I bought the Osmo Action 2 Instead of the Osmo Action 4 | Hear me out!

I bought the A2 brand new while holidaying in Japan last month. I must say I love it to bits. I don’t do any or much sports, but when I bought it my expectations was that it’s more like a travel vlog camera that can tolerate some sport activities and for that purpose it excels. Personally I don’t record long videos and prefer recording short clips in 2.7k/4k for instagram and socmed stuff. If you’re like me, i think A2 fits in that niche nicely.

Just bought this camera with the screen & power module. Also have that same 1/4 20 adapter from smallrig. I'm impressed with the video quality. One thing you might want to add is the DJI tripod for the Action 2 with remote. It's kinda pricey but I found one on eBay for $58. Worth having just for the remote. Thanks for this review!

i have a large camera collection, and my action camera of choice is the action 2. the dynamic range in the highlights can be REALLY BAD sometimes. besides that it probably fills the niche of tiny action camera the best imo.

Same here. Have the Action 1 and 2 and the DJI microphone system. Love them. Skipped the Action 3 but did just get the Aciton 4. DJI kills it.

@@djsomers100Great to hear! If I get another action cam, it will be the 4. I swore off GoPro a few years ago because It failed in a critical shoot. Recorded audio and a black screen. That wouldn't have been enough by itself to make me swear it off...but then I found out it's kinda "GoPro's thing" and instead of fixing it in firmware, they just come out with new camera and say that will fix it...but then the new cameras have the exact same problems. I hear the 11 is better but I'm done with them. They sucked me in twice. lol So glad there are alternatives.

@@babybackmaniacleftovers My first action camera was a GoPro. Still have it. Had it mounted to a DJI Phantom 2 drone (which I also still have). The GoPro had its issues and DJI stuff has always been rock solid for me. Always seem a better value and a bit in front tech wise. It's all good. Amazing technology that is advancing so rapidly its crazy.

You should try using it with the remote tripod accessory, it's a small tripod with a magnetic ballhead. This accessory workd very well with the action 2. I've had mine for about a year now and I don't feel the need to upgrade anytime soon.

Also something awesome I saw people mention about the dji action 4 is if you take off the screen protector off for the lens and adjust the other one it came with it works amazing for night shooting as in it looks better

These have a purpose, for sure. I use my Action 2 for my model trains. With the magnetic base, it will hold solid on a steel plate (in my case, I just removed the shell off a caboose). And it is FAR lighter (and smaller) than something like a GoPro, so it won't derail the train by pulling the car holding it to the side if you're filming a fast run.

Lol i never used the sticky mount because I thought it was permanent and I never could figure out what I wanted to permanently stick it on!!! I also didn’t know that stupid thing screwed off so I could finally use the camera on my tripods mounting devices!! thank you! I think I’m going to have better luck using this camera for winter and skiing then what I originally got it for which was summer vacation to for my son’s graduation and another one in Disneyland, which was pretty much unusable and was really frustrating because I would lose footage when it would overheat!

I love the Action 2 but just a tip, if you plan to use your action 2 for things with action, then dont use it with the case because it could come off, the case is secured with magnets to the action 2 but not with the clamps.

Just format the sd card via pc/laptop to exfat, problem solved for video clips that are larger than 4gb ... i had to do this with my dji acton 2, works flawlessly

Are you serious? Like 100% sure that works? Because I read pretty much every thread on the DJI forum and everyone said that's a 4gb is a DJI software thing...no work arounds.

@babybackmaniacleftovers Hi Well that's very odd as when i had my dji Action 2, I reformatted the sd card to exFAT via laptop and ran tests (as I do a Tech channel) and it worked fine with me, as I was getting the same issue with only being able to record silly clips of about 4mins The reason behind why the DJI action 2 formats the card in FAT32, is so that if the device does overheat and shut completely down, you'll have at least some files to work with, otherwise there is a possibility that the full recording could be lost if corrupted (effectively DJI are playing it safe when you reformat the card with FAT32)

DJI Paladin Online You can do format your SD card using your computer, patdig, and please note that the SD card that is less than or equal to 32GB should be formatted into the FAT32 file system while the SD card that is larger than 32GB should be formatted into exFAT file system. 3 Jun 2021

Because I think that clips breaking up are at this point as much about DJI's software as the the hardware/formatting...at least according to all the threads I read. That's why I was hoping you had done this and not had the issue on long clips.

