Very small history lesson about the Neo-Geo CD : the Neo-Geo AES had Arcade-perfect port of games because it literally WAS an Arcade board, it was simply a consolized verison of the Neo-Geo MVS, which was used in actual arcades. Because of that, it cost a fortune, and the games were literally a whole arcade board, they were like $200 each, which wasn't a problem for an arcade, but was stupidly expensive in the early 90s. Since CDs were so much cheaper at the time, they simply replaced the "carts" (again, actual arcade boards) with a CD-ROM drive. Problem is, they cheaped out and chose a 1x CD drive, which were CRAZY slow, and not enough RAM into the console to compensate. It meant games had to load CONSTANTLY, and the load times were stupid, close to a minute, which was crazy for the Neo-Geo, which mainly had fighting games (imagine having to wait almost 2 minutes between matches because it had to load the character list after booting for 2 or 3 minutes, load the stage select screen, load the actual stage, load the round, load the second round and reload the character list after). Later, they released the CDZ, which had a 2x CD-ROM drive, making it finally bearable, but nobody really cared in 1996, when the Saturn and PS1 were already there (for informations, the PS1 had a 2x drive from the start, an easier-to-use RAM configuration, and dedicated VRAM, and the Saturn was essentially the same on that aspect)

Neo Geos weren't "very very unpopular" because of the games, though. The games were the exact same amazing games that Neo Geo arcade cabs played. They were only "unpopular" because they were ridiculously expensive (the cartridges were like 2-300 USD, and that's in 1990s money), or had outrageous load times (the CD version), and the hardware was expensive for both. The original home console was almost 700 dollars, and the CD version was a small run and still was 400 dollars. And again, that's in 90s dollars.

The radio; Typical Sony issue from that era. The reason the cassette doesn't keep playing is stiff grease. The little hook that is supposed to hook the play button is not engaging. The headstack also probably doesn't move freely causing the thing to sound super muddy (it's supposed to sound just as good with a properly recorded tape as it does with the radio). Honestly a pretty easy fix. It's well built. 300 is way too much though, there's equally cool radios out there for 1/3rd of the price.

One day I was with my grandpa, who was a huge video geek too (Betamax baby!), and we stopped by Burt's store. This guy had a Neo Geo AES *and* MVS on display for sale that you could play. I can not begin to express how my 13yo mind was able to comprehend playing it. I'm not going to buy a console to just sit it on a shelf and gamble on it going up or down in value, if I enjoy that console, and it is portable, I am going to take that thing EVERYWHERE with me. The scratches and scrapes actually add value for me in a weird way, because I know that the last person loved it so much they played it constantly. Besides, nothing a careful coat of paint and some finish can't fix. You can match it with the old stuff, you just need to know what you're doing and not rush it. I've done this with varying degrees of success myself. ;)
