Hey Jackie, long time watcher here, and I really have to comment about this box because I am a huge stationery nerd -- I don't know why you're disappointed with this set? It's an excellent stationery set IMO. You have gotten a lot of cute, fun, quality stationery items. You said you can't see the theme here, but there is a theme: this is all stuff stationery nerds like me salivate over for things like journaling, planner-keeping, lettering, and general day-to-day life stuff. My partner and I love your channel so I say this as a fan and as a person with loads of respect for you: when you review stuff that doesn't interest you and give it a bad score or complain because you don't understand it, it doesn't feel good for those folks the stuff is made for. I wanted to come in just to let you know of the value of this set because it's a really good set -- absolutely amazing, actually. Please consider the target audience for these products you review more when you review them; sometimes your reviews are unfairly slanted toward personal bias versus the quality of an item (even when you say you won't do this at the start of a video.) This has happened several times before but this is the first video I felt strong enough emotions to speak up. I know you care about us grains (and we care about you in return), so you don't intend to hurt anyone's feelings, but this video definitely stung a little, lol. Maybe reviewing things that actually interest you for a while, rather than things that have gone viral, would be better? I know it might not get as many views, but you don't seem to enjoy a lot of the viral stuff because it doesn't pertain to your interests, which leads to a harsh take. I do want to add that my household is still a fan after this video (I'm grumpy over some pens lol but I'm not going to unfollow you for it after all these years!) and we're always cheering you on and watching every video you produce! So I hope this comment doesn't offend.

I feel like she is chasing the viral trends too much without doing her research. It's sad. This box is lovely but just not her style at all, but that is something she could have found out by researching the company and reading the item description. She assumed since it was coming from Japan it would be cutie novelty items.

The only "disappointing" thing i can found about this box is the choose of the colors of some of the markers/gel pens. Except the fact that these colors can be or not liked by the person that receive the box, they work really well toghether except for the green ink pen and the green pencil. Yes, these two items can work together, but they feel a little "not in palette" with the other products, in my opinion.

I agree, honestly it seems like a waste that she bought an advent calendar that could've went to someone who could truly appreciate the items just to criticise it because it doesn't suit her style. She really should've done more research instead of spending money and complaining about the items for a whole video, sounds like a waste of money and time for everyone.

I think the memo pad is a great addition to a stationary box, seeing as it is more geared towards someone that uses pens in an office type setting, and less so than someone that does art.
@ethereal_illusions
@ethereal_illusions Жыл бұрын
Jackie I enjoy your videos but this one was a little hard to watch. As someone who is an avid Japanese stationary lover and art supplies lover…this box was being unfairly judged. The pen holder/cup is not meant for pencils…as stated by its name. There’s also a limit to how many pens it can store, the limit is also mentioned at the box. That’s why they come in a variety of sizes. They have some that can hold pencils but those are usually the taller ones. These are targeted for office workers who works on the go so that they can access their pens easily no matter where they are working. The memo pad is one of the best memo pads for those who enjoy writing with fountain pens. In my country, life noble memo pads and notebooks cost upwards to 100 ringgit (approx. 21 USD), plus expecting a sketchbook from this box is a little out of theme. Also Iwako erasers are really popular in Japan for avid stationary collectors as they have unique themes and sometimes they collaborate with other food/anime, and they can be quite costly too… The Curidas is a cheaper alternative to the more expensive pilot capless or vanishing point. I personally own both pens are they are great for people who love fountain pen but wishes to have the convenience of not losing their pen cap or posting it. I genuinely feel that maybe this advent calendar is not geared towards someone like you but maybe it’s more so for someone who journals or writes a lot. I think the post is long enough 😅because I could go on forever as I’m someone who has worked and lived in Japan and still appreciates the stationaries there and pay a fortune in my country to access them.

I'm just a little confused at why Jackie was expecting art supplies or fun stationary since this is all high quality pens, which the box and description state that it would be. I feel this is 2023 version of the playdoh advent calendar. I understand being 'salty' is the vibe and on brand for Nerdecrafter, but this was such a good stationary calendar. You can tell it'll be high end writing pens and more 'adult/plain' items due to the box style and the price! And that notepad is perfe t for the pens? Fr though, it felt entirely too judgmental at products that were up front about what they are (like the PEN case) The constant complaining about one thing or another just got tiring after awhile Especially whenever the "lack" of a theme was brought up Cause the box DOES have a theme Its stationary, the comment of "art or office stationary" doesn't make sense cause "art stationary" is literally just art supplies and it isn't advertising to be an ART calendar stationary is already implied to be for office stuff or general uses Usually it can be fun to watch negative reviews from her but this one fr felt like she was judging it based off assumptions and lack of knowledge most the video