@babybackmaniacleftovers Tbh with you, I sold my DJI Action 2 a few months ago (due to the overheating issues that I was having and Dji doing nothing about it) so I can't put that to the test, but after running through some of my old clips on the sd card that I only used for my Action 2, it seems that it was continually recording for over 6 mins @4k 60fps , when the card was formatted to exFAT, where beforehand when the sd card was formatted in FAT32 I was barely getting 4 mins before it started a new file recording, so I'm assuming that's a clear fix to me, but without having the Action 2 overheating a Fraction over 6 mins its hard to really know. Either way for me anyways, I couldn't resume recording if it was fixed or not due to the overheating issues that this little device was experiencing. Im a little bit sad really as this was one of my favourite action cameras to date and in my experience it thrashed my Gopro's, insta360 x3 and One Rs, due to its perfect size and high-quality video and sound quality and I do miss it very much

Hi! Great review! I have the original Action 1 and was thinking of upgrading to the Action 4 but now I could get the Action 2 for almost half the price of a 4. How would you rate the low light performance of the 2 vs the 1? That´s the biggest weak point with the 1 for me...

A it of a negative rubbish review but each to their own. Mine get warn not to much and off loading content is very quick. So I can download footage then WhatsApp them so quickly just like my iPhone. It’s so stable. Lowlight I don’t expect daylight footage on any device so to complain about lowlight well. It is lowlight after all. Devices that light up lowlight is kinder fake so what if you need lowlight footage. Now what. People will main either way. I think it’s a. Excellent action can and that is what it is. You say it’s not then later say it is. The action 4 it’s a good device up against GoPro and insta but this is unique and should not be compared. DJI are masters on developing new technology and this is a super spectacular camera.

The DJI Action 2 is more in competition with Sony RX0. I think it's just DJI that didn't name their products properly. This one should have gone a different name, so they can continue with modular design, people really like it, and it's very stealthy.

Isn't it supposed to be warm as it is all metal? I think it dissaptes the heat better this way and adding any added casing can lead to stop that heat from coming out of the action cam. What do you say, I am gonna buy this one or should I look for some other? It will be my first action cam. So just need inputs, please.

Action 2 has been good except when mountain biking. It’s a great casual sports camera. Easy to use good quality but the mounts are loud and the rock steady isn’t steady. GoPro crushes this camera in comparison.

the fact that there isn't a battery pack that's water proof id rough. they aught to be able to make a water proof Gromit that lets you connect a battery thats waterproof tbh. just discovered snorkeling this week, and i have to exit the reef every 15 minutes or so to offload the limited storage on the camera module (25gb?) or recharge the camera battery from the battery module/ (a PLUS for the battery pack here!!!!) you can move the camera storage files to the battery packs sd card, and charge the camera battery from the battery pack, it takes little too long, but then you get back in the water with empty storage and fresh charge. and to unwrinkle a little i guess. but on its own, you only get about 10-15 mins of underwater footage before you have to get out. kind of a pain. also, TAKE off the added protective shell before going underwater. you dont need it, and it will keep water from sitting in it, thatll cause problems when you connect to battery module. trust me

I just had my action 2 up in Hokaiddo and it could not handle the cold at all. Shuts down due to cold weather at -5C and below (the website says it works to 0C, so I shouldn't be surprised), but don't think you can use it for snowboarding

Thanks for the low light clips. I noticed the significant downgrade (compared to Pocket 3) but you confirmed for me it’s not a faulty unit. I will adjust expectations and use it in good light. Just love the form factor so much.

These days I think the best money you can spend in cameras is on a really good cell phone. These are all special use and/or Plus 1 cameras in my mind. And iphones are waterproof since at least the Iphone 8. I wouldn't take mind in the ocean but it fine in the pool. But yeah, If you don't need 4k/120 or horizon leveling stabilization and you aren't looking for a camera to free up your phone, you are fine with your cell phone.

And the camera unit is the smallest one I know of that shoots 4K 60 and or 120 frames per second in full HD. If none of that appeals to you, then they probably isn’t a point… Except that it’s substantially cheaper if you find a used deal

Osmo 2 with both blocks is the same size as the Osmo 4. Which the Osmo 4 can fit into your pocket easly.

@@babybackmaniacleftovers Im just wondering as Im upgrading my GoPro 6 to something Newer. The Reason I loved the GoPro is I just stuck it in my pocket. I have a much better camera. D850 from Nikon. But to just carry around it big. I like leaving my Cell Phone at home. Let the Answering machine do its job. But I still want a Camera. Small, OSMO4 is better than GoPro now in low light. Which you can attach a zoom. Oh well. But dam OSMO2 just one block looks supersmall. But if you need both blocks. Im going with the Osmo4. I ll just left more weights in the gym to be able to compensate for weight difference. ;p lol
