I Bought TWO Tokyo Drift Arcade Games For The Price Of ONE *Building The Shop Arcade*

The shop build continues! After we get the balcony stood up and start building out the Motul lounge, an arcade will go upstairs beside the couches. I bought a Sega Super Hang On in December and today one of the other must-have machines popped up for sale way cheaper than they ever go for. I messaged the seller immediately and told him I'd be right over to pick up TWO Fast and the Furious Tokyo Drift sit down arcades. Now I only need Time Crisis 4 and a pinball to complete the arcade. This place is going to be absolutely insane!

Please DON'T LCD swap that Super Hang On! I fix arcade machines as a hobby and in my opinion there's nothing worse than an LCD swap on old games. On "recent" (enough) games like Tokyo Drift, I understand it, the game's video is coming out of a PC anyway (those Optiplexes were in a ton of Raw Thrills games of that period)... But on older games? No no no! I can't count how many old Dance Dance Revolution machines I've seen that were unplayable because of an LCD swap... (timing issues) On something as old as Hang On it will not look right. If I wasn't an ocean away from you I'd take a look at that Hang On :) You got an awesome deal on it! I'm sure you can find someone to fix the CRT in it (if that's its problem)... Also dont throw the Tokyo Drift CRT, arcade collectors will buy it from you.

To add to this Use Acronis or something and clone those tokyo drift drives, better safe than sorry. You know tech, you know how old those drives are and they probably have a ton of powered on hours on them already

@@DongleSama I could be wrong but it looked like there was a back-up disk taped to the bottom at 4:37 - still a good idea to do a clone though. Something will inevitably go wrong, just hopefully not for a long while..
@docgiggles130
@docgiggles130 3 жыл бұрын
@@DongleSama That was the recovery disk taped in the bottom of the game. They knew the Hard Drive will fail so they made it easy to reinstall. When the dive fails, you replace it, put the disk in the DVD drive and it takes care of everything else. It's not worth the hassle to clone the drive when you have the recover DVD.
@docgiggles130

As a 25+ year arcade tech, I will tell you that you will need to carefully remove the computers and make sure the CPU heatsinks are free of dust. They will lock up if they get too hot and I have yet to see one that wasn't so full of dust that the fins were totally blocked. DO NOT LOSE OR DAMAGE THE PARALLEL PORT DONGLE! (should have FF on a green sticker.) That is the security key and the game will not run without it. While you are in the computer, make sure the computer boards are in good shape. Dells of that era had a problem with bad capacitors. It would be a good idea to find a couple spare computer motherboards for the Dell 740 before they all vanish. The game code was written for that computer so it's not a simple or easy thing to try and use a different model of computer. The Hard Drive will fail at some point, but the recovery DVD is inside the back. The HDD is just a SATA drive, so you just need a new one of the same or bigger size. If you change the hard drive out for an SSD, do both machines at the same time. A SSD will load faster and can mess up the link timing if only one has a SSD. You will find the volume controls and test switch in the top coin door. When you pull the CRTs, do not throw them away. Arcade collectors want them. Collectors hate LCDs. An LCD lowers the collector value of an arcade game. A CRT with as nice of a picture I saw in this will pull in $100-200, maybe more. When you pull the CRT, do yourself a favor and leave the class CRT in the metal frame. It is much easier and safer to take it out with the frame (you wont have to try and remove the flyback wire that has a 10,000-20,000 volt charge in it even when there is no power.) You remove the monitor from the front of the game. Oh yeah, the lock you don't have a key for, just get a screw driver and pry under the security bar. The lock cam is a soft metal that will bend back as you pry the door open. You can also just drill the lock out with a 3/8" or bigger drill bit. Just go right down the middle of the tumblers. You will NOT be able to get into the cash box from the top or back. You have to go in through the door itself. That was done to make it hard to get to the money.