Hey Jackie, Been a longtime viewer and this is probably the first time I've disagreed with one of your reviews. I think you definitely got your money's worth and as others have mentioned, it's a nice introductory set for different brands and stationary. I fell into the stationary rabbit hole late last year and love or know a lot of the brands mentioned in this video. The nice thing about Japanese pens is that a lot of them are refillable! Instead of throwing away the pen after it's run out of ink, you can purchase the cartridge refills for relatively cheap to encourage you to keep using the same pen. There are no rules about mixing brands either especially if you have a favorite pen body style but might prefer a specific ink formula (Ballpoint, Gel pen, Rollerball). Fountain pens can range anywhere from a few dollars to a couple of hundred depending on the brand, materials and even the nib type. I can't blame you for feeling a bit intimidated by the last one because vanishing points are usually seen in more expensive pens and can be intimidating for beginners or people unfamiliar with how to clean and maintain them.

@Ninja-Club

Hey Jackie! (I'm from Germany, where we used fountain pens at school and learned to write with them) In the ink cartridge there is a small ball which you first push into the ink cartridge with the fountain pen (to open the ink cartridge and keep the ink itself liquid wich you did really good, considering you have never seen those pens before (you can shake it and the ball mixes the components of the ink again)) and you hold the fountain pen so that the silver side points forwards and away from you and the black side points towards you and therefore is closer to the paper. The ink comes out through the small slit at the very front of the fountain pen and after a little practice you can write and draw with it really nicely. Love you and your videos!❤ (hope it helped😅)

I was honestly disappointed with Jackie’s attitude in all this. She even says she loves washi tape and then unboxing it she’s sour about it ‘There’s no theme’ ‘it’s all stationery’ stationery is the theme. Stationery is pens, pencils, notepads, highlighters, sticky notes - sometimes cute and kawaii but this one wasn’t advertised as cutesy kawaii stationery. What Jackie wanted was art supplies with some cutesy stationery that doubles as desk decoration built in but it’s not an art supply advent calendar. and it is cohesive in the fact that you’re getting a sampling of the items you can purchase from that website. Single brand calendars typically will have a theme, websites that carry a bunch of different brands will have a sampling of their wares so you find what you like and go back and purchase from them Idk sometimes when Jackie doesn’t like something off rip it feels like that’s it there’s no deciding otherwise. Like yeah it wasn’t the calendar you expected but maybe go back, read a bit more, realize what the calendar is and then judge it based off that rather than judging it as if it’s like a zen pop box

Yeah, if she actually researched the company or really any of the items she would understand. She got a stationary calendar. It isn't all cute gift shop pens and art items. I think she just realized that it wasn't going to be an "entertaining" box for her to show off and took it out on the product. The only cheap item in the box was the eraser and it was a novelty item. Which she probably wouldn't have minded if it had been an animal she liked.

@@silverhoney6969 they make amazing highlights / granted you need to make sure you are putting it over the correct ink as they are alcohol based. but to highlight printouts they are great. so are the tombow twins. They are all Cult favourites. Colours were probably open stock / open packs and random. Again... "please give me something artsy" pleads Jackie, mere seconds after opening a FOUNTAIN PEN. 😂 And TO BE FAIR, the "pencil case" actually called itself a PEN case, so it's specifically designed for PENS. Which I think makes it a little unfair to criticize it for not fitting pencils. It wasn't designed for that! I'm pretty into the whole Japanese stationary scene, and this is not only EXACTLY what I'd expect from a set like this, but also honestly a PHENOMENAL advent calendar! There's two freaking fountain pens in there! And one is so fancy it's nearly the cost of the entire box!! This is exactly the sort of variety I'd be hoping for with a box like this. Some markers, some pens, some pencils, some accessories... Not to mention TWO freaking fountain pens, one of which is the type people would make whole videos reviewing, and you didn't even try it because you're too unfamiliar with fountain pens! 😩 Jackie, you just weren't the target audience for this, and that's okay. the idea of advent calendars that are put out by companies is for you to get a taste... then shop their site or stores (or even on the companies part ... shop anywhere) and become a long term purchaser... thats how Cult Pens got it's name... literally a cult following.

