I was considering the Sony a7cii vs the ZV-E1 to buy for my KZbin channel. And after doing my research I decided on the older yet very capable ZV-E1. In this video I want to explain why, if you are also into creating KZbin videos, you might also want to consider it.
The Sony a7cii is a camera a lot of people have been waiting for. It's compact. It's very capable. And it's also very expensive. But even though it's the latest and greatest, in MY opinion it's missing a couple things which is why I will pass on this incredible camera... for now!

I’m going to be recording outside for about 45min-1hr almost everyday. I’ll probably just film in 1080p since I’m uploading to KZbin. Do you think this camera will overheat in 1080p for my use? I already pre ordered the A7C ii but since I mainly shoot video I’m considering the ZV E1 instead.
@thesahdstudio
@thesahdstudio 10 ай бұрын
To be honest my dude, I don't know. My thoughts would be if you will only be using it for 1080p maybe get something else? Well let's think more about how you will use it to find if it's the right camera for you... Will it be handheld or on a tripod? What lens are you going to use? Will you use it indoor at all? There is no question they are both banger cameras, but if you don't need super crispy 4k, maybe you can get something better for your needs for less money and have more left over for extra goodies (mic / lights, etc)
@torgg
@torgg 10 ай бұрын
The reason I’m looking into these is because I’d really like to get a compact full frame camera. The footage would be handheld by someone else filming me most of the time. A lot of footage would also be shot indoors and some use as a webcam. The biggest thing that I like about the zv e1 is the lowlight capabilities and extra stabilization. But my camera would be used a lot and overheating is my biggest fear with it.

@@torgg I get you man. I think you wanting something compact AND something that won't overheat is a bit of a tough ask... that's exactly why they make non-compact ones you know what I'm saying? I mean, the a7siii and fx3 might be worth considering, especially if you can find a good used deal?

cool video, thanks for posting. I love my zve1 and shooting outside in South Florida is not an issue. I sold my a74 to buy the zve1 and couldn’t be more happy except I miss the a74. Thanks for watching! So you were rocking the a7siii/a7iv combo and are shifting to the a7cii/zv-e1 combo? That's fun. Yeah those first cameras ARE a little bulky aren't they. Maybe a little long in the tooth with features. Everything's a little more compact and up-to-date with the latest AI chips, autofocus with the newer batch of smaller cameras. What a nice lineup! What lenses will you usually have on them?!

@thesahdstudio Ive owned my a7siii for three years now and absolutely promised myself when I bought it I would never sell it. By far best camera ive ever owned. But the zve1 is so darn good - small, updated and basically the same camera as the a7siii. I love it even more than my siii!!. I miss my a74 a lot and when the a7cii was released this week that was it for me. the zve1/a7cii is absolutely the perfect combo for me. I do far more video than photos but it's nice to have the 33mp in the a7ciii with all the updated AI and autofocus even just for the ability to punch in closer with the higher res during video. I currently own/use the f4 16-35pz, the 2023 f4 20-70, f1.8 20mm G and the older but sill great FE 35 f1.8. ive owned and sold so many Sony, tamron and sigma lenses but these are what I have now and are perfect for me. I did order the 28-60 kit lens with my a7cii pre-order. kit lenses arent like a G or GM but they do come in handy. Im not a pro - just do it for fun and my KZbin channel!

@ChrisMitchells_FlyingCameras
@ChrisMitchells_FlyingCameras 10 ай бұрын
Zve1 overheating is a myth promoted mostly by trolls that don’t own or haven’t used the zve1. Sounds harsh but it’s true. I own the a7siii, sold my a74 to buy the zve1. I live in South Florida where it’s always hot and humid. Unless you plan on shooting long format 4k60 - 30 minutes + or 20 minutes + in 4k120 in 90 degree f temps it’s not a concern. Who shoots those settings for that many minutes straight anyway?
@AMALHI15
@AMALHI15 10 ай бұрын
From collecting the opinons from tons of reviews, it seems like overheating is not really much of an issue as stated by the previous reply! Nobody is really gonna be shooting for 10+ straight in one clip unless you're a wedding videographer. So I think you'll be okay! Im debating between the ZV-E1 and the new A7CII now! A7CII is definitely a great hybrid so I'm debating hard right now but zv-e1 is the better video camera and I already have an R6!
@thesahdstudio
@thesahdstudio 10 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! Like the other comments mentioned, it's not really a huge concern. But that completely depends on YOU. Are you going to stream yourself? Are you going to be doing lengthy travel vlogs? Maybe for those conditions its not the best. You could lower the settings to, say 1080p and shoot for hours, then upscale that footage to 4k in your editor. That would look fine and you'd still benefit from shooting 4k in other scenarios. When I really thought about it, they way I use the camera I don't even come close to making it overheat so I haven't thought about it since! WORST case scenario, you buy it new, use it for a month and during that time you will find out if it overheats. If it does, return it! If it doesn't, well you just found the best video camera you can buy for the money!
@thesahdstudio
@thesahdstudio 10 ай бұрын
Don't disagree with this! I think maybe people who want to stream 4k30 might have issues with overheating? Maybe live recording a podcast or something... but in that case you could always scale down to 1080.
@thesahdstudio
@thesahdstudio 10 ай бұрын
I think streaming would be the only thing to really worry about when it comes to overheating for most people... say you're shooting a live podcast, or maybe gaming and you want to use 4k30. Aw I love the ol' R6. Not for video though! It's a difficult decision that hinges on how you use the camera. There's nothing like the zv-e1 for video though. It's awesome for the price!

