In the mid 90’s, Anheuser Bush held a Dayton USA arcade machine tournament with linked up sit down cabinets in the St Louis, MO area and competitions were held at local bars across the St Louis Metropolitan area. Initially there were no age restrictions to join so at 13, I convinced my father to rent me a Sega Saturn from my local Blockbuster and rented Daytona USA for a week to master each stage. After winning 1st place across 3 separate bars they later changed the rules and required competitors to be 21 or older to compete. Having a little kid today smack talk you across online play is one thing, but having one beating adults so badly they had to change the rules was oh so satisfying 😂

I had a similar story. In the early 2000s, I was wandering around Jillians (a local knockoff of Dave & Busters) and noticed a Hydro Thunder 4 seater with 30 credits loaded on one of the cabinets and nobody sitting there. I naturally gravitated over to it and started playing. That is when I noticed a guy in another seat was playing and he was playing flawlessly. He was beating everybody without too much effort. I proceeded to challenge him to the next 10 matches and ended up beating him in 3 of them. I discovered what type of boat he was using which seemed to do well on long straightaways, so I challenged him on short track races where he had to turn more often. It worked. His boat of choice wasn't built for short track whereas mine was. After the matches, I stepped away to stretch for a bit and he approached me saying that I was the first person to ever beat him and that he was the city champ on that game! We ended up playing more matches and I beat him two more times... once again on short track.

If this in fact, I'd imagine that the rule change to 21 years of age was not happenstance a more to do with optics for marketing. They likely did not want to see nor be seen showcasing a child who is under age of drinking alcohol as being a winner at an event that they were sponsoring. That would have been akin to Camel cigarettes having photos with their logo included alongside a child contestant. Bad Optics being the first and most likely tantamount as well as highly likely the companies wanted to join their target market and not have them frustrated by your performance trouncing that of their of age clients

Ralph your channel continues to deliver, and this video ROCKS dude! I too, am a huge arcade racing fan and at 49yrs old, grew up in the 80's playing the likes of Pole Position and OutRun. However, my TRUE love belongs to the arcade racers from the 90's a few from the 2000's, As a result, here's my personal top 10 list of arcade racers.... 1)Outrun 2 2)Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 6 3)Scud Race 4)Initial D Arcade Stage 8 5)Rave Racer 6)F-Zero AX 7)Daytona 2 8)Daytona USA 9)Sega Rally Championship 10)OutRun This order might change in the future, but as of right now, after spending years playing those games, I feel comfortable putting those arcade racers as my personal top 10. Regardless, theyyre all fantastic and you can't go wrong with any of them :) Anyway keep up the great work brother, and long live retro gaming!!

It's got the fans, amazing sound package, and the wildest motion seat I've ever seen. One of the of the most fun experiences I've ever had with an arcade racer - we're lucky to have a linked pair of them on the boardwalk here in Wildwood, NJ.

With all of the racing games Sega released you could easily make a top 20 list. I would add the original Outrun, Super Monaco GP, Rad Mobile, Outrunners, Sega Rally Championship, F355 Ferrari Challenge and Power Drift. Others worth mentioning: Namco's Ridge Racer, Atari's Hard Drivin'/ Race Drivin', and the Star Wars Episode One Pod Racer game.

I don’t argue about lists because they’re subjective . So many factors go into selecting one’s favorite games (or really anything)…a lot of it has to do with our ages…just a few years can make a huge difference. I was 16 years old when Pole Position was released…by today’s standards it’s archaic, but when released it was a literal game changer. I don’t have a super large arcade collection but there is a Pole Position cockpit right in the middle….huge sentimental value attached to it. I could never have a list of driving games where PP wasn’t at the top.

Has 65 games on it currently, with another 150 that need setup and configured. I must thank you, one of my top 3 games on it is Outrun 2SP. I saw you play it on a live stream, and I loved Outrun back in the day, and this new version is amazing. It is the game I show people first. I LOVE RoadBlasters, but sadly I cannot get the wheel to steer correctly in MAME. I have adjusted settings for hours, and it is still barely controllable. RoadBlasters plays better on my other cab with a GRS spinner, which is fun, but just wrong. I plan to build a cab with the GRS Yoke, and I hope then RoadBlasters will control better.

One of the remaining local arcades, as bare as they now are with classics(they're not a redemption arcade or a barcade though, thankfully), PROUDLY maintains a Super Hang On. They also have another two-seat sit-down racer with the seats beat up, ripped up, paint peeling off the cab, but it was being maintained in a state that indicates they were letting it be that way on purpose just to underline how old the game was. I can't recall what game it was, but graphically it was something I THINK from around the turn of the 90s - definitely MUCH older than Daytona USA, but much newer than Pole Position. The arcade is closed for the season and no photos exist on their web page, so I can't just go look, but if anyone wants to have the challenge of helping me recall(I'll know it on sight if I see a photo), it's a two-player side-by-side sit-down colored with ALL THE YELLOW. The seats were padded with fabric covering, as well, and if that wasn't as they came originally the arcade owner did a great job making it look original. Fun fact: Last time I was at this arcade, a 70+ year old Amish guy and his wife were playing Cruis'n Blast.

It's humorous in retrospect when I think how much crap the Daytona USA music got when it came out. People loved the game but oh my, the music got a lot of criticism. Everyone compared it to Ridge Racer and almost everyone preferred the music in that game. I myself loved the music in Daytona USA, so much so that I bought the game for the Sega Saturn before I had the actual console when I found out the music was available to listen to, on the disc itself. And now, after all this time, I can still hear the music from Daytona USA on everything from videos like this to the artist himself doing unique covers of the songs. He even made a Daytona-like song for one of the Ridge Racer games when the Daytona car was featured in that game. The Ridge Racer music, however, seems to have been forgotten... Oh, by the way... just realized you didn't have a single Ridge Racer game in your top 10 list!

I would have dropped Arctic Thunder and put San Fran Rush on the list

Oh man, you're so right, I went back and forth man. I had Rush,Pole position, Sega Rally, Mario Kart Arcade and several others... and kept swapping the list. I need to do a follow-up of the entire list. I should have just made it a top 20... LOL.

I remember waiting in line at Disney Quest in Orlando to race their Daytona setup. I believe it was the 8 player setup and would feature whoever was first on the tv. Great video as always Ralph! When is your next con?

Man, that must have been EPIC! I'm going to be at Pinball Expo in Chicago next week. After that, I don't have anymore planned till 2023. Thanks so much for watching bud!

Great video ^^ Daytona was truly an experience and still rocks today. If you have the possibility give the Switch version of Virtua Racing a try, it’s really a joy.

Got to play that new Cruis'n game this week in an arcade while on holiday. Crazy fast, super sensitive controls, real learning curve but a lot of fun. Not quite as good as you Ralph , I only got second. Wanted to show ya the proof but can't upload any pics lol.