Ughh Jackie this one hurt. I feel like this beautiful Japanese stationary advent calendar was a gold mine. So many special pieces. I wish there was just a bit of research done in the moment before haphazardly testing all these amazing stationary tools. I understand not everyone knows how to use a fountain pen, but you kind of ruined the opportunity to ever try with that particular nib by scratching it all over the paper. It will certainly have to be replaced in order to use that pen properly. Also, I just want to mention, copic ink are refillable for ALL types of copic marker including the ciao. As for the pen case, I wouldn’t consider it a disappointment just because it did not fit the pencils. It is labeled as a pen case. I believe the point of this particular advent calendar is to to give you unique items that can be used with your existing tools and art/stationary, not to fit everything in the advent calendar into one category. I hope this doesn't come off as harsh! I certainly don't mean it that way. It was just disappointing for me to see many of my favorite products used improperly, then denigrating them based on user error instead of the quality of their functionality. I guess l'm just a little salty about this one. 😂 But I still love you Jackie!!! ✊🏾

Dying when Jackie used the fountain pen the wrong way 😂 if the fountain pen is only 10 dollars it is not the highest quality they have. They have really pretty and expensive ones starting from 200-1000 dollars. They are good and I still have mine and have one from my great great granny. (Yes of course there are more expensive brands out there…)stationary is office stuff or study stuff for me, not something for creative use… maybe I am wrong. Idk I feel like it’s not worth it and I wouldn’t call this as a whole a bunch of art supplies. Yes you can absolutely with pens but that’s pretty much all it was. Wasn’t enough art support supplies to mention. And I don’t even fully wanna call this a stationary advent colander either. The quality of the items is good but there’s no variety. You literally just spent $150 on pens…. And as much as it’s nice to have good pens and you don’t have to just use them to write, I know most people wouldn’t want to spend that money on just pens. And even if they were inclined to do so I’m pretty sure people would prefer to choose the type of pens and ink colors. Throwing in one color pencil or one notepad in my opinion doesn’t justify calling it neither Art nor stationary supplies. Stationary and art is more than just pens and that’s all we got. No stickers. No stamps. No envelops….no paint or paint brushes. No sketch book. So I understand and agree with Jackie’s disappointment. Regardless the quality of then items inside I feel like this was underwhelming. And unless u have some type of pen collection, or if u r yuri (iykyk), then u won’t really be able to appreciate this whether it was a gift or not.

@@MochiSyrup I think that's where the thing lies though as an artist I've easily spent close to $150 on pens before for good liners and such. I also think the people who are really into note-taking might like it I think it all depends on audience at the end of the day. When Jackie mentioned splitting it up into more art base versus office stationary I think that was probably the best deal that it could have done. Me personally I like office stationery and I don't really care as much about washi tape or having fun little stickers I like good pens.

The calligraphy pen is from the german brand Pelikan :) we call it "Füller" here and it goes with ink . the containers of the ink usually have a tiny plastic ball inside that acts like a lid. You need to press the non-flat end into the pen so the ball pops into the container (you usually hear or feel a slight *click* inside. that way you know the container popped open.) It often helps to dip the pen tip ("feather") into the ink of the container to get the ink flowing! They basically imitate the feeling of "feather and ink". Hope that helps! Greetings from Germany!

As a huge stationery nerd I'm goona say that this is an amazing stationery box. If you use journals and planners this box is perfect for that. Fountain pens are for general everyday writing and not really for calligraphy (though there are some calligraphy fountain pens - those with flex nibs or broad nibs). Think of fountain pens as the ancestors of modern day pens. Starting from feather quills (like the ones they use in Harry Potter) to dip pens with metal nibs (like the ones used for calligraphy) to fountain pens (used by most until the 1960's-70's) to present day roller ball/ball point/gel pens.

It's a stationery advent calendar, so I myself would expect pens and pencils the most, though more erasers would be nicer! :D But I think you might be disappointed because you went on with hopes that it would be unique or fun stationery or maybe even art supplies, instead of what's written in the description, which is useful stationery. Not saying something fun and unique can't be useful, but Im just saying, it fits the description of 'top quality' and 'useful' stationery. I'd argue just one colored pencils are not that useful but those pens and pencils definitely are. Even memo pads being there instead of a sketchbook makes sense since it fits the theme of 'useful' stationery

Cult Pens are very well known in certain circles and their focus is much more on the 'serious' stationery for writers, planners and journallers (we use those kinds of copic colours as highlighters/mildliners). They cover every type and budget of pens, pencils and inks from the generic to the specialised and coveted. They get a lot of exclusives from some of the big brands in this field. This calendar is what I would have expected from them given the other 'surprise' boxes they curate through the year and it's definitely not overstock, there are whole communities out there for this stuff. It clearly missed the mark with you, and that's fine. I wouldn't appreciate an art box as I don't art, but would have been overjoyed with this one. We don't all have to like and appreciate the same things. Just be nice to the Curidas 😉