Good video on choosing the right camera for the job. I shoot still, mostly so I am loving my new a6700. What a great camera, great new sensor straight from the FX-30, great EVF, great flippy screen and it takes exceptional pictures. If I did a lot of videos, the ZV-E1 would be #1 on my list. There have been a few videos comparing stills taken with the ZV-E1 vs something like the A74. Even with large prints, they said the saw very little difference. I also have the A7R3 for those times I want megapixels for serious cropping when taking pictures of wildlife or I simply can't get close to a subject, other than that, the a6700 is just fine. I'm surprised people look at aps-c sensor and assume it is no good. Also, good you called out the zombies who lie about overheating. To help those living in fear, there is a fan out now to cool down the ZV-E1. You are probably well aware of that.

A lot of people play is safe when they buy their first or second camera I think... trying to find that one camera that can do everything. I finally feel like I had enough time using a camera to know what features are truly important. The a6700 looks amazing. I did a recent video talking about how I wasn't going to get one not because it's bad, but because it was the wrong tool for ME. A lot of people disliked that video since they thought I was saying it was a bad camera... oh well! And yes I have seen the fan for the zv-e1, that's really cool. Luckily I haven't needed it yet. For the studio the A7C or A7C II is more than good enough. The only place the ZV-1/FX3/FX60 are going to shine are rolling shutter and at 12,800 base ISO, but between 3200 and 12,800 ISO the A7C II will be cleaner. With Dynamic Active Stabilization on on the ZV-1 you are getting about a 1-to-1 pixel readout, no down-sampling only lens correction. The 1.5x APS-C crop on the A7C II 33MP full frame sensor will yield you 12MP in 16:9 APS-C mode, so the pixels aren't that much larger on the ZV-1 and the rolling shutter on the A7C II/A7 IV is better than the FX30/A6700. This will be less sharp but when filming weddings you will need to come to low light parties, and both will probably work well because a dance party isn't that kind of low light, you get prime lenses with f/1.2, f/1.4, f/1.5, etc. I may get the ZV-E1 and A7C II.

Cool take! I did a video where I compared the zv-e1 to the a7iv for around the house talking head shots / b-roll shots and it was a big difference for me. I'm not doing the most technical testing though and do my best to let my audience know that! But yeah, I agree, the A7C is enough camera for people wanting to build a KZbin channel. Should it be someone's first choice? Maybe not, but if they have it, they can still rock it and it will look good (with the right glass of course).

Thanks for the comparison highlighting the great stabilization on the ZVE1 and the marked difference in the low light video ZVE1 vs A7 iv. I bought the A7 iv a few months ago, and while I love the full frame photos and what I get from my lenses, for the money I wish I had that video stabilization. Seems like to get that I have to drop another $2k on a whole separate camera. Please excuse me for asking an amateur-ish/ hobbyist question, but why not just go with the DJI Action 4 ($400 usd) if good quality 4k+ stabilization is what you are after? Or perhaps the ZVE1 (+$2K), is in a different class of product for what you are trying to do?

@thesahdstudio
@thesahdstudio 10 ай бұрын
So this camera has built in clear image zoom (with a rocker!), which gives you up to 2x zoom without sacrificing quality. That paired with other modes of the camera means you can zoom in a lot while you are shooting. But if you want the Casey Neistat style of walk in and zoom while you are talking, then... yeah, a zoom lens will be what you want. I just am team prime as I LOVE juicy bokeh :) Ok, to answer your question though, people are reminding me that the native Sony lenses work better with the stabilization, so it's hard not to recommend the Sony zooms. But they are very pricey... though you could save money if you buy used. I have the Tamron 17-28mm and it's a great little value zoom lens which, for the price, I do recommend... but I don't have extensive use with the other lenses so I can't give you a recommendation beyond that. The Sony 20mm f1.8 is a gnarly little lens, I'm just saying.

