It doesn't surprise me with these little buggers. For some reason they really do live longer than standard horses. At the yard I learned to ride at they had a slightly larger pony, and none of us knew exactly how old she was. When I started riding she was already in her late 30's, they tried to retire her but she became poorly real quick, so she was kept in very light gentle work. When she passed, the vets estimated she was upper end of her 40's, somewhere between 45 and 48 years old. It's amazing how long they can live with a good quality of life when they receive the appropriate care and attention.

I so agree, and it's not like elder animals have any less personality. Where I work we usually get shelter kittens that we try to adopt out, but the other day we got an older cat to try and adopt out, which is a little unusual. I was expecting a more laid back, tired cat, but this big boy (his name was big boy as well) was almost as personable as Tiny, cowgirl's cat. He was so sweet, and honestly I would have taken him home if I was looking for a cat myself.

What I find astounding is that the auction house that took this pony, are there no people from animal control, I’m not familiar with animal auctions, that when an abused animal comes in that they are immediately reported? Do the people who put this pony up for auction, do they have more animals? This woman did an amazing job in helping get this pony the proper medical care and she gave it a wonderful home . Please see my comment above. These are neglected horses, not abused horses. The cost of horse care caused me to give up one of my two horses and eventually the remaining one. Once upon a time rural life was commonplace and land was cheap. Humanity is suffering from the lack of being connected to the Earth and her creatures. No amount of fancy restaurants or cool art galleries can compensate.

I cried my way through this post. I have a little fella that could be Nigel's twin! I bought him 2 years ago for my granddaughter. He's only 5.5years and has gotten to about 12hh. Similar story, he'd been neglected and was very nervous of people. My granddaughter was thrilled with him. She called him Cookies & Cream or Cookie for short. They learned a lot together in a very short time, because sadly we lost my granddaughter 1 year ago tomorrow. She'd fought brain cancer for 4.5 years and was about to turn 7. Cookie is beloved and will always have a place with us. I love these little horses that are so worth the effort and deserve someone's love. Thank you for what you have done for Nigel ❤

My mother left home at an early age. Her grandfather's stepdaughter claimed her pony. When her grandfather died over 25 years later she went to check on her pony. She found him with overgrown feet and in an extremely poor body condition. Since she was living in an apartment she took him to a nearby farm to board him. She called a vet and a farrier who were able to save him. He only lived a few years after that but she was able to visit him and make him comfortable til he passed. So glad you saw the worth in this wonderful little pony. Your journey with him made me think of her and her beloved Billy Boy.