18:50 Tombow Dual End ABT are really nice pens for both calligraphy and art, as someone who loves watercolour supplies they have some beautiful, bright and pastel inks that are really hard to find in a lot of watercolour sets. They blend well with just a watercolour pen or brush for watercolour effects, you don't need the colourless blender but they do make one in case you'd rather use them as markers. And you don't need a lot of pigment laydown, they're highly pigmented. (And they don't have an odor like alcohol markers, so if you're sensitive to smells or want to use them in a smaller space, they're a really great alternative to copics, ohuhu etc.) They're not lightfast, as most watercolour mediums aren't (except for some of the high-end watercolour pencils and tubes) they're not refillable (Ecoline brush pens are though. but they lack a bullet tip end, if it matters to you.) and they can run very expensive in a complete set, but you can buy them individually and in smaller sets to build up a collection. (I bought mine when I found them on clearance.)

Is not a box make for crafters, but rather for planner community, journaling, and stationery lovers in general. If you compare this brands in the box with the stationery than comes in the real littles or mini brands you’ll see the differences… and there are a lot. Pencils and colored pencil’s quality are “measured” in smoothness, resistance of the lead (how easy it breaks), and if when you are sharpening the pencil the shavings hold its shape, that’s a good quality wood. For gel pens you want to look for smoothness, “railroading”, smears, among others. It’s a whole wonderful word ❤

For anyone here interested in fountain pens - yes, they're still a thing! They are a level up from ball point and you have unlimited ink options including shimmer and sheen! I recommend going down the fountain pen rabbit hole 😊

@@nonsensicalname you can even get fancy inks in bottles for them. Some use cartridges. Some have a suction piston you need to twist

I used Pelikan inks years ago when I was dabbling in calligraphy. They've been around for a while in the USA. Nice quality.

My day is 13 and I got the blue pen with the turtle. I love that you open the random things. We all know your obsession with stickers, stationery and japan. This box gives you all of it. Plus the random moneky stuff is hilarious 😂

Those Tombow pencils are absolutely amazing. I have the full collection except for the last 10 because they put them out separately after I bought the full set and they are some of my favourite colour pencils

Pelikan is a German brand, hence the "k". It's pretty nostalgic for me because we all learned writing with fountain pens (a chonkier type though). You have to twist in the ink cartridge to make sure the top is open, then gently use it until it works.

The pen with the nib is called a cartridge pen because of the ink cartridge inside. I haven't seen one of those in decades. But you got it right. When you screw on the top it pierces the cartridge so the ink comes out. Number 19. I got two coloring markers. I've never used anything like this before, but I'm pleased with my surprise : ) I can't believe that last pen costs so much! I would call this advent calendar a Pen and Pencil Sampler box. Not the kind of calendar I would want to buy.

We actually call them fountain pens more commonly in english. Still incredibly popular - but typically more of an aficionado kinda thing.

Fountain pens were the precursor of the cartridge pen. I'm 70 and had a fountain pen way back when : ) It had a tiny lever on the side of the pen. You would open the lever, dip the pen in the bottle of ink, then close the lever. I guess it was like a miniature pump. I loved writing with it, but the ink was messy. That's why we used to have these huge blotters on our desks. I was glad when they came out with cartridges.@@BassKittehz

Honestly, I don’t think it’s lacking too much of a theme! There are a couple odd balls of course- but I think people into bullet journaling or even general note taking would actually love this box. Lots of pens, a few fun things thrown in for pops of color and highlighting- it really felt like a bullet journal advent calendar to me haha

As a Artist, I definite likes those pens and pencils for a reason: To Draw! The Stationary box is exactly what "Stationary" box really is, all these pens, pencils, erasers, memo notepad, pen case, etc! I wouldn't be surprised that they are meant for the office or school rather than "art supplies".

this didn't feel like overstock at all, I'm an avid Japanese stationary user and I've used a majority of the products featured and have others in my wishlist. Your review was particularly abrasive this time around-- I kind of wish you hadn't reviewed it at all if it was going to be this unpleasant for you. I hope you can find an art supply box that is more suited towards your taste. I actually didn't know this box existed or I would have purchased it myself as it looks like a fantastic set for stationary lovers.