@@pranilchandarkar6595 well you mentioned "casual" filming. The zv-e1 is a bit more of a pro tool in my opinion. The a7cii just seems a bit more versatile. The a6700 is like the little bro to the a7cii... almost as good just worse in low light, especially if you don't really know what you're doing (how to use log etc). @@Nickporter17 hehe, oh it's all good man 👊 you gotta have thick skin to have a KZbin channel! You know, those are just the jokes I like to make. I love Wayne's World... and a lot of my audience does too. Those are the kind of people I want watching my videos because they are like the friends I would have in real life you know? A real friend accepts you the way you are and doesn't try and change you. Cool if you want to keep watching my videos, but my humour and style will always be the same.

You know, I'd say you were joking but I think you are actually right lol. Clearly they could put ALL these features into a reasonable size body. They will once we've bought these all up.

why are you comparing the a7IV? its not the a7c2..

Well, everybody says it's pretty much the exact same performance (same sensor) although the a7cii has slightly updated AF and the new ai chip. Gerald Undone said it was basically the same so... if he says that I believe it!

Appreciate the video. I'm struggling with this exact choice at the moment: do I go with the ZV-E1 or the A7cii. I currently have the 24mp Nikon D600 (from 2012) with some decent Nikon glass (24-70 2.8 and 50mm 1.8). Over the past couple of years I've really started getting into cinematography but have been limited to my iPhone 13 Pro, Insta360 One RS, a DJI Mini 4, and Hohem MT2 gimbal for shooting 4K video. I take a lot of pictures and video at the race track with my daughter and the D600 has served me reasonably well there for pictures but I'm primarily limited to the iPhone for trackside video (One RS is for onboard shots). We're joining a new team this year and I'd like to shoot some content for them, including some interviews and race footage. Enter my dilemma: the ZV-E1 can shoot 120fps with only a 1.1x crop, the A7cii is 1.5x and limited to 60fps. ZV-E1 has virtually no rolling shutter; A7cii looks like jello. ZV-E1 can take OK pics but flash sync speed sucks and using APS-C lenses requires clear-image zoom - the A7cii downsamples its 4K (it's potentially sharper) and the 33mp allows for way more options in post and works great with APS-C lenses since you still get true 4K cropped in...but there is way more potential for rolling shutter. Both cameras are great in low-light and in one review it looked like the A7cii was retained more details up to ISO 12800, then the ZV-E1 started to look better. So that's my conundrum: do I get the A7cii for great photos + better flash sync speed + strong video capabilities (especially for simple walking/cinematic shots + interviews) and sell my Nikon D600+glass? Or do I get the ZV-E1 so I can get 120fps, better extreme low-light, and very little rolling shutter and keep my D600 for photos? I'm sort of leaning towards the A7cii but I'm worried I'll miss the 120fps/lack of rolling shutter of the ZV-E1... Aaaaaaaaaah. Decision, decisions.

It sounds to me like the Hybrid would be better for you. 2 cameras would be a pain! Since you plan on using aps-c glass, have you considered getting the a6700? It's cheaper than the a7cii and probably has similar quality if you're shooting mostly outdoors. Just a thought. I think you could use software to get slow motion effects (Topaz) and honestly, in my experience the Zv-e1 rolling shutter is bad, so I wouldn't base your decision on that. I know... it's a tough call. Honestly they are all great options. Sony cameras are just fantastic and you'll be happy with whatever you get... you just have to make sure you don't second guess that decision lol

@@thesahdstudio thanks for the feedback. The A6700 probably won't suit my needs as I'd like a full frame for better low light. So the ZV-E1 has bad rolling shutter? I thought it was supposed to be pretty good versus something like the A7cii. I thought about Topaz Video for additional slow mo if I went with the A7cii. Such a tough call. 😆

Yeah I'm team full-frame for sure. You mentioned smaller lenses so I figured I'd throw it in the mix. And yeah it absolutely has bad rolling shutter... to be honest I don't have a ton of experience when it comes to panning and using the camera that way since I mostly do talking head stuff and slow b-roll shots. I mean maybe it's worse on other cameras but I would not say it's good on the zv-e1. But perhaps there's modes better than others or settings to tweak it. If I get time tomorrow I'll see if I can test it out more for you. @@Digitalfiendscom

What is Sony's product refresh cycle like? Will we see a new ZV-E1 ii or something this year (like the new ZV-E10 ii)? Will Sony add 120fps to the A7cii (even if cropped)?

Honestly I don't know... it's quite new so I can't see them updating it for a couple years. As far as for them adding features to the a7cii I'm not sure on that either. Sorry, I know this isn't helping your decision lol
