a 2nd hand 60gb PS3 for 150 dollars, didn't play it much because I had a PS3 slim 3.55 jailbreak firmware. Later found out the 60gb PS3 Blu-ray drive was broken and most of the 60gb will have ylod sooner or later. Then, I decided to replace the drive and sell it out again for 150 dollars. Should have collect this 60gb, since it's so rare and come with sacd capability.

Nice video again and I also still really like these backwards-compatible PS3 models too although I really wish they would be more reliable and all. I also really wish Sony would have kept the PS2 backwards compatibility feature on all models of the PS3, including the Slim and Super Slim models too. Otherwise, if they ever did, then I wouldn't have to worry about having to grab one of the original models of the PS3 with PS2 backwards compatibility just to play PS2 games on the PS3 that way. I've already been through a few backwards-compatible models of the PS3, and they all stopped working on me although I still have one other working PS3 which is backwards compatible with PS2 games. I've had it now for almost six years already as well and it still works fine so far for the time being since I haven't gotten the Yellow Light of Death (YLOD) on it yet or anything being that I've been lucky with it so far. It would have also been great perhaps if the PS4 and PS5 consoles were ever backwards compatible with game discs from previous generations of PlayStation as well although the PS5 is backwards compatible with PS4 games though since I'm able to play all of my favorite PS4 games on the PS5. I still really like how the original models of the PS3 are physically backwards compatible though with PS2 games and they just seem better on the PS3 too for some reason, especially if the PS3 is also connected to an HDTV via HDMI which helps upscale the graphics in the games that way. I even really like how you can also create Internal Memory Cards for both PS1 and PS2 on the PS3's HDD to save game data for PS1 and PS2 games instead of using the physical memory cards.

I just went to a yard sale here in California and bought a fat PS3 model cech-b00 in real nice shape. And got it for $20.00. and a black Wii GameCube compatible for $15.00 figured it was a good deal

I still have the original Japanese PlayStation 3, model CECHA01 here, in full working order with Linux installed on OtherOS. Complete with the original Japanese box, manuals, accessories and all cardboard inserts in immaculate condition. There aren't many of those around any more, not in this condition. I bought it on week 1 of release in Osaka, but I've been too buys to actually play it. So it's never really left the box.

I still have an original backwards compatible PS3 myself which is actually the 60 GB model and I prefer that model better than the 20 GB model since the 60 GB PS3 has more storage space and all including built-in Wi-Fi Internet too which the 20 GB model doesn't have. Despite the original models of the PS3 not being very reliable though, I still really like the fact that they were originally backwards compatible with PS2 games before Sony eventually removed that feature off of the later models of the PS3. I also personally think that most PS2 games seem to play somewhat better on the PS3 than they do on the PS2, especially if the PS3 is connected to the TV via HDMI as well which helps upscale the graphics in the games to make them seem better that way. I still really wish Sony would have kept the PS2 backwards compatibility feature on the later models of the PS3 which would have been really awesome, and I also wish the PS4 and PS5 consoles were fully backwards compatible too even though the PS5 is backwards compatible with PS4 games which is at least better than nothing anyway. I still have an operating 60 GB backwards compatible PS3 though so far which still works fine for the time being since I haven't had the YLOD or anything on it yet, and I've had it now for over four years already too since I got it off of Amazon back in 2018.

@@HistoryandReviews That's what I was talking about though since I also prefer the 60 GB model better and I also agree. Even though both the 20 and 60 GB models of the PS3 are backwards compatible with PS2 game discs, I really like the 60 GB model better since it has more storage space than the 20 GB model, and the 60 GB model also has built-in Wi-Fi as well which the 20 GB model doesn't have apparently.

I still got my original ps3 it’s like new been well looked after. Don’t use it now because I’m on ps5 now. My ps3 is backwards compatible with ps1 and 2 and still got its warranty sticker, it’s never ever caused me a problem and never let me down. Still have my box, etc. was a good console at the time.

I know this video is older, so you may know this by now, but something to note with the PS3, the games that have “Playstation3” written out across the side of the case in “Spider-Man” text, those are launch games or games released earlier in the lifecycle of the console. Those that have “PS3” on the cases are mid and later releases. Resistance and I think Hot Shots Golf were both launch titles and Uncharted was an early release. I’m not surprised that Heavy Rain and The Last of Us required console updates considering how late-of-releases both of those games were. Also, you did have a light on the first controller. The reason it probably didn’t flash like the others is because it was likely already synced with the console from the previous owner…