You need to get a deluxe outrun for your collection. The one that moves! Those games weigh about 400lbs each. Sadly I have moved hundreds of them in my day as I used to own and operate an arcade. What pinball machine are you wanting? I know a guy with a few for sale. Shipping on them isn't that bad. That version of the Super Hang On is pretty rare. As far as the coin door lock just drill it straight through and you will not damage anything. As far as the screen goes just take the chassis off of the monitor after its discharged and pay your local tv repair guy to recap it if you don't want to do it yourself. Cap kit is like $12. It is probably a Wells Gardner monitor in it. Im guessing a 4600 or 4700. Might possibly even be a GO7. Pretty common stuff.

I'm pretty sure that the Hang On arcade machine uses a low resolution 15KHz arcade monitor. I don't think it's going to be easy to LCD swap. As long as the tube isn't broken, you can probably rebuild the CRT. They're not that complicated. There's places online that sell cap kits and replacement parts (flyback, etc...). The hardest part will be figuring out exactly which monitor model is in it.

I finally broke down and got a Pi 4 after seeing that they finally made a version of RetroPie that's optimized for it and what a difference! It does still struggle somewhat on N64 games but that's an issue with the emulator and since the Pi 4 is still new I'm sure they will have it working great soon. I do suggest getting a variety of controllers for each console type though because no matter what you do an Xbox controller sometimes has a hiccup with side scrolling NES and SNES games and playing Atari 2600 games without the classic Atari joystick just doesn't feel the same.

Awesome man. If you ever need help with repair or technical assistance on these games, let me know. I have spare monitors, parts, and pretty much anything else you'd need. If you are going to LCD the second Drift machine, I'll gladly take the CRT off your hands. And I wouldn't LCD swap the Hang-On. I can repair the monitor, rejuvenate it, and make it brand new again, or I've got 15 other rebuilt and bulletproofed ones that I can swap in there for you. Been working on and repairing monitors and machines for 16 years. Your call of course, just letting you know. I think you'd regret LCD'ing it because of the angle and the curved shell. You'll have a massive gap on each side unless you fab closeouts of some kind, and you'd need a 100% viewing angle LCD based on the angle it sits at. I'm betting your power supply in the Hang-On is bad because you should hear the game running at a minimum even with the monitor not working. Any help you want or need, let me know.

I was surprised to find out while back that a lot of arcade games during a certain period were just windows PC .exe files (not to be confused with ROMS.) I guess the arcade industry just needed a short cut at some point to lower costs rather than building brand new hardware.

PCs had gotten to the point that they had as much power as the arcade boards. There was no reason to build their own boards anymore when someone else can do the hard work and make them cheaper. This creates a new problem for these games because the software is written for the computer they used and it's very difficult to use a new computer. I have spare computer motherboards for all the computer based arcade games I have just so I know I'll be able to fix them in the future.

Should do a col-lab with Lockpicking Lawyer on the Super Hang on, he’d probably be inside it faster than it took you to cut the padlock off. “On today’s watchJRgo, we have a nice click out of one and two... is binding!” *cue the intro music*

I could have it open with 2 screw drivers in under 10 seconds. I got good at it because my employees kept breaking the keys.

I just love that music during the unloading...it's like background music from every 80's teen movie! What is it? Subscription or royalty free?

I love to see the restoration of the games, considering the last 20 videos were about a warehouse lol, we just like seeing things get fixed.

JR will set a brand-new standard for mechanic shops with these arcade machines! If more mechanic shops had these, it would save the kids from being bored while they wait with their parents to get their cars back! 😂

JR just use the master key to break open into the hang on, a flat head screw driver will work!

JR, don’t scrap the CRT’s. A lot of people who restore arcade machines still use them.

I'm worried you're spending on toys rather than concentrating on the car garage aspect to do interesting projects. If anything with the Dell Optiplex computers in those arcade machines, find out if you need to make backup copies of the hard drives. You don't want them to fail. You could probably image them to large enough flash drives.

For the pinball machine: get White Water (Williams, 1993). It's the best.
